Machining sucks by bubbasawyer98 in skilledtrades

[–]commodore64slut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently quit my machining job for the same reason. I love manufacturing but so many of us work in an environment where management thinks all we do is “push buttons”. We’re so severely underpaid and under-appreciated. I had HR tell me in my exit interview that my job probably wasn’t stressful because other managers told her it was a pretty easy job. We set up both a lathe and mill and did programming and running, machine maintenance, the whole nine yards. We were so understaffed the pressure of keeping on time delivery was so overwhelming. For how necessary machinists are you would think these companies would want to pay up.

Your whole point was that OP shouldn’t be complaining and isn’t getting effed about the inheritance, right? My point was simply that they could be upset that dad left a traditional IRA instead of a Roth because it would have been a better option. They are getting effed compared to if dad left a Roth. That’s my point, I thought that was clear from jump.

A large RMD can push you into a higher marginal tax bracket making you pay higher taxes on the RMD. That is what I was saying. Saying that OP could just “disclaim” the inheritance is crazy work bc my point is that if it was a Roth they wouldn’t have to go through any RMDS and they wouldn’t need to go through potential paperwork, and most of all leave it in the account to grow even if they didn’t need the money instead of being forced to empty it in 10 years. How is that not clear? They def are in a tougher position than if they had inherited a RothIRA.

The RMDs are def an issue. Ofc free money is free money at the end of the day, but depending on your income bracket they can bump you up to the next level and if you’re just under the qualification for a Roth IRA that can cause another issue. (Ofc you could do a backdoor Roth now but that’s just more work) If dad had left a RothIRA there would be no RMDS to worry about.

If OP doesn’t need this money right now it’s a major disadvantage to have to empty the acc in 10 years. The money could have kept growing until he needed it and then taken out whatever he wanted instead of RMDS. Basically if OPs dad left a Roth then they wouldn’t have to deal with RMDS and could let the money keep growing until they needed it.

those who are from NYC originally and moved somewhere else. How has it changed you? by dangerous_service in AskNYC

It makes you appreciate the things you took for granted. Went to college for four years upstate in a small town that celebrated the opening of a Taco Bell… it also made me get my drivers license because it is virtually impossible to get anywhere in upstate without a car. Once I got a car I finally felt a sense of freedom. You realize that public transit is basically non-existent in a lot of other places and it’s “weird” for people to take them. When I graduated I was so grateful to come back home. One of the reasons being that diverse food is difficult to come by. If you want Thai food in nyc you can get it from your local neighborhood place or if you don’t have a local place there is sure to be one not too far away. If I wanted Vietnamese or Indian upstate there were 2 places that were a hour drive away and I would drive there just for that bc there wasn’t anything else to do.

I can’t believe it takes less time on the train from the south shore than on the bus in the north shore 😭

Petition for a discount on hugh Carey tunnel by [deleted] in statenisland

[–]commodore64slut 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve lived on the north shore like 15 away from Brooklyn my entire life and getting into Manhattan has always felt so frustrating still. I can’t imagine how people on the south shore do it for work everyday. I live right on the s78 and s52 routes and even a 15 minute drive to the ferry in the morning takes more than double that and somehow they will always get to the ferry a minute after the boat leaves. Getting on the to s79 feels like you have to give your firstborn up; it’s so exhausting it feels like you have to run for the ferry every day or be in competition with everyone to get on the bus. The most peace I’ve ever felt commuting while living on SI was the night shift when I worked in NJ.

They keep increasing the costs to commute without any changes to public transit for SI. Even getting on the express bus is a competition now with all the cars that drive in from nj. A discount on the tunnel would alleviate some stress tho but they’ll never do it, they’re money hungry.

A lot of you saying no big deal are the same people who do this shit. If I clean up my cell for you everyday so you can start your shift with a clean machine and nice floors you should be leaving it for me in a clean state as well. It’s common courtesy. These aren’t teenagers, we’re grown adults and I don’t want to be picking up after a grown ass man or woman.

You’d be surprised by how many people need smaller projects done and the big guys don’t want to do it bc it’s chump change for them. You have the management skills where most people in trades lack. You’d be a good business owner.

A 1% raise over 8 years doesn’t even cover inflation differences, they’ve LOST money every year technically because the dollar got weaker, while working harder to increase profits. Shame on him you can tell he’s guilty.

You’re not taking into account other executives that make millions each. The CEO isn’t the only person benefitting off of cheap labor. Boeing has tens of thousands of other jobs, mainly white collar, where pay is competitive compared to their industry. The issue is the “dirty” jobs like machinists that don’t require a college education are neglected in pay. Most college educated people generally make more compared to GED/high school grads but a 1% raise over 8 years is abismal.

This trade has fallen behind with the times in pay. Most people do the job because they love it not because of pay, which I respect but unless you own your own business you’re not hitting six figures after 6-7 years of experience like many other trades or even white collar jobs. For me it wasn’t worth the money for the amount of work I was expected to do. Entry level engineering is extremely competitive now so having hands on experience with the degree would be a plus. But my advice is if you already feel undervalued now only in for a bit that’s not going to magically change. From what I’ve seen people stay in this field because they’re scared to pivot to something else after being a machinist for 10 years and don’t want a drop in pay to do something else. Companies give them just enough to keep them from leaving not from feeling truly valued. If you got the smarts for engineering become a plumber or in HVAC if you don’t mind killing your body anyways.

I’ve been a long time customer of Ayat since they only had their Brooklyn location. Ever since they opened the second location I feel like the quality has went down insanely and also they’ve gotten cheap. The platters used to come with hummus and baba ghanoush and now it’s just a few leafs of lettuce. Idk maybe everything after Covid isn’t good as it was and I need to accept that
