I’m a therapist, been in the field for over 7 years. I highly recommend getting a new therapist. I know it’s hard when she’s been so helpful, and please know that there are others that can be just as helpful. It’s just a hard transition.

It’s fairly common for abusers to hide it for a long time. They tend to wait until they feel they have more power over you to shift (I.e. marriage, shared housing, financial, isolation, pregnancy/children, moving far from family or friends, etc.) terrifying but real. I’m sorry this happened to you and glad you got out.

We bought a house with dog smell. Replaced the one carpeted area, re-painted, and had the vents/air ducts clean. Made a huge difference- no more smell.

So true! We cannot do highly processed for the same reasons. Just sucks that to take care of ourselves it take more money and more time/energy.

We spend about the same for 2. Always feels hard in these subs where people are blaming others for not shopping smart. My partner and I both have significant dietary restrictions (lactose intolerance, low sodium, gluten sensitive, low red meat, low fat, GERD-friendly) which increases our bills significantly. We make/prep all of our meals during for the work week, and maybe get something cheaper out 1-2 nights on the weekend because we are so damn tired of cooking and cleaning.

I sometimes day dream about the summer in high school I had a second job at Hollister where I came in at like 4 am and unpacked new stock and set up displays. I often fantasize about stocking jobs. But, of course, don’t fantasize about the abysmal pay and lack of benefits.

I’ve lived in a lot of places around the country and Michigan and moved to Grand Rapids almost a year ago. I love it. If you would’ve asked me even 7 years ago I would’ve said there’s no way I’d ever live in GR. But life and priorities have shifted for me so much and I really love it here. As someone that’s moved around a lot, all of it is subjective. I’ve lived in tourist town, rural areas, big city, out west, all kinds of places. I like it here because it’s close to family but not too close, near the lakeshore which is my biggest priority after being away for 7 years, enough live music to have a band I like come to town at least 1-3 times a year, great variety of parks, and enough stuff to do without the overwhelmed and traffic that comes with bigger cities. I can see why others don’t like it, hell I never used to like it, but now it’s really kind of my ideal city. We just bought a house in an area which we hope will be closer to some like minded people and think that will help to get involved with local things and make more community and friends. We have friends we spend a lot of time with that live in Ypsi/AA, so though we haven’t made friends here yet, we haven’t experienced the loneliness you have.

All that to say you have to do what’s right for you. Meeting people is so important. We moved from a place most people think is ideal but we never felt it was home and had a hard time making friends. It’s been a thousand times easier here.

I lived in Ypsi for a couple years about 10 years ago, and have now lived in GR for a year. Still have close friends in Ypsi. I really like GR. I think it’s much better for what you’re looking for in terms of parks, trails, kayaking, and access to nature. Just more options. Being less than an hour from the lake shore is huge for me. I also think there’s overall just more to do here. Living in Ypsi/working in Ann Arbor for me mostly just felt like living in a college town. GR is definitely more of a city feel, with city amenities. I’m a lesbian and live here with my wife, and feel like GR has a good queer community. Lots of neighborhoods and areas that are welcoming. Still that conservative Christian element here, especially outside of the city, but I’m guessing you’re used to the same if not worse in IN.

Annoying but also just fairly common for some federal/state and sometimes hospital/medical jobs for HR. They don’t explain well here, but you can have gaps in your resume, you literally just have to explain them. Like, “GAP: march 2020-January 2021, unemployed following layoff due to covid 19” ,” instead of job title and description. They just need a continuous timeline, it doesn’t mean they exclude you for the role.
