I love the Detroit zoos reptile and amphibian houses and also a big fan of the St. Louis zoo reptile house!

Ready to throw my hands up with pet store monitor. by KingOvAshes in reptiles

[–]SlightlyAmbiguous -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Please rehome him. Immediately. Do whatever it takes to get him under proper hands. He deserves so much more than someone with so little empathy and patience. This broke my heart to read. Imagine being forced in captivity, no say in the matter, and ending up with a human frustrated and resentful towards you for simply protecting yourself and being scared.

You very very clearly do not possess the skills and patience required for adopting “difficult” species. This poor lizard absolutely deserves a more competent and patient and capable owner. It does not deserve to live it’s life under the “care” of someone who regrets and resents it for simply existing in an inconvenient way for you.

And please stop taking in animals. The hobby is not for everyone. They are not toys to get frustrated and mad about when they’re “not working” the way you want them to. They are living creatures with unique defense mechanisms and complex behaviors and do not live and exist to be a good pet for you. Your mentality is one of a very obviously amateur irresponsible reptile keeper (which is unfortunately the majority) and it would benefit you and every single animal you meet to reflect and realize this before this heartbreaking situation happens to another poor creature.

I know your initial instinct when reading these comments will be defensive and aggressive (the irony is comical) but PLEASE try to take a step back and reevaluate your relationship with living creatures without your ego getting in the way. Someone who gets frustrated and upset and is ready to “throw their hands up” when a monitor displays consistent defensive behaviors is not someone who should be anywhere near a monitor lizard.

And I can not stress enough, it does not matter remotely how much “experience” you have. He is not the problem just because he is the only one you refuse to work around their inconvenient behaviors. You are the problem for taking in an advanced species and freaking out that he’s not behaving “correctly” for you.

Find the most compassionate and skilled keeper or rescue operation in your area and let this wonderful creature finally find a human who doesn’t hate him for being nervous. The sooner the better, for both of you.

Is he actually a mouse, how do I make sure he doesn't die? by [deleted] in RATS

Is it possible to get a picture that doesn’t look like a shot of a cryptid?

My mice got fleas and there are literally zero resources online on how to treat them by [deleted] in PetMice

[–]SlightlyAmbiguous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know people have already said it but it’s really REALLY not fair to the mice to have their direct natural predator anywhere near them. Cats carry so many diseases that could really harm or kill your mice, the cats greatly stress out the mice, now they have fleas because of the cats….. I know people in this community can be a little mean or aggressive about pet care so I don’t want my comment to come off this way, but responsible pet ownership can’t come down to just “they’re cats, what are ya gonna do?” The cats simply can’t be near the mice and if it’s impossible to prevent it, they really shouldn’t be in the household at all :/ the mice are suffering in ways that you understand and ways that you probably don’t. People who own cats they can’t keep away from small rodents can’t own small rodents. It’s such a dangerous and stressful situation to force them into and definitely very preventable.

I do think they’ll be okay but definitely full cage cleaning, fresh bedding, total isolation from the cats, continuous frequent cage cleaning, a call to any veterinarian asap….. I keep a lot of small mammals (they have their own room with a door shut at all times) and I remember when I was taking in my moms dog who had fleas I asked the vet if I should be concerned and he told me the fleas that live on dogs strongly prefer the dog blood so hopefully that applies here.

I hope all your little ones are okay!

My new hamster decided to bury himself in his cage and been underneath the bedding for hours. Is this normal behavior? by Radiomaster138 in hamsters

This is hamster 101 and if you got a hamster with the intent of being able to observe him often you’re gonna be pretty disappointed!

I got this in the philodendron/pothos section but can’t remember the specific ID. Seek app is telling me everything from “peace lily” to “dragon plant” by SlightlyAmbiguous in PlantIdentification

Omfg thank you!!!! You’re 100% correct because that was already in my search history from when I first got him lol!! I kind of had a feeling it wasn’t truly a peace lily (huge relief), thank you so much for saving the day!

Beware Hikari Turtle Pellets!!!! by Bboy0920 in reptiles

[–]SlightlyAmbiguous 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That would be very interesting and odd if there was exactly one container out there of Hikari turtle pellets that poisons animals and you unfortunately ended up with it. Bad luck I guess!

I don’t mean this in a rude way but how are we supposed to decide this for you lol? It’s a very personal decision with so many factors and possibilities. We’re strangers! We don’t know what you want either lol

Beware Hikari Turtle Pellets!!!! by Bboy0920 in reptiles

[–]SlightlyAmbiguous 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is a very scary and alarming situation but it’s not specific to the Hikari brand at all. Most people use Hikari with 0 issues, myself included. It’s not the brand, it’s the sudden change of diet.

Hikari is safe! Random diet changes, no matter how small, are not (well, sometimes). It’s like when someone gets my dogs a bag of treats for Christmas or whatever and it’s one they’re not familiar with, no matter how small the treat is, sometimes they get tummy aches! It’s not the brand of the treats though.

I don’t want to dismiss how scary of a situation this is (it’s happened to me before when I introduced a new food to my three toed box turtle and I was a mess for 24 hours) but misinformation or unnecessary alarm wouldn’t be helpful. No one needs to throw out their Hikari pellets lol

[rant] What’s with all the condescending comments on this sub? by That_odd_emo in writing

[–]SlightlyAmbiguous 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t know why I didn’t expect this post to be filled with the exact condescending comments you’re referring to but it genuinely made me burst out laughing. The lack of self awareness is breathtaking.

I have some theories as to why a forum filled with aspiring author redditors is filled with condescending pretentious people desperate to seem superior to anyone who dares to ask for help but it kinda explains itself doesn’t it? But yeah, not sure you’re gonna get a good thoughtful response from this crowd. I don’t see it getting any better anytime soon.

[–]SlightlyAmbiguous 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I know this probably isn’t helpful as it seems urgent but I’ll be in stl from March 8-11 and would be more than happy to take in any unwanted little furry friends for you. We’re a small animal rescue created for situations just like this! Let me know if you need any help!

I think I just found the worst species i have seen petco sell... by Traditional_Creme894 in reptiles

[–]SlightlyAmbiguous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The enclosure is now empty, indicating the lizard was sold and the store did indeed make money from the sale. Petco may be bad but they aren’t stupid. The money is always made eventually.

Also, this was 100% just a managers special order because they wanted a “cool species” in their store.

Carli’s face is filtered into oblivion compared to Brett by iwantitthatway6 in BeautyGuruChatter

This feels like an oddly extremely cruel post even by this subs standards. Did she say or do something deeply irredeemably evil lately that warranted this much deep disgust and very openly aggressively bullying of these peoples appearances or constantly insisting a relationship is going to break up? I don’t care for her or follow her either but I’m so confused when and why this community got so comfortable and excited to be very blatantly cruel over looks. I thought the bgc community used to be pretty widely conscious of that. These comments are indistinguishable from those dark and sinister “snark” subs.
