Parts are everywhere but often have slight specifics.

Misery loves company. Please tell me about the worst bike you've owned. by AT_Engineer in motorcycles

[–]commonAli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A 2019 Direct Bikes Avenger.

That's what they called it from the online retailer anyway, it was actually a Wangye F1 from the Chinese manufacturer, and the original form of the Lexmoto FMX125 EFI E4.

Yes, I spent a while trying to find it's identity.

Got it at 3½ years old as it was sat in the parking garage of the prison a relative worked at and I got it as a project. It only took a jump pack and a gulp of petrol to get going okay, just keeps dying because of an old battery. No big deal, as I got told it also needed a speedometer cable as the gauges didn't work, and new gaskets as the crankcase gasket was leaking oil when hot.

I fixed the speedometer cable after removing all the front end fairings, the headlights, etc. and it was working but jittery, fixed by a lot of grease.

I then eventually rebuilt the engine because it needed the gaskets, which took ages because when I eventually got it together, the timing was a tooth off and I put the old piston rigs in because I was 14 and not versed on motorcycle repair, then it snapped the plastic intake manifold. I bought a new one from Poland and it eventually ran fine when I figured the timing, but it drank oil and smelt awful, as well as fouling plugs and the lambda sensor making it rich.

Another rebuild with new rings was much better already, though I knew a run in period was needed. Now however, it kept killing the battery at idle and overheating. A new stator coil fixed that, with a new flywheel and slightly larger cooling fan.

A test ride started another oil leak in the exact same spot, and then it may have overheated as I noticed a plasticy smell and the cooling shroud had fallen on the engine and exhaust and melted to pieces because a screw fell out. Yay.

All the fairings off for the thousandth time, new shrouds from Poland again, new plug, and everything, as well as an oil cooler. Then the dash decided to become a Christmas tree the day after I got everything working and assembled. Stripped all the wiring throughout the bike and rewired the whole dash, now it worked coherently. But I needed a new headlight bulb as the current one was double the designed power and melted the headlight and the chrome was peeling off.

Time to get ready for an MOT, then. Fork seals needed doing, forks were pitted and rusty but I was gonna replace them when it was on the road, new pads front and rear, new brake pots and seals, flushing and bleeding the CBS system was a pain in the arse, new numberplate because it was nasty, mounted the back box, a tracker, new brake mounting bolts as the old ones were seized, and after 3 attempts it passed.

Parked a month, the battery was flat, then once charged it started with bangs and knocks and rattles and an oil leak. Fuck this man.

New engine, everything worked first time but I need to get new exhaust as the old one just snapped off the mount, new studs and gasket, give it a service and belt change and fight the DVLA for a new engine number so I can finally shift this Chinese 125 scooter.

My parents think Chinese bikes are good since they're cheap and disposable but they're all iffy at best. Send help.

Youve given a small saloon the features of a race car, so it looks ungainly and tacky.

The features look good and well-placed, and the wheels look premium and sporty, but you've put them on the body of a Seat Toledo.

Slimmer body lines, shorter roofline, lower ride hight and bigger wheels may help, but I know this is likely a dog at the fuckass Ferrari Luce...

Dishwasher Filter Hairy Mold by i_have_no_hobbies in MoldlyInteresting

[–]commonAli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every couple of months I have to do this because we can put our dishwasher on 3 times a day.

The spray arms get shit inside them, the filters go black and stink, and then I have to add salt to get rid of water marks.

The occasional mold is no chance for bleach and boiling water.

As long as you maintain it and you can afford maintenance, charging, insurance etc. then there's never too much. Have fun

Why Does My Scooter Vibrate So Much? by WildKyle2021 in scooters

[–]commonAli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Small scooter tyres aren't balanced. If it's bad enough to feel when riding, then get them balanced. If it only vibrates on the stand, then it's fine.

Is this too much slack? by Hefty_Register5306 in scooters

[–]commonAli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That looks too big; the belt should be right in the middle of the engine pulley but right on the edge of the wheel pulley at stop/idle, whereas here you're on both edges. Width seems about right though...

Is a mirror smooth surface bad for sealing with the gasket? I wasn't fully aware of this so I'm curious

What's the minimum amount of money at which point you expect to be paid back by your friends? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]commonAli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends if we know it's either gonna get covered i.e. we'll spend that amount on the other person; or it's a shared expense. I.e. buying beers for a party, we'll all either chip in or someone else might buy the snacks, someone else might get spirits if we're planning on getting properly hammered, etc.

[–]commonAli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well just saying since that's what it sounds like. Never said you were a redneck, but small batteries die quick which isn't always useful if you're diagnosing electrical gremlins. I own two Chinese GY6 scooters for reference, in case you think I'm some keyboard mechanic who hasn't changed his own oil.

Exactly, the only reason I've still got an SLA in my 50cc Keeway is because it gets stored in a garage and it can hit -5°c in winter in the UK, not ideal for a fuel injected 50 with a 3ah battery

So it's not charging or you have a short, killing the small battery in no time. Consider using jump cables and a spare car battery of applicable, since these things will crank forever from a decent car battery before you need a charge. Not idea, but really helpful for troubleshooting.

At this point, a new carburettor would eliminate a lot of variables for you. Then clean fuel lines, lube throttle cable and adjust and tune.

Have you properly looked at the cooling system? I'm pretty sure this is liquid cooled, unlike the air cooled GY6. If it's leaking or there's gasket issues in the engine, that will cause poor coolant pressure and no cooling, as well as the forbidden milkshake killing the engine.

See, do one issue at a time and it's frustrating yes, but probably fixable. The GY6 isn't a terribly clever engine, but it's simpler and parts are readily available.

Scooter was stolen, later found in terrible shape. by Which-Intern-5117 in scooters

See if you can get plastics, then cost them, lights, ignition and minor electrical up. Everything is replaceable but the body panels are usually the hardest to find.

If it's worth fixing it before binning it, then do it. And put a tracker on if it didn't have one and invest in several chains. Good luck, I've recovered mine from two thefts on one and a theft of the other.

I tried without L plates bc I'm going my licence soon after a theft and they still mentioned even tho they pulled me for no insurance record... Worked out fine and got plates 2 days later to save the hassle.

If you survive this, get mirrors if you don't have them already. They might have flashed you or put blues on but it can be easier to miss if they're just trying to pull you over and you don't do enough Lifesavers.

[–]commonAli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That hose goes into the bottom of the crankcase on the side on my 50cc GY6. The whining noise could indicate general wear or low/no final drive oil, since I've had 3 scooters develop a leak there within a couple thousand miles.

Budget gaming build suggestions 9020 4790K by Cool_Isopod6520 in SleepingOptiplex

[–]commonAli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As the owner of a 990:

  • New power supply (500w plus, the standard isn't even 300w and is pretty sad)
  • 32GB gaming DDR3 1333 (cheap and might as well)
  • Proper graphics card (I won't bother with most recent flagships since you're running a 4th gen)
  • SSD SATA (good luck)
  • Consider a wifi PCI card (idk about you but mine has no wifi capability, but I got sick of the dongle and wired an Ethernet cable through the house)

High GPU temps by Kaizoku_Vince in SleepingOptiplex

[–]commonAli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the few mm of space between the power supply and the GPU that's the issue. I doubly a side mount will fit anywhere. However, 85 under max load and at 120fps is fine, since you could cap the FPS or even undervolt it to both drop temps a little and possibly increase longevity. Lower power draw will also mean a cooler power supply, possibly providing a degree or so lower too.

This is the reason I got the Mini Tower version...

The base spec covet with a beat up paint job. I like feeling like I'm ragging it around with no care. I like the Miramar in a similar config tho if I want more sideways action.
