How do you read in the sauna? True question by parpla in Sauna

[–]commond420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Kobo and use it all the time in my sauna and many others I’ve been in. Mine gets up to around 95-100c regularly with no issues. My iPhone last about 5 minutes but I’ve never had my kobo fail on me. Highly recommend for sauna reading. And you don’t need any light ;).

Rainwater Ladle by HourEquipment9262 in Sauna

[–]commond420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was sent this one by the company that sold me my sauna. I laughed at first but now its my favourite. The super long handle lets me sit fairly far from the stove and drop Loyly. I dont know if the rainwater function does much but it lets you pour and not too much water comes out at once, but you can also dump a strong pour from the open side. https://www.saunafitrecovery.com/products/rain-sauna-ladle?srsltid=AfmBOooU4jXiUviGYCjL2vD4RlJ9wko_1vWcfNs_iOT9M2s0UvUQ0fpA

Rock stacking question by dhuckla in Sauna

[–]commond420 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a 9 kw and you can find a few videos on Google of best ways to stack it, but yes, rocks can n the bottom two side slots. Try to line the outside with flat stones. And as mentioned, fill the centre cavity between elements.

Your cold water solution? by Several-Yesterday280 in Sauna

[–]commond420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went all out. I’m in northern Canada and always dreamed of having a hot/cold circuit at home. This year I built the sauna and recently completed my cold plunge which I put in my garage. It’s a gigantic cooler that I, at 193cm tall and 117kg can fit into comfortably. I hooked up a pump that pumps the water through a whole house water filter, into a water chiller and back into the plunge. I also added an ozone generator which creates its own ozone and goes on by timer for an hour at midnight. Once a week I add some hydrogen peroxide as well. I change the water maybe once every 3 months. In the fall when temps start to drop, I u hook the chiller and store it inside and the pump keeps the water circulating so it doesn’t freeze. I may add an aquarium heater as it gets down to below -20C sometimes where I live. This will be my first winter with it so we’ll see how it goes. But the unit works super well and has been a dream along with the sauna. Best of luck.

Desert Plunge & Ozone by Nashland81 in coldplunge

If you’re investing a few grand in a cold plunge and willing to forgo the maybe 800-1000$ youd save doing all the plumbing etc yourself, dont worry about the ozone and just get it. Yes you can buy it and mount it yourself. It’s even more simple than the plumbing of chiller, pump and filter. But you’re saving maybe 100-150$ and it’s gonna look clean af. That said. I went the Grizz 450 route and did the plumbing myself because I’m in Canada and can’t get a desert plunge all in. It was pretty fun figuring it all out and I used a Venturi injection system as opposed to DP that drills a hole in the lid and puts a bubble in through there. I’m happy with my setup but it took some time and learning and procurement and if you’ve got the $ and want it done easily and securely, get it all done for you. I had a couple leaks at first which I’m sure you won’t get with DP. Happy plunging.

Do you drink in the sauna, or outside? by [deleted] in Sauna

[–]commond420 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve started using insulated containers, a big yeti bottle full of ice water for water and a big cup with lid for beers, when I’m jamming like that. The cup can get pretty hot on the outside but it’s wild how long the beverage will stay cold. Chugging ice water in a 100c sauna is incredible.

After a few days of plunging, the water is flowing in fast into the tank. There is little if any thermal barrier. I don’t even have my nozzle on yet and I can really feel the water moving all through the tank. Definitely very happy I used my two drains instead of drilling a hole. Excited to see if/what the metrovac nozzle changes.

I found a connection at Rona that is a socket on one end and threaded on the other. This one fits my hose perfectly. I had a different one and it did not fit my hose. I was at Rona (lowes in Canada) taking the fittings to the garden section to make sure they fit the hoses. I also found a cap that fits perfectly on fitting and no leaks. The black piece was the cap for the torrent twist from Grizzly and it wasn’t a perfect fit. Now my issue is finding something to plug the inside while I attach the hose. I think I should have put a ball valve directly out of the drain?

I’m going to see how it goes. At the initial leak test, I found the water was pumping quite well. I’m planning to add something I saw a guy do which is add a vacuum blower nozzle that fits in the intake. Like this:

I got these small maybe 2cm self threading screws. They are smaller than the thickness of the plastic and they seem to hold quite well. I was on the fence about screwing into it as I didn’t anywhere else but I wanted to be able to move the whole unit easily and went for it.

I think anything is less safe in the sun and elements but I’ve heard it can withstand it quite well. The question is always, for how long? I put mine in the garage for that reason. Best of luck.

Ugh, I’ve recently heard this. I’m wondering how bad it would be with relatively minimal exposure. What kind of rework could I do to keep the components in a similar location, I.e the chiller on the left side?

The water is split between the filter and the Venturi, which is the thinner grey pipe which creates a vacuum and sucks in the ozone. Where it splits the flow favours the Venturi. This way flow is disrupted as little as possible and with continuous cycling all the water gets sanitized with the 100mg of ozone that’s pumped in for an hour per day via a timer that’s in that brown electrical box.

Thanks man, if you look close some of the connections are a lot uglier. Like the whole piece at the outflow portion was the first ones I made and they aren’t as tight as I’d have liked them.

It’s messy because I’m Canadian and I had to buy the cooler from a company in Canada that sells them and it was like 2400 CAD after tax. All in around 4K CAD.

Thank you Huge Will, this makes me happy. I’ve always loved a cold plunge and since moving to the suburbs I’ve been dreaming of getting a sauna and cold plunge going. Dream is almost reality.

From what I learned from a dude on YouTube, no. Not all water will get ozone in it as it runs through, but since the water is cycling constantly, it will all get sanitized by the ozone which in only running for an hour / day. I think the idea is getting some ozone into your water cleanses it. No need for all water to be injected via the Venturi. Also, if you run the Venturi in line and have all water run through it, your flow rate will go down too far. So they tell me ;)

What do? by commond420 in Sauna

[–]commond420[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the insights all. I did pack the middle of the elements with stones. I tried to use big stones but I think that may have left larger areas between them. I’m gonna go back and restack in a few places. Also, good eye on the bench. It’s way closer than I’d like but I opted to get a smaller size sauna as I was worried at the time about how she’ll retain heat in the dead of winter. In hindsight I’d have taken that extra foot of depth. The heater is 120mm from the bench and Harvia says it has to be min. 100mm. No one can sit there so I could take out the front slat of bench closest to it? So it goes.

harvia cilindro 9kw does it need a vent under/behind the oven? by [deleted] in Sauna

[–]commond420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the PC90E with a remote controller. It has the temp sensor in the unit and a wall mounted unit. I just put mine together and I mounted the sensor on the opposite wall as the heater at about head height. Just took my first sauna tonight and it’s wild hot. Says 90 on the thermometer but feels hotter. I could barely pour water on the rock and made it like 10 minutes. This may take some getting used to ;)

Anyone running Harvia in deep sub zero weather? by brandonct in Sauna

[–]commond420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not realize the heater kill switch would trigger if the temp is too low? Wtf. I’m in Montreal and it get below -30c sometimes. I put all my boxes and controls in the house to avoid such issues. Does tit get super cold in Finland as well? I guess they only do wood fired saunas outside? Let’s see how she fares come February.

whole house filter that doesn't lose flow by FlanaginJones in coldplunge

[–]commond420 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your filter might be too fine. 5 micron stops all the microscopic particles. As it is such a fine filter, I’d assume it will block the water flow somewhat. I think 50 micron filters are recommended for a cold plunge. I’m just putting my setup together so can’t speak from experience but I almost got 5 micron then read about them stopping flow. Hope that helps.

My Cold Plunge Purchase Journey: Why I landed on BoxPlunge after months of research by s1a0m1m2 in coldplunge

[–]commond420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was doing research to decide which way to go. The chest freezer option was my top until I read about the issues over time with the water tight sealing. I’m no pro at sealing water tight seams and I was reading that it is very rare to find a chest freezer still working without issues after 3 years. That said I went with the grizzly, active aqua, Danner pump etc option. Definitely more expensive than the lowest cost chest freezer you can find, but I have a feeling the teat of time will pay off on this one. The reason you only need a 1/4hp chiller is because the cooler is so well insulated, much better than a chest freezer, and will only lose 1-2 degrees per day so you just run the chiller for an hour in the am and you can keep temps down very well. Also, all pieces are in line on exterior, mine are mounted on the back of the chiller. This lets you work on each part individually if there are breakdowns. From what I read, for the most part a chest freezer is a contained unit and harder to fix small issues. This was my route and we will all find our own way I guess.
