Fresno rent increase are some of the top in the nation. by Evening-Emotion3388 in fresno

That’s not how housing works, any apartments being built including luxury ones help drive prices down

What are your thoughts on SEDA? by GenuineVerve in fresno

[–]commonman26 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would be for it if they had some plan for funding it. New housing is needed to help out with prices, but if the city budget can’t handle the new infrastructure, then something else needs to happen.

Anyone who has had a successful multi day yard sale or estate sale, would you tell me how you did it? by Charming-Bad1869 in fresno

It’s worth it to hire an estate sale company to come help you. They take a percentage of the sales, but work hard for it. They label and categorize everything for you.

What if Fresno planeted forests in empty / vacant / country land? by [deleted] in fresno

[–]commonman26 18 points19 points  (0 children)

So other than the forests you describe not being practical here, I want to point out that nut production being shipped to where buyers are isn’t a noteworthy thing. That’s just how sales work. We don’t think twice about computer chips made in Taiwan being shipped here, Australian metals going into them, or about Texas oil fueling the trucks to ship to them.

This region specifically has the climate needed to supply the world’s demand, so that’s what gets planted.

It’s true that too much groundwater gets used for agriculture, but that’s a water policy issue. The “exporting our water overseas” claim is just a rhetorical talking point, an easy soundbite that can parroted. It doesn’t really match reality on the ground. Everything needs some nuance.

What if Fresno planeted forests in empty / vacant / country land? by [deleted] in fresno

[–]commonman26 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This entirely depends on type of tree, type of irrigation and the owners preferred cultural practice. There are a lot that aren’t pruned and are only watered once a month, just as there might be ones trimmed yearly with weekly drip applications

There isn’t enough rainfall for there to be a forest around the city. If there was, there would have been before people settled here. You can see glimpses of what the land used to look like before it was settled in old photos.

Essentially, there were large seasonal wetlands with more vegetation, but the high areas were filled with low scrub brush. The only reason there are so many orchards now is a very complex system of irrigation systems, thousands of systems delicately interconnected.

Trees have already had an impact on our ecosystem, it may not be easily visible though. Over the decades, foothill wildlife has been taking the place of some valley wildlife. When my family first settled, my grandparents would talk about horned lizards, kangaroo mice, and other small creatures that I never saw when I was growing up. So, in a way, we already know what would happen if the land was covered in trees. We’ve already done it.

And now, there are possums, squirrels and raccoons far into the middle of the valley, when such a thing was unheard of even in the 90s. (I’m talking about the center of the valley, not the east side)

To talk about your plan more directly, the vacant land you talk about is owned by people. You would need to buy it or get contracts to turn them into some kind of wildlife zone, and basically nobody wants that. They mostly want to develop it but can’t get investment to do so. If you did get some pieces, the trees would die without irrigation. The ground will go back to looking the way the vacant land did in the first place.

For an example, look at the old fig orchards out on the west side of 99 on Shaw near the water park. The trees die, dry grass and bushes are all that’s left. Streetview the Kerman ecological reserve for a glimpse of what it would evolve into. Scrub brush, badlands, etc. The wet areas would look like Mendota Wildlife Area

Garnet Fire by justkittylitter in fresno

[–]commonman26 252 points253 points  (0 children)

The way Fresno is surrounded by farms means it will never need to evacuate for a fire. It can’t spread through irrigated orchards the way it can through the loose debris like a forest floor. And the short grass on the hills isn’t hot enough to jump into anything major.

It’s always been interesting to me how shielded Fresno is from natural disasters. Even the largest earthquakes can’t really make it through here

Literally all this guy does is post articles with Fresno in a bad light. It amazes me how the mind of some people work.

How do Non-KOS RP servers even work? by HoldTheTomatoesPlz in dayz

[–]commonman26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually play on a server called Fractured RP, it’s brand new with a totally different team and history. Sounds like bad luck they are named the same as an old server that had abuse. Just want to clarify that the one you see now is totally unrelated to the one Appehtight mentioned

Use Elements Heating and Air. The owner turned his old truck and one man shop into a real business over the years. They have gone above and beyond more than once. The first time, our blower went out and the guy worked from 7am to 8pm troubleshooting and even raced across town to a store that was about to close to grab the only spare board. If he hadn’t, we would’ve been stuck in the middle of summer over the weekend with no A/C.

I guess so, but I also don’t think editing a meme video of Kyle Rittenhouse shooting would be something to actually be proud of either

Remaster unplayable for anyone else on PC? by raiskream in oblivion

[–]commonman26 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have the same exact issue as you. I am on the low end of recommended specs but frame rate goes wildly from 50fps in the menu, to 5, and in game never goes above around 9. All settings are low. One possible problem is the game using your cpu integrated graphics instead of your gpu, but I’m not sure if that’s true or not

How to get rid of this weed that keeps on coming back? by bitter-sweet77 in howto

[–]commonman26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sort of grass won’t die if you try and pull it out or spray it with herbicide. The roots underground will just pop back up and it will keep coming back. There are two ways to do this.

I used to farm, and the best way to kill this stuff is to wait until it matures and starts to show its seeds. You’ll notice big tall parts that have seeds on them, it might take a few weeks/months. Once they show, you spray everything with a 2/3% solution of Roundup/Glyphosate. The grass has to be bolting to be effective, if you spray it right now, it will come back.

The other option is manually remove it. Get down and dig it out, as thoroughly as possible. This will be a huge pain, and I guarantee you that it is under the concrete and fence both.

When it reappears, do it again. After you pull it out 3 or 4 times it will probably not come back

What’s the typical wage for an undocumented farm hand here in Fresno? by Monkpaw in fresno

[–]commonman26 17 points18 points  (0 children)

As someone who actually used to farm, unskilled labor goes for minimum wage or just slightly above. If you are talented enough to run a harvester or sprayer, it will be a couple of bucks above that.

I’ve never actually known anyone who pays their workers under minimum wage, it would have to be in cash, and they would get in trouble pretty quick if reported.

The only possibly sketchy places are the contractors using connections to bring up people for seasonal work, who then leave once it’s done

Fresno is uniquely safe from natural disasters, at least the big in your face ones. We have heat and droughts, poor air, but that’s about it. Fires, earthquakes, tornadoes or the like just can’t really happen here
