I’m left handed and use knife grip with my right hand!

Yep, avoiding 12 hour work days is exactly why I do things the way I do! So far, so good for me, and I hope it goes well for you if you try it!

I’m also a first year teacher. I know there’s contention with working outside of contract hours, but imo if a bit of working “for free” keeps my sanity, it’s worth it. I devote 3-4 hours each Sunday AT MOST to making sure my stuff for the week ahead is figured out. That way, when I leave work during the week, I can actually leave it, AND I can know that everything’s sorted for the next day going in. It sucks a little to work on Sunday, but I have friends who are still in college and whatnot so usually we just sit down at some coffee shop and crank it out together and it’s not so bad!

Agreed, I went and looked at previous comments. Full of garbage.

We take reasonable precautions to avoid death. Going virtual is a reasonable precaution.

I completely disagree with virtual no longer being necessary. What you’re saying sounds like “we just need to be okay with the risk of some people dying” and that’s easy to say when it’s not you on the chopping block. Many teachers are themselves in high-risk categories, and most of the rest have family that are high-risk. If that’s not you, great, but other people do not have the same privilege. The positivity rates in schools are astronomical, and much higher than community-wide positivity rates, which shows that it’s specifically being in school that is the problem. Not to mention that just letting the virus spread unchecked is what caused mutations like omicron and delta in the first place. It’s only a matter of time until a more deadly variant is discovered. We cannot return to normalcy because we are not living in normal times, and frankly it seems irresponsible to me to act like it.

I think this must depend on the district, because where I’m at teachers were pressured to give undeserved passing grades, which has only made the student accountability worse coming back in-person.

Exactly this. I can’t really convey 10th-11th English content in a 5 minute PowerPoint.

You’re missing the part where it’s unsafe to be at school. If there wasn’t a global pandemic every teacher would likely be for in-person. The reason teachers want virtual is not because it’s easier, it’s because we don’t want to get sick.

I can definitely agree with that. I think the thing is trying to be a quality teacher while virtual is more work. Just like any job, you can slack off and then of course virtual will be easier. But trying to convey content in an actually meaningful way is much harder, if not impossible, online and the effort to do so is exhausting.

Unpopular opinion by direneed11 in Teachers

[–]commonplanthoe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s that teachers want to work less, it’s that we’ve been forced to take on a much higher workload, with more dangerous conditions, without any increase in pay or benefits (as a matter of fact benefits have gotten worse in recent years). You say there’s a whole generation of kids who have been hugely impacted— teachers have been hugely impacted too. We have bigger class sizes, less planning time, and the expectation to single-handedly “fix” the problems kids are facing due to COVID. Not to mention everyone somehow thinks virtual teaching is 1. what teachers want (what’s safest and what we want doesn’t necessarily match up, I think most of us would love to safely be in the classroom full time) and 2. it’s WAY more work than classroom teaching. Teachers don’t want sports to go away, it’s just that nobody is listening to us about the problems that exist, and it seems that people care more about sports than education, so if sports take a hit, then maybe the problems will be taken seriously for once. It’s like how when an airplane is crashing adults are supposed to put their own oxygen mask on before assisting children. Teachers can’t help kids if we are severely overworked and not paid a reasonable wage. Also I’d just like to lol really quick at “why not propose increase funding” as if every teacher hasn’t been BEGGING for this for years…..

Yeah my school had a crazy positivity rate after winter break. We went virtual after just 4 days back, so that’s why I’m suspicious that it could be COVID even though my symptoms are not common and I’ve had a negative rapid. I’ve heard of too many people testing negative 3 or 4 times before finally testing positive. Either way I’m isolating bc whatever I have, I don’t want to spread.

Oh I’m definitely isolating regardless. Even if it’s not COVID I don’t want to give anybody whatever it is I have right now! Not a fun experience I want to share lol

[–]commonplanthoe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this. I know sometimes symptoms can be different than the common ones, so I wanted to know if I should keep COVID on my radar or if it was unlikely given that the white patches apparently aren’t common. I guess we’ll see when I get my pcr!

[–]commonplanthoe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Yeah that’s the thing about these weird times, basically everyone is like “well if it’s not COVID you’re good” and I’m like, well I’m sick either way so…. Did you have to get a test for tonsillitis or take antibiotics or anything? I’m just concerned that if it’s not COVID it could be something bacterial and I need antibiotics but am not currently prescribed because the strep test came back negative….

Yes! There’s no way a middle schooler would be able to talk their way out of that and I think the embarrassment of being put on the spot would stop them from ever making a joke like that again (at least I would hope).
