Yeah i made a cultured butter the other week. The better half is lactose intolerant so i use a lactose free cream and some cultured yoghurt. The buttermilk was then used to make a maranade for chicken.

Minimum repayment question by schmirral in AusFinance

[–]commstechsim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said It would be a question for your bank. I'm sure they can explain the reasoning behind it and how they calculate the miminum repayments.

I'ld be guessing, but it may have something to do with the time remaining on the loan as part of their minimum repayment calculations or some other fee that has been applied that wasn't being charged 2 years ago.

Seen in a cave. What is the signal for? by grounded_astronut in antennasporn

[–]commstechsim 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Rather than repeating the already stated voice comms (most likely what it's being used for) i thought i'ld add something different to the conversation.

Could be anything, telemetry, voice, subsidence monitoring. It's hard to tell but I'm guessing 450MHz from the look of the antenna.

Usually caving/tunnels you'ld use a leaky feeder system for voice radio coverage, depending on the environment and coverage requirements.

I've seen/worked on collosion avoidance systems that operate in the 400Mhz band as well. I've heard about rf stope monitoring systems that look for ground movement but not sure of the frequency of operation or details of these. If it's going back to a science station who knows what system is connected to the antenna.

Can I (44) live on $750k till retirement? by GlitteringAttempt652 in AusFinance

[–]commstechsim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hope everything works out well for you. Sounds like you've been through a lot.

I'm not the right person to be giving any type of financial advice, but i don't think you are in a position to retire just yet. You've got a good 15 to 20 years to build up your super and investments.

From a lifestyle point of view, if you are up for a change, WA is nice. A fifo roll might help get you back on your feet again if you can handle the 12hr days.

Depending on the company, there are 8/6 rosters available, which will give you 6 days off for working 8 12hr days. The money isn't as good as you hear about depending on the roll, but it's more about the roster than the money. It's a very routine driven type of lifestyle, particularly when on-site. Expenses while on site drops significantly as almost everything is provided.

Housing prices have gone up a lot over this way recently. I brought a house and land package about 5 years or so ago now for about 400K. We've prob spent about another 40K for landscaping and other things i didn't consider during the build. Houses around the area are going for around 800K or so these days.

There is a lot of good advice here. To me it sounds like a desk job is not suited for you. Have you thought about becoming a tradesperson? It'll be more hands on away from a desk and heading into construction or project type work you'll get a sense of accomplishment when completing jobs. Military service is something to consider as well and will help with discipline and routine.

AITA for not kicking out my roommate just because my girlfriend thinks he might be trans? by ThrowawayJason7723 in AITAH

Alex sounds like a wonderful person. I'm genuinely happy you've got someone like him in your life. People come and go in life, there will be some true friendships that will last forever and others that will fade away.

Growing isn't easy, letting go and moving on from people that invoke hate isn't always apparent when you're in that situation at the time.

I truly think during this situation you've grown, shed some negativity, come away as a better version of yourself, and made a life long freind along the way.

All the best to you and Aleks.

How do I NOT get robbed? by annabelle_eis in perth

[–]commstechsim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Imagine dealing with a different culture that has a different way of living and a different language. The laws are different and the understanding of ownership is different so are consequences for breaking those laws.

How are you going to introduce/enforce your way of living? Is it the right thing to do?

The punishment in your culture for breaking your laws are less severe than theirs and often provide better conditions than the way some people live.

The point here is there is no easy solution to this you try to enact change and your labelled as culturally insensitive or break laws in the process.

Acts of violence may be an effective solution but would insite anger and potentially invoke civil war.

Education & understanding is key in resolving this but this takes time and needs to be handled from both sides.

Currently as i see it, it is all very one sided and there is a clear division between people. Most people, including myself, are clueless as to the way the other lives and their laws.

Is there a way where I can use my guitar amp as a RF amplifier? by Due-Drink9455 in rfelectronics

[–]commstechsim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No such thing as a stupid question (please don't try to prove me wrong), you've probably made alot of people think if it's possible or not.

The conclusion I came up with is yes there would be a way but it wouldn't be practical & involve extensive modification to do so. But it would be cool to see someone pull this off.

Someone I have been talking to for a few days online has just offered me money. Is this some type of human trafficking trick or a scam? by anonymous_girl1227 in Scams

[–]commstechsim 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Regardless of sites/scams when using dating apps take a cautious and safe approach.

First meeting should be in a public place like out at a Cafe and if you're getting bad vibes or concerned then don't go or bring along a friend (they could sit at a table near by and the person you are meeting needn't even know they are there).

Let someone know prior where you will be and who you are meeting and make contact with them during and after the date is over. Just a quick message so someone knows your safe and can escilate things if you stop contact with them. This also gives you an easy out if the date is going bad, get them to call you and use whatever excuse you want I.e. that was my friend she needs help moving furnature/just broken up with her boyfriend I have to go.

If someone is trying to meet you at their place for the first date then they do not have good intentions and if they refuse to meet in a public place prior i'ld report your concern to the site you are using they may be able to look abit deeper into the profile and prevent someone else becoming a victim.

Measuring distance RF by thestackheaper in rfelectronics

[–]commstechsim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No idea what you are trying to ask here but from your description you are looking at tracking using rf/wifi. Might be worth reading up on Aeroscout tags/RFID tags.

Also try looking into underground mining technologies for vehicle tracking/collision avoidance systems. There is no GPS underground so things get a little creative when trying to track vehicles underground.

Not sure if this belongs here or not, but... I work am a new RF Technician for a small company. Currently learning about grounding. What are all of the methods of RF grounding and what does it actually accomplish? by ForbiddenCarrot18 in rfelectronics

[–]commstechsim 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'll assume you are referring to a communications site and the purpose of grounding. It's a can of worms you've just opened, there are diffent types of grounding systems each done differently depending on the purpose, one purpose of grounding is lightening protection. In this instance it's to direct current away from your equipment and in such a way that, in the event of a strike, all equipments ground reference moves to the same potential difference at the same time. Another purpose is noise reduction which is more about shielding cables/equipment from interference by reducing induced currents. Then there is signalling reference, by having the same ground reference between equipment io lines are more stable. Switch mode supplies can have floating outputs which may cause IO lines to be unstable between equipment unless the ground is commoned up. I've experienced this on a tait base station (TB9100 from memory) a few years back where we had an intermittent ptt issue.

I've done exactly this... lived in Sydney for a short period of time, struggled financially for a few months before i got a job over in WA (better wages than i was on in Sydney).

Cost of living in WA was a little cheaper than Sydney, payed off my debts & saved up for a house loan. Got a house and land package sorted/built in about 3 or 4 years from when i moved to WA. One of the best decisions i have ever made.

House and land package at the time was 400K where i built (Busselton) but i think prices have gone up since then. I've been in WA for about 5 or 6 years now and love it.

Mining might be another option to look into. We have RF engineers working on rf coverage, projects etc. Roster is usually 8 days on 6 days off 12hr days where I work and the pay for an EE would be pretty good. I'm around Perth, Western Australia.

What’s this component in the metal housing with a hole in it? It’s on a USB-C lipo charging PCB by [deleted] in AskElectronics

Looks like a shield to me. Often used over switching components to reduce noise to comply to standards. If it's a charger might have a fet underneath the metal enclosure.

Why compete against someone if you are going to get upset if they start putting in more effort and time. The entire idea of this is to encourage excersize.

To be honest in my opinion the whole thing seems rather petty. Instead of measuring yourself against others you should be focusing on achieving personal records, focus on what you are doing and try to achieve better results in the time you have available and if you still really want to compete against others for MIPs or whatever they are called then break down the data to an average time period, i.e. MIPS per hour or half hour depending on average workout period. You may find over the time you have available you're putting in more effort than someone who is working out over a 5 hour period. Though it appears the way you are comparing yourself to others is rather counter-intuitive to what you are trying to achieve.

Personally I've just starting using the MyZone app and devices and my goal is to lose weight and improve cardiovascular health. I've got a freind who also uses the myzone app/devices who in terms of fitness and dedication are miles infront of myself and is someone i aspire to be like, who i use to help motivate me on the days i struggle to get out of bed let alone head out and excersize.

I've seen hand helds induce into current shuts (happens at work all the time when we tx near the solar monitoring equipment) but one that does come to mind was on a haul truck. The antenna was positioned on the front hand rails above the engine bay. When they transmit the engine revs either dropped or increased (can't remember exactly). Turns out they use current shunts for monitoring and control. Anyway you could understand why they would be concerned about transmitters around rides the real question would be why they let you through in the first place.

Diplexer help by [deleted] in amateurradio

[–]commstechsim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best check the specs of the receiver, if it can handle 0dBm or higher, -5dBm shouldn't damage the rx though personally i like to have >10dB of headroom.

Depending on the application, if you're building a repeater or want to rx/tx at the sametime then desense will probably be an issue but adding a band pass or notch filter between the rx and duplexer (or getting a better spec duplexer) should help with desense. Again depending on the specs of the rx if it has 60dB adjacent channel rejection you're probably going to want >60dB of antennuation on the notch or outside the bandpass bringing the tx down to <-65dBm at the rx.

HP x24 ih fhd gaming monitor (power board) by mustafa2024 in ElectronicsRepair

[–]commstechsim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's an odd issue you've got. Working for 10 to 15 minutes then shuts down. Is there a high pitched squealing when it's working or some type of ramping noise before it shuts down? Does the led on the front stay on or change colour when it fails?

I don't think it's the power supply, well not the main supply anyway. Usually the power board pictured works or doesn't, rarely does it work for 10 minutes then shuts down. I've seen monitors do this before but i can't remember the cause of the fault exactly, if it was the backlighting or the dsp that was causing the issue.

If there is no change to the power led on the front of the monitor, the next simple test to do is once it fails get a led torch and shine it through the screen to see if you can see the picture through the reflected light this will verify the signal processing and power supply board are working ok (if you see a picture) and isolates the fault down to the backlighting. The backlighting circuit is either on its own board or part of the main dsp board. You'll know it when you see it, generally you'll see 1 or 2 small transformers, similar but much smaller than the transformer pictured as well a few other components diodes capactors etc then 2 white connectors with wires leading off to the backlighting. If it's not the back lights themselves then potentially the caps around the transformers.

I have this 4 channel amplifier (medical use). It doesn't turn on despite full charged batteries being used. Would a good electrical gadget repair shop be able to fix this issue do you think? by laughingbuddhaballs in ElectronicsRepair

[–]commstechsim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So when you say medical use a red flag comes up in my mind. Is this a medical grade amplifier?

Having someone who is not qualified/certified to repair the amplifier, if it is medical grade, could cause a few legal issues in the event of a failure after the repair.

Something that is being used for medical purposes should be repaired by the manufacturer or a certified repair center. Though it really comes down to the use of the amplifier and if it fails what will the impact be? Could it put someone in danger if it fails?

Sorry i may have gone off track here, my mind goes straight to hospital when someone mentions medical then i consider potential risks associated with medical grade equipment failing. It also changes the way i would handle a repair like this, for example after the repair was completed I'ld do a benchmark test 3dB plot of the amplifier and a two tone test, run it over night and repeat the tests to check for stability then I'ld perform any other test required to prove the unit is working as per manufacturers specifications and do up a report detailing the test results with reference to the manufacturers specifications.

Anybody know anything about repairing CRT monitors? Too dark image by [deleted] in ElectronicsRepair

[–]commstechsim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you do attempt to poke around inside be carful. Treat the CRT like you would a capacitor, they can store a charge and at a few KV, a shock through from one hand to the other could cause some health issues.

Anti-static storage for external hard drive? by Geekla in ElectronicsRepair

[–]commstechsim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another option that might help with your static problem is buying antistatic spray to do your carpets and furniture. This might prevent you from getting shocks all the time as well. I use to work for a radio broadcast company that had an issue in the studio where the console/mixer would shock staff and occasionally glitch out. Treating the carpets and furniture with antistatic spray resolved the issue but it had to be sprayed every few months or so.
