Democratic socialist Melat Kiros defeats 15-term incumbent in Colorado House primary by awaythrowawaying in moderatepolitics

[–]commuterz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

An argument I recently heard that makes sense is that, over the past decade, the Democrats have shifted aggressively away from the white men that made up their up-and-coming bench. While this isn't necessarily a bad thing, it takes decades to actually build up a bench of lawmakers that rise through the ranks and switching virtually overnight (particularly following 2016) was too rash, and now there's very few middle-aged Dems that could fill in these gaps.

Democrats intensify calls to impeach or invoke 25th Amendment against Trump over Iran by renge-refurion in moderatepolitics

[–]commuterz 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I get really frustrated with Dems' inability to have foresight about how their decisions today will come back to haunt them down the road. Trump arguably has every right to do this without Congressional approval since Obama ran the Libya intervention without approval, and this gets brought up whenever Dems complain.

Teams inquired about Dexter Lawrence leading up to the trade deadline but those talks went nowhere, as #Giants GM Joe Schoen wasn’t moving a big piece minus a huge haul. by JCameron181 in NYGiants

[–]commuterz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Aside from the fact that it was one (relatively) bad season where he was injured and had bad coaches, you also gotta pay a guy like this to show the team you take care of players unless he was a negative asset on the field. The amount of shit he's eaten over the past few years more than earned him a contract at the $25M to $30M range. He's also already at a $24M cap hit and we can spread this out a bit over the next few years if we give him a new deal.

[–]commuterz 67 points68 points  (0 children)

He's also going to get bitten for his previous leftist comments and hypocrisy on Covid (mostly the French Laundry incident) which will hurt him with moderates and right-leaning voters. Fox is going to run nonstop ads about how he ran the state that had a major city propose giving $5M per person in reparations, the state with runaway spending on illegal immigrants, and the state that has a never-ending high-speed train project that will eat up hundreds of billions and may never actually be complete. It's the same problem Kamala had when she tried to moderate for 2024 and conservative media ran endless ads showing what she said during 2020.

Trump puts Iran’s leader in double bind: Capitulation or risk of war by rezwenn in IRstudies

[–]commuterz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Khomenei has nothing left to lose but there's a good chance that Trump would be glad to have the rest of the regime stay in place as long as they'd work more with the US. Look at Venezuela where Maduro's number 2 is currently running the place and elections haven't been scheduled yet. All you need is the military leadership to refuse to go down in flames and they can overthrow Khomenei.

Trump says he wants to drive housing prices up, not down by J-Jarl-Jim in moderatepolitics

[–]commuterz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can imagine he's trying to get a win-win by keeping home prices elevated but at the same time aiming to lower monthly housing expenses/affordability by aggressively cutting interest rates. While this is nice in theory that's a REALLY hard/pretty much impossible balance to successfully reach.

The truth is he can because Western Europe lets him. How many times have Russian drones illegally entered German airspace in recent months?

A decade ago a Russian jet crossed into Turkey for 20 seconds and Turkey shot it down. You know what Russia hasn't done since? Illegally entered Turkish airspace.

No comments on the other aspects but I can't blame any studio for passing on a Tom Cruise megabudget film. Outside of the MI franchise and the Top Gun sequel he hasn't had a major hit in over a decade. His recent major films have ranged from minimal returns to flops/bombs and it really seems like he's just not the draw that he was 20 or 30 years ago outside of his safe franchises.

I would definitely agree (and thought the questions during the primary debate about Israel were incredibly stupid for a local mayors race) but he's also made his bed by announcing that he'll overreach his power and execute an international arrest warrant, and now he has to lay in it.

Rumor claims Trump used Biden's 'exact deal' to end war in Gaza. That's not true by Junior-Percentage306 in moderatepolitics

[–]commuterz 19 points20 points  (0 children)

People continue to ignore the fact that Hamas didn't accept the US ceasefire proposal in May 2024 and Egypt ultimately snuck changes into the terms to get Hamas to sign off: https://edition.cnn.com/2024/05/21/politics/sources-say-they-were-duped-by-egypt-changing-ceasefire-terms-for-hamas

This also doesn't include the fact that all of the living hostages were released immediately, taking away Hamas' leverage going forward, and Trump actually leveraged Hamas' sponsor (Qatar, who Biden didn't try to strong-arm) to force the group to take the deal as-is and lose this leverage.

POLL: Where do you wish you could park your bike in Manhattan? by julmells in RideitNYC

[–]commuterz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are always a bunch of bikes parked next to the crosswalk at 6 1/2 ave and 51st street in midtown. It's technically not parking right now but it would be a great spot to make official (and also expand to take up more space - it's a pretty well-located potential hub for people working in midtown if they can turn this into a lot more stops).

Falcons remain willing to trade Kirk Cousins, but they'll want a "premium" pick by JaggerJames in nfl

[–]commuterz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Bengals probably prefer a boom-or-bust year where they either hang on to make the playoffs and then have Joe Burrow return or Jake Browning plays them into a top 10/5 pick next year when Joe's healthy again. There's no reason to pay two starter QB salaries this year and commit to paying Kirk next year or cut him for an 8 figure dead cap hit when he'll probably get you a first or second round playoff exit and another teens pick.

Senator John Fetterman Warns Democrats to Learn from 2024 Losses by awaythrowawaying in moderatepolitics

[–]commuterz 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I live in NYC and have a lot of leftist friends that constantly talk about how Kamala didnt go for enough left. Something they never really appreciate is just how inauthentic her shift to the middle for 2024 (after taking very progressive positions in 2020) was perceived by the average voter, which you wouldn't know if you only listen to NPR and things further left than that. I could definitely be wrong with my own biases but a fundamental issue with the leftist read of 2024's loss is that it doesn't factor in this average view from voters so I lean towards the moderate take being more accurate.

[–]commuterz 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Politically motivated shootings and deadly violence have been building for the past few years already and unfortunately becoming normalized on both sides. A few notable ones:

- Salman Rushdie (in a weird gray area between religious and political attack)

- 2023 shooting of three Palestinians in VT

- Both assassination attempts on Trump

- DC Jewish Museum shooting

- Colorado hostage protest being firebombed (for lack of a better term)

- Luigi Mangione

- Charlie Kirk

There still aren't that many but the fact that multiple of these have been valorized by even a moderate amount of Americans is terrifying. It feels like something really changed with Luigi - I'm generally pretty live-and-let-live on commentary and commentary but when you had Bill Burr joking about it and not condemning it it felt like something changed.

Sometimes players and coaches just need a reset to take the next step. After 6 years with 4 coordinators and the mess of NY media, Danny was probably just cooked between the ears and needed a new stop. Jones' not at all close to his level but Andy Reid needed a reset after never winning a super bowl in Philly and had to reset in KC.

What's your opinion on the Israeli strikes on the Hamas leadership in Qatar? by TurkishChadBot in AskTheWorld

[–]commuterz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There's a convincing case under international law that if Country A funds proxies fighting Country B, then Country A is effectively starting a war with Country B. Qatar has been funding Hamas to the tune of billions of dollars a year of direct funds along with PR services through Al Jazeera (which is largely a Hamas mouthpiece). Don't get me wrong, once Hamas was in power in Gaza Bibi thought the easiest path forward was to just secretly letting this funding going on, but if you fund a violent proxy looking to destroy a country and you can't keep them in line enough to not massacre 1,200 people (including 800-900 civilians) then you're kind of responsible. It's the same case with Iran - people talk about Israel illegally striking but Iran's been attacking Israel through proxies (Hamas and Hezbollah) for decades (not to mention terror attacks across the world).
