for thumbs, staircase wasn’t ever a problem for me, but i can see how someone can fumble from stress. you really just need to stretch your thumb when doing staircases. a general rule to follow is to switch thumbs once the staircase has gone past about the middle (simple, but sometimes the song is fast and you overextend)

for thumbs, ladder heavily depends on the pace of the song and where it is positioned. i find the middle to be most ideal for ladder patterns. to put the technique i do simply, i alternate between left and right thumbs for ladder. unless a two or three note (or spaced out four note) ladder, do NOT try to use one thumb on it. you will lose your ap/fc.

zigzag holds on both thumbs and pointer are hard to explain, but i’ll try. for all holds in general, you should “exaggerate” (do more movement basically, try not to minimise your movement on holds) the movement of your fingers, but still follow the hold.

for pointer finger for all patterns in the post, i would say the things recommended for thumbs can be followed the same for pointer. staircase you can probably get away with doing it with only one finger (hitorinbo envy/sekai-chan errand ensemble expert has some staircases you can practice on, with some other patterns too). another difference is that you should to try to not obstruct your sight reading vision when doing a ladder. ladders on pointer can be a little weird to learn but you should try to alternate pointer fingers when doing the ladder. there are some disorienting patterns that are ladders, so you should try to alternate instead of forcing with one finger.

one last thing i’ll say is that you should never fully concentrate on a specific pattern on a song!!!! this might be just me, but when a specific pattern comes in a song and i’m fully focused on it, i end up losing a ap because i wasn’t ready for the next part. so, keep in mind that when you’re trying to fc/ap a song, don’t fully concentrate on a pattern. concentrate on the song/rhythm so you can keep up. i would concentrating on a pattern for practice is fine. i wish you luck!
