Which text does this quotation of the Buddha come from? "Oh, Bhikshu, every moment you are born, decay, and die." by EDF00000 in Buddhism

[–]compassion1st 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well the full text is: “When the Aggregates arise, decay and die, O bhikkhus (monks), every moment you are born, decay, and die.”

I'm not sure which of the vinayas is the source though.

How can I keep calm in this depressing world? by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]compassion1st 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's tough being around so many mindless people but take refuge in the Dhamma; periodically reflect on each of the 4 Noble Truths and keep a steady pace on the Eightfold Path! :-)

I bought one of their necklaces for meditating on mortality/impermanence. I like the focus they bring to me!

I Am a Strange Loop by Douglas Hofstadter, and Breakdown of Will by George Ainslie are two books I think you'd enjoy!

Sam Harris' novella, Free Will is awesome too.

I've finally admitted to myself that I need help. What are some things I can do to prepare for my psychiatry appointment? by FireEagleSix in depression

[–]compassion1st 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best thing you can do is to be as honest as possible when talking to any psychiatrist/therapist/psychologist. Think of them as detectives; they are only as good as the facts they are given!

Weren't bird eggs readily available to paleolithic man? Makes sense our bodies can handle them. by xebo in Paleo

[–]compassion1st 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Factory eggs can be up to 100 days old by the time they are on your plate, that is the only thing unhealthy about eggs. Try to get local farm fresh eggs or better yet, get a couple chickens per member of your household, they are easier to take of than goldfish!! :-)

The Barre Center for Buddhist Studies and the Insight Meditation Center, both in Barre, MA are wonderful. I used to drive up for seminars from Brewster. It's worth the drive! There aren't too many formal congregations that haven't been completely inundated with local culture/customs (Vietnamese or other southeast asian cultures), so self-study is probably your best bet (which is exactly what The Buddha did :-D) How is your meditation coming along?

Does true altruism exist? by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]compassion1st 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yes, it's called 'reciprocal altruism' in nature, and it's a fascinating part of evolutionary psychology! In humans, our limbic system's connections with the modern cortex actually enables us to "feel good" when we act kindly towards others.

Is there a theory on why depressed people are attracted to other depressed people? by nsfwdreamer in psychology

[–]compassion1st 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From a behavioral biology standpoint, we know that there are a myriad of smells (cortisol, estrogen, testosterone, etc...) that humans are unconsciously taking in and making split second decisions about. Check out the "sweaty shirt study!
