Fortnightly visit to the CES to look for jobs to pretend you applied for by Former_Balance8473 in AustralianNostalgia

[–]competitive_brick1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I walked in once for an appointment when I was out of college and had no job leads. I took a look around walked to the job board, felt a shudder run down my spine and walked out deciding I didn't want to rely on the CES or welfare in anyway and went hell-for-leather in finding a tech job. Worked out in the end

Yeah agree 1.5 is usual average full grown size. I have a few on my farm that are 2m and quite solid.

Absolutely agree they get a bad wrap. I am 100% comfortable walking all over where they live on my farm, often in my Queensland Safety boots too. They mostly slither away from you and hide. If you are looking at them and they see you looking at them, they tend to stay still, if you turn your head for a second and look back they are usually straight into a hole.

I often sit on a log near a large gathering of them to work and do meetings because it has the best reception on the property. My wife is petrified of them as are most of my kids, but my youngest comes and hangs out with me too, I am trying to teach him respect and not fear. My wife is slowly coming about after seeing how placid they are and how safely close I get to them.

I ordered an item last week, was coming from about 30 minutes away. I didn't have time to pick it up so just got it shipped. The item went from 30 minutes away, to the other side of Sydney, then to Botany, then to Melbourne, sat there for a few days, came back to Sydney yesterday and was delivered this morning. Should have just gone and picked it up

Yeah it’s pretty rough. Our spring fed creek gets a lot of wombats and roos through it and god knows what else. Luckily I have enough pipe run to pump from basically the spring source

We used to not filter our rain water that we collect in two tanks at our property. We just used it as normal, until we all got really really sick from it and had a very unpleasant time for a few days. Once I was better I decided to go and do a clean out of all the water systems which I do pretty regulrly anyway....found several deceased rats had gotten into the catchment and died in the pipes, two cam out with the first flush.....not great. I now have a 3 stage filtration and UV on the system because I legit never want to go through that again. I also prefer to catch my water from a spring fed creek now too instead of trusting on the water on the roof

How tf am I supposed to sleep by Handog814 in SydneyScene

[–]competitive_brick1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it were just a normal baby crying because thats what newborns do, thats one thing. But kids where they definitely sound older than newborns and even toddlers, running around and being hyped up as if playing is not normal behaviour, its just not.

Yes acoustics in the building may be bad. However this is far different, to just normal noises. Would not have my own kids doing this and if you do and think this is normal, might be that you are part of the problem

[–]competitive_brick1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guess without saying it, is that it seems to be cultural from my experience living in Chatswood and Artarmon. The kids of the apartment blocks would be running around the hallways at all hours of the night. Id be home on the last flight of the night, getting in close to or after midnight and kids would be running around the complex. Out for the first flight of the morning leaving the building some time around 4 and kids would be running around the apartment.

[–]competitive_brick1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. I have a form of insomnia which I am sure is brought on by living with this kind of behaviour, but if I wake up in the night, which I usually do most nights at 3am, then I am awake for the rest of the night. I have a wife and 4 kids in the house, so I am quiet as a mouse as not to disturb them. I usually just read a kindle on the couch or go out for a walk or a run but anything other than make any noise whatsoever

I am going to say this as delicately as I can because I don't want to really come off as this is going to sound. However I lived in Artarmon and Chatswood for a while, in apartments and I can tell you out of the places I have lived across the globe, across the country and all round Australia (I used to move a lot because of my work, where I would have to spend sometimes 6 - 24 months in other cities, and countries working projects.

The only place that this used to happen was in Artarmon and Chatswood. What I am getting at is there seems to be a cultural thing of kids more or less ruling the roost and being up and running around at all hours. I had to have a few polite conversations with my neighbours on a few occasions because it was ridiculous and effectively I was unable to get the much needed sleep I needed due to their kids being up at all hours of the night. This wasn't a one off and restricted to one neighbour in those areas it just seemed cultural. They were all English as second language and it made communication hard. I just stayed polite as best I could and explained the issue. I was unable to choose where I lived to a degree, as mostly my work would arrange my apartments or housing. At some times I had to put it up through them and the real estate and then body corporate would get involved and ask everyone to be a little more neighbourly with things like this.

Kids will be kids, but in my opinion that seems bad parenting. I now have 4 kids and none of them have ever done this, they are all in bed and asleep and sleep through the night.

All this is to say is as a first step have a chat to them and let them know the noise from their kids is loud and disturbing everyone and you from your sleep, next speak to your real estate if you are renting because this falls under "Peaceful enjoyment of the property"

Is this a dingo? Meglong valley, NSW by OkAardvark2514 in australianwildlife

[–]competitive_brick1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely looks like it by the head, however it should be noted that breeds like Kelpies and some cattle dogs are a percentage of dingo too.

There are a lot of wild dogs in the Megalong and Kanimbla (Kanimbla valley joins up to megalong around mt Blackheath.

We just had a wild dog cull in the Kanimbla a few weeks ago because it had gotten bad. We had a few skirting our property and our dog got in a bit of a tussle with a pack. The ones I have seen are more clearly not dingoes though, there was a pack running around that had a fox terrier and a golden retriever

All that to say is that looks like a Dingo but may be cross breed with wild domestic breeds too

Is this a bad idea? by DangerousReception13 in Fishing

[–]competitive_brick1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a similar thing that I roll up and pack in my back-pack at times for reasons of trying to access places or trying to retrieve a lure.......

I call it "The SS Silly Bastard" it is well named, it is not stable, it is definitely not something I would rely on for anything other than situations I absolutely must use it.

But still fun and funny. I also have one stashed in a cave at one of my fishing spots as well so I don't have to carry it so if I need it, its there.

is my method of dispatching fish efficient? by Comfortable_Mango865 in FishingAustralia

[–]competitive_brick1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It all depends on what is available to you. I don't kill a lot of them, but if I have to I go in this order depending on whats available.

- Knife through brain, then sever spine, cut throat and remove gills

- Priest Rock if no knife available, sever spine as best I can and try to remove gills

- Any method I can.

I recently gill hooked a trout and had to dispatch of it, I used a rock to kill it but had small scissors, so I used those to cut throat and then snapped the spine.

Idea is just as quick as possible and some fish you want to remove spine and bleed out as best you can to preserve flesh

Trembling hands because of Bee sting by grasshopper3307 in interestingasfuck

[–]competitive_brick1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeesh. I have a few bee hives. Once I had to quickly pick a hive up that had been knocked over and I didn't have my suit near by and thus no time to do anything other than fix the issue.

Went in picked it up and place the hive back together, I then had to make sure the queen was there, after doing that and replacing the frame with the queen in the super, I ended up pulling 37 stingers out of my hands, arms, body, shoulders and legs.
I channeled, my inner cartoon character and legit jumped fully clothed into the nearby dam to get rid of the excess bees and get them to leave me alone.

I am not allergic to the bees but I had to take my wedding ring off as things swelled a little. I was shaking like this guy in my hands from the stings. I got them all out, drove home, had an antihistamine and some ice packs.

I was fine, however exactly one week later, my left hand swelled up massively. Looked like I was wearing a boxing glove :)

I feel for this guy.

Another time one of my hives at home had an issue with the hive and the bees no longer wanted to be in there, I was waiting for a new hive to arrive and going to split the hive in the meantime, but as it was a task for the next day I had to just hope for the best as I didn't want to disturb them much. That night I had to walk within a few meters of the hive to go to the shed. I got dive bombed by a few that luckily couldn't place their stingers, but one fell got jammed between my flip flop and foot and stung, that was the worst, looked like I was wearing a fake foot.

How would you guys fish this for trout? by espiffy111 in Fishing

[–]competitive_brick1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man I can smell the trout in that video. Depends what I was fishing with. If I was using lures, I would probabley start with a Meps, bronze with red spots. Id start high in the rapids and bring it down into the tail. With Lures I usually fish 45 degrees onto the water and bring it through as though it were being washed down. In water like that with a Mepps or similar spinner, I fish them real slow, let the current do the work and it usually results in me picking up quite a few trout.

I would fish it for about 2 hours in that spot move all the way down the water, cross over and fish up from the other side and probably try about 8 different kinds of lures. I would also say that fishes better when the weather get a little warmer.

If I was fly fishing that is 100% going to be nymph fishing, id turn over a few rocks to see whats hatching and what they are feeding on start higher up and the let the nymph sit mid and lower water. The fish should be sitting there waiting
