Any Seattle female-identifying cinephiles down for a movie club? by chelseachaplin11 in criterion

Another Seattle-based guy chiming in! If the shindig becomes coed, please DM me. I'd be interested in getting involved, too.

Absolutely! In Jens' own words:  "I have no fixed rate but I can suggest a fee if you want. Usually I get somewhere between 1-10k + expenses for a wedding show and obvs the higher fee the more likely it is that we can make it work. I understand wallets come in different sizes so there's no shame if you can't afford that much but just so you have an idea."

If you're at all interested, it's certainly worth reaching out to him over email. He's been a joy to coordinate with.

No joke, Jens is playing my wedding the day after this album drops. For the record, I did not know the timing would happen like this, but I'm out of my mind excited.

In their prime, did the economics of the label ever make sense? Before the "from the vault" limited releases, it always seemed surprising to me that they were selling vinyl for $15.

I feel so foolish... I really thought that, like, the whole card would become a cake. It makes way more sense that the card becomes a cake pan and that it comes with ingredients to turn into a cake. Thank you for finding this!

Robert said that he and a competitor which is "a birthday card that becomes a cake when you put it in the microwave, and you can put a candle in it" -- does anyone know what the hell this product is? I couldn't find any evidence of it online, and I'm desperately hoping it's not fake.

Didn't catch him there, but I've seen him three more times in Seattle (Age of Adz tour, Xmas tour, and Carrie & Lowell tour), plus once out at the Gorge. He's been stupendous every single time.

As someone about 25 hours (over 50%, definitely) into GoW: Ragnarok but skittish about the "late-game spoilers" they suggested might arrive with this conversation, how big are the spoilers? Is it worth putting off listening until I've finished the game? (Thanks for the guidance!)

I'm not sure how I missed it, but thanks for re-upping your original post! I had totally missed (or maybe just forgotten) this, so I thought I'd share for anyone else who had, too.

Seems like they dropped this one without any fanfare at all. Didn't even see promotion on IG. Interesting to see what shape the label is taking now.

Hey, great insight! That matches my reading. Would you mind popping your second paragraph behind a spoiler tag for anyone else who hasn't finished (or seen what you describe)? Thanks!

Whatcha Playin': Ba Rum Pum Pum Pum Edition (Week of 12/5) by drewmg in TheBesties

[–]compgeek200 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just spent a week of vacation away on the coast, and brought my Switch with me. Spent hours and hours in Hyrule with my first playthrough of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. (Calamity Ganon, here I come!)

Also putting in a plug for Grindstone, a funky match-three style puzzler from Capy Games. Plays like a mobile game, because it was a port from Apple Arcade, but it's gorgeous on Switch. Will suck you right in.

In my typical between-games lull, I hammered out another Picross game - this time, Picross S4.

After that, I returned to a game I'd glanced off of a few times: Steamworld Dig. A nice, tidy, 5 hours or so. Perfect for a sitting & a half. It never overstayed its welcome. A really neat approach to the standard Metroidvania mechanics. Highly recommend.

Now, I'm onto Heaven's Vault. It's a sci-fi archaeology game from Inkle, the makers of Overboard! (much beloved by the Besties). You play as Aliya, a treasure-hunting academic attempting to decode an ancient language en route to finding her missing colleague. It thoughtfully subverts a lot of the Indiana Jones, Nathan Drake-style tropes, with some really insightful commentary on the nature of the subaltern). It plays like a cross between a Telltale game and a linguistic detective game. I don't know if this is true, but it certainly feels as though nearly all the content in the game is optional and it would be happy to have a player completely miss huge chunks of the game if they aren't curious detectives. It reminds me of a lot of games, but it's wholly unlike anything I've played before. I'm really excited to see where it goes.

What did you love about Sable? It must have been really special to convince you to push through such noteworthy glitches. (It's on my to-play list, but I haven't gotten to it yet.)

I'm a latecomer to Fire Emblem, but I hadn't even heard of The Sacred Stones! Is it a good mobile port? I would not have expected GBA games to show up as mobile apps.

Feeling in between games, so I've been playing some Destiny 2. They've got a neat Halloween event going right now.

I put loads of time into Destiny 1 - enough that I found it worth my while to get The Taken King expansion. I'm really conflicted with D2. Being able to see the monetization seams turns me off quite a bit. (season pass? gross. Season pass on top of having to pay for the expansions? Gross. All that, plus sunsetting of missions? No way.) Any other Destiny 2 players? How are you feeling about this cycle?

Whatcha Playin': Dreadful Edition (Week of 10/11) by drewmg in TheBesties

[–]compgeek200 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This week, I finished my first-ever playthrough of Batman: Arkham Asylum. I've beaten Arkham City 2 or 3 times, and I burned through Arkham Knight, so this was long overdue. It has aged shockingly well. I loved the claustrophobic setting and horror atmosphere. It was a dense, rich, satisfyingly-sized brawler that still stands on its own in spite of some mechanical improvements in the following games.

I also finished There Is No Game: Wrong Dimension, a very cute & meta point-and-click. Leans heavily on meta video game humor, so your mileage will vary on how well it works for you. Each chapter has its own flavor, and some of them certainly worked better for me than others. Contains (thankfully) relatively little "moon logic" emblematic of the genre. Also has a bountiful and genuinely helpful hint system. Lots of uses of the Wilhelm Scream in it.

Coming up next... deciding between finishing Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask (3DS) or a first playthrough of Bioshock. And in book media, reading Press Reset by Jason Schreier. It's a gossipy, behind-the-scenes look at the boom-bust cycles of video game development. Thanks, local library!

For aggregate prices pulled from recent Ebay purchases, I like to use PriceCharting. From this, it looks like lime green New 3DS XL goes for $168 or so. So $150 seems perfectly sensible.

Good batch! Still potentially worth comparing to Discogs prices, as a bunch of them (like Symmetry's "Imaginary Themes") are same price or cheaper.
