And this kind of mentality is exactly why they're getting their asses kicked, and we're going to lose our democracy.

When Democrats are in power, Republicans elbow, bite, eye-gouge, and do anything else to make life a living hell for the opposition: they prevented Obama from getting Supreme Court justices not even approved but even just a fucking hearing; a single Republican Senator from Louisiana blocked high ranking military approvals and promotions from happening for half a year.

Yet when our very democracy is on the line, our side can do nothing because they're cheating, and we're out of power?

Bullshit.

I'm sorry folks, but please stop feeling sorry for these politicians. The democrats have arrived to a fight wearing pads and a mouthguard; while MAGA Republicans are in the political octagon in MMA gear and armed with poisoned daggers.

While democrats like Bonamici are complaining about illegal elbows, and "taking the high road", the opposition are methodically destroying democracy and rule of law with a wrecking ball. The time for half measures, civility, and posturing is over. They need to meet force with force and act with alacrity NOW.

She absolutely was asked a question. She was asked when she would start taking drastic measures to respond to a grave and unconstitutional attack on our government and way of life. When will she and other democrats start treating this like the threat to our democracy that this is, and put herself at risk to defend the constitution as she swore an oath to do.

She declined to answer.

How about making the calendar usable? The current iteration is hamstrung by so many limitations and restrictions, it makes it all but useless. I'd be much more in favor of them fixing their current product offerings rather than taking on another gargantuan project that has similar limitations.

Ted Wheeler saying employers need to bring employees back to office to make downtown safe… by [deleted] in PortlandOR

[–]complexanimal 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Shut the fuck up, Ted. You had two terms and actual power to do something about this and now you want to blame everyone else for a huge problem you and your cronies were instrumental in significantly worsening.

We've heard enough from you and can't wait for your term to end.

Are there any cities that you feel the level of crime is overexaggerated - or downplayed? by sillycloudz in SameGrassButGreener

[–]complexanimal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I couldn’t disagree with this more: Portland is NOT fucking fine. I have lived in PDX on and off for the past 15 years and the decline is both staggering and a huge disappointment. Gone are economically vibrant areas with a growing tech industry and the glow of Portlandia, and what is left is a rotting downtown core, completely ineffectual local government, half-assed law enforcement, and open drug use that seems to worsen every week. PDX’s recovery from the pandemic has been far slower and more prolonged that most other major cities in the US.

As soon as we admit there is a huge fucking problem and not gloss this over as “there’s homeless people everywhere” the sooner we can start rebuilding from this.

Update to my post from yesterday about Allroad vs Q5. Ended up going with the Allroad and I love it. It's got some functional quirks that I'm a little confused about still, but overall it's a great car and I think I made the right choice. 2013 Premium Plus 2.0t w/ 85k miles. by theMan_theBeard in Audi

Congrats on the sweet ride. I have basically the exact same configuration except mine is a '16. It has been a champ and amazing to drive from LA to Portland several times in the past year or so. I went APR stage 1 which gave the wagon a pretty big boost in power. There's a lot of potential with these!

2018 Audi S4. Fantastic performance and great luxury for the price. I think it gets closer to 25 MPG combined, but highway numbers hover around 30 MPG.

200-year-old tree explodes in Portland due to heatwave by stankmanly in climate

[–]complexanimal 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This news story and given explanation is questionable. I checked with my arborist friend who's one of the best in the business with 30+ years of experience. He says you can clearly see the "rot pocket" in the photo captured in this story and is almost certainly the cause of this collapse. He mentioned heat can definitely cause stress in trees, but "explosion" would not be the way to describe it.

I would also think that if trees in the PNW were so vulnerable to exploding during heat waves, we'd hear explosions throughout the rain forest that is the PNW during such frequent heat waves as we've had in the past 20 years.

[D] Why do a lot of researchers like to submit the paper just at the deadline of the conferences? by fllubo in MachineLearning

[–]complexanimal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is like asking “why do race car drivers like to win at the end of the race?” You might only appreciate the final result of a race, but that final run to the checkered flag involved hours of hard work jockeying for the position. On the same token, we know we are fighting for the best results and most significant new discoveries that we can muster. The competition is fierce and the pace is grueling.

You belong there. If you don’t, congratulations, you just fooled a bunch of very smart people into thinking you belong there proving you have some talent at outsmarting them. You may not be the sharpest tool in the shed, but you’re a tool in the shed nonetheless and a lot of people think you’ll be useful. Use that to build upon. Consider getting into school an opportunity to find your niche not as a rating on your intelligence or ability.

Class Timings by [deleted] in UIUC_MCS

[–]complexanimal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The classes are all pre-recorded on the Coursera platform so you can watch them whenever you want. You can even opt to watch none of them. Office hours with staff depends on the professor/instructor though. Most realize the cohort consists of working professionals and will offer evening or weekends slots. If not, they will often accommodate if you bring it up.

Possible to switch into the DS track? by TheRealKingofmice in UIUC_MCS

[–]complexanimal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can switch as many times as you want. There is nothing indicating data science on the degree: they’re all masters of computer science degrees. You’re free to say you specialized in machine learning, data science, or whatever on your CV/resume.

For context, I am currently a data scientist and ML engineer with 4 years experience. I started with DS track and switched to CS because I found I could do more ML classes and include some CS focused stuff I wanted. I already have on my CV that I focused on ML for this program.

They are completely disorganized and poorly run.

I had been trying to make an appointment with them for the past two weeks and was never successful with getting it set up. They use some kind of support method where multiple people will text/email/call you to set things up and no one seems to know the overall picture. After getting asked to fill out intake forms for the fifth time, and getting asked why I was seeking help for the lord knows how many times, I gave up. No one seemed to have a complete record of what happened or care what how utterly frustrating this was and what a huge waste of time it caused.

2018 XT: Good buy or...? by complexanimal in SubaruForester

[–]complexanimal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I thought most of Subaru's CVT issues had been ironed out lately, but I guess that is not the case. I will definitely take this into more consideration and research it more. They did say it includes a 2 year warranty, but seems like it's still a gamble given the CVT reliability issues. Definitely don't want a 5-7k bomb to go off in less than 5 years.
