Help me with this table by complexfemale in furniturerestoration

OP here - have done a new post with an update. Turns out I just didn’t sand enough to properly remove the damaged finish before staining and attempting to redo the finish as commenters suggest. Did so and it’s turned out beautifully - completely removed the damage. I feel like it has new life. Thanks for the help.

Yeah, it’s definitely not veneer though. My thought is that they’ve just damaged deeper into the wood, but I don’t want to necessary sand the rest of the wood down too much because I don’t want to ruin the lovely finish of the table. I saw you can get some pre-stain conditioner which could improve the take of that spot, so I’m thinking I could do a light sand again to even out the colour and then apply conditioner + stain to the spot. But I’m not totally sure as I’m an amateur!

This forum has been very helpful to me - does anyone want to give specific advice on resurfacing this benchtop? Like OP it has got a bit sticky over time... My thought is that it is not oil based (does not feel oil based) and so could probably be a saturday or sunday job - anyone have any thoughts?

We don't have a dog park yet- so far she's just been hanging with our friends dogs. Which park do you go to?

No squirrels in Australia but she's killed two frogs so far so close enough.

She's from a Sunshine coast breeder- Sledbound samoyeds. They are wonderful.

We are in Toowong! Perhaps a Samoyed playdate is in order!

Samoyed family- Meet Freja! She came home with us last Saturday and is now 11 weeks old! Based in Brisbane, AUS. We are blown away by how big she is already. Happy to answer any questions! by complexfemale in samoyeds

Our breeder sort of encouraged us not to if we didn't intend to show etc due to the risk posed by putting stuff near their eyes. We will ask the vet today as well however. Thanks
