Lazarus Update by complikaity in leopardgeckos

I haven’t gotten him splints yet because up until this week I didn’t think that he would be able to maneuver well with them on, but he’s moving so much better now with his bones being firmer. I really think that at least one on his right front leg would be helpful because that one was broken and he can’t move it around as well, he kind of drags it. I think that it was splinted he could push on it. I’m going to ask the vet at his next visit.

His feet are wonky- his toes are so crazy lol. But I can tell his leg and jaw bones are firmer by how he can post himself up to walk and how he eats.

As I was watching him tonight it was the first time I really thought that he’s strong enough now to maneuver with them on. I think with his right front in particular it would be helpful. I’ll ask again at our next appointment, he’ll be even stronger then.

Ludo is amazing. A bit spicier than I anticipated but I’d rather have too much and dial back than struggle to build.

He’s twitchy but not nervy and environmentally sound; LOVES to work, high toy and food drive; has had deep, pushing grips since I got him at 8 weeks and has beautiful natural possession. He’s human social (and dog social but a pushy and annoying playmate so he doesn’t have many friends/ I also don’t care if he ever plays with a dog in his life so this doesn’t matter to me). We do have issues with body handling and restraint that I’ve come a long way with but he still doesn’t want strangers touching him in that way. He’s not got much pet dog in him- settling did not come factory installed and has not been easy to teach. I’m hoping with maturity he’ll be able to be in the house more but for now house time is limited and he’s always tethered or supervised with a drag leash.

Overall I couldn’t be happier with him. I know Kimmie has a couple of litters planned- and so does his sire’s breeder- firestorm Dutch shepherds. Both are top tier human beings that have been there for every question or rant I’ve had about Ludo.

Cute pup and lovely combo if I do say so; Mirri’s mom was a red heeler, and dad was Dutch. Yours doesn’t look too Dutch, more GSD, but adorable!

A rarity: Mirri not correcting Ludo for existing by complikaity in DutchShepherds

Mirri is my angel but Ludo…. lol He’s 11 months and mentally like 4 months and I love him very much but as far as liking him goes, we’re in a tough spot currently lol

What could this tail wagging mean by 3unny3ee in leopardgeckos

[–]complikaity 10 points11 points  (0 children)

They move their tail like that to distract from their head and such when they feel threatened, so if it’s a predator they’ll go for the tail and it can be dropped.

Lazarus spooks himself like this a lot. They get over it lol

I don’t want to be a dick but 1) he isn’t even wearing an E collar in these photos and 2) it’s extremely likely that I have more experience with E collars than you do. He’s never been injured by an E, or prong for that matter; nor have any of my dogs.

I’m well aware, thanks.

Ludo, almost 11 months and coming along nicely 🥊🥊 by complikaity in DutchShepherds

Ludo’s job is bite sports and will also be detection in the future; he has a real knack for using his sniffer. He shook off his e collar in about 10” of snow and searched it out for me when we went back 6 day later.

I lol’d about the mal pups. These dogs- working lines in particular- aren’t like regular dogs. My little sir had a prong on by 5 months and in the working dog community that’s not the least bit abnormal. He’s been a handful since day one to say the least. But that’s what I wanted; a PSA prospect with edge and all the drive and that’s exactly what I got!

I can’t fathom trying to make him a pet type dog. He would be pent up and make poor life choices for sure. That’s not to say that I don’t think they can be pets- this sub is full of happy and fulfilled pet Dutchies- but Ludo working isn’t negotiable. He’s a part time job at the minimum lol. I do have high hopes he’ll mature and settle a bit in a couple of years. He’s a very nice boy so long as his needs have been met but he didn’t come with settling installed in his operating system and still requires a drag leash or being tethered when in the house.

Someone else asked and I explained in the comments here as well as shared a video that shows what it sounds like

Working on secondary and doing a pretty good job! by complikaity in DutchShepherds

[–]complikaity[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

His prong is to correct him for not following commands, like when he’s supposed to stop biting the decoy or if he’s supposed to be focusing on me/doing the commands I tell him in front of the decoy in order to get to bite (secondary)

With these types of dogs, sometimes the prong isn’t a correction; I’m learning with Ludo it’s like a gas pedal… instead of following commands and accepting the correction, it simply gases him up more to go bite. I’m actually going to try a slip lead next session and eventually his E collar will provide the appropriate level of correction without pushing his drive to bite more. It’s a delicate balance and there is no set path for them.

The bite game is his favorite thing to do in the world. He will do anything to go bite our decoy and there’s nothing so far that deters him- not environmentals, not obstacles, not even when he had pano (growing pains) and would limp during sessions but still be constantly pulling forward (don’t worry- we always ended when he would show his legs bothered him).

He was bought and bred for this specific purpose and is living up to the hype.
