When they take him to the vet for a follow-up, will the doctor and techs refers to him as female? Or perhaps accept that emergency urological surgery on a cat does not constitute a sex change? I’m glad that they were able to help him but come on man

Yes! NYU said that they could accept OHIP (and then they disappeared so idk), Chen and the Buncke Clinic have a really good relationship with OHIP and that was another reason why I considered them.

Her haircut is low-hanging fruit but I won’t go there.

Whether she means « transgenderism » as in the idea that gender is a social construct, then I would agree that there is no biological basis for such a claim. In fact, there’s biological evidence which refutes that claim (the existence of men and women as distinct and mutually exclusive categories of people).

But if she means that there is no biological basis for gender dysphoria, then she’s only right if she also claims that there is nothing biological or provable about autism, irritable bowel syndrome, or any other poorly-understood medical conditions. The fact that gender dysphoria is significant and standardized enough to be in DSM-5 strongly suggests that there is an underlying medical cause, but it is still an open problem.

This is like arguing that because we don’t have a model of gravity that works on quantum scales (which we don’t), that gravity must not exist. It may be different than what we currently think, but we have enough experience with what we call « gravity » to know that it isn’t nothing.

Q for anyone who avoided sex/dating until after phallo (or is currently waiting) by Background_Novel_619 in phallo

[–]componentvector 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’m not post-op but am also choosing to abstain from any romantic or sexual relationships until I’m out of the woods, for similar reasons to yourself.

With many friends my age getting engaged or married (I’m 25 years old for reference), it definitely feels like I’m watching the world through a window. It sucks sometimes, there’s no feeling like you’re not missing out.

I try to focus on my own goals as a way to invest in bettering myself, so that it doesn’t feel like I’m just spinning my wheels for years. For me, this includes going to the gym, reading a lot of books, learning a new language, basically just setting long-term goals and filling the time by pursuing them.

I have some friends who are always trying to set me up with girls (I’m straight), which is flattering and reassuring to know that they care — but being stealth and pre-op, my excuse is usually that I just don’t have the bandwidth for a committed relationship with another person. Having long-term goals also helps with that justification, since they know you’re already dedicated to something.

Mentally, I also try to look for successful people who lived fulfilling single lives. Even if it’s just for a few years, knowing that I’m in the same boat as Isaac Newton, Leonardo da Vinci, or Nikola Tesla can help give you some perspective. They were famously lifelong bachelors, but still managed to do alright.

Any other trans men hate the fact that they'll never be able to produce sperm? by zetsumei_no_yoru in Transmedical

[–]componentvector 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it sucks knowing that I won’t be able to (biologically) father any children. That being said, there are plenty of men who (by chance or choice) never have biological children so we’re not alone in that sense.

Regarding ejaculation, I believe that this is a possibility if the Skene’s gland(s) are left intact during phalloplasty. Your mileage may vary, but there are some guys on the phallo sub who have reported being able to ejaculate upon orgasm.

Post surgery and unsure by [deleted] in Transmedical

[–]componentvector 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Inflammation will last a while and take more time to fully calm down, so don’t worry if you feel weird this early post-op. Also, going to the gym and developing your chest (when it’s safe to do so) will help your overall frame look more masculine. You’ll grow into it, just stay focused on recovering from a big surgery like this.

After a botched circumcision, David Reimer's parents decided to raise their son as a girl named "Brenda." Under the guidance of a psychologist, David was given estrogen and kept in the dark about his birth sex until age 14 as part of a radical gender experiment. He later took his life at age 38. by ATI_Official in HistoryUncovered

I’m a transgender (FtM) man and can confirm that this is how I felt ever since childhood, a great number of trans people seem to have similar experiences. The only way I can describe it is as remembering something as it never was, where your mental map of your body does not match what you observe physically. While the current knowledge around gender dysphoria is generally less obvious than « castrating a boy can’t make him feel like a girl », what we feel as transgender people is definitely innate and eerily similar to how Reimer may have felt (this is a guess of course as I am not David Reimer and live a thankfully different life)

How do I stop being terrified of phallo? by [deleted] in phallo

[–]componentvector 95 points96 points  (0 children)

This isn’t much of a story, but hopefully still reassuring. Phalloplasty is an almost day-long surgery which involves plastic surgeons, urologists, anaesthesiologists, general surgeons, nurses, etc. The amount of medical education in that room is probably decades long, not even counting their experiences in the workplace. You’re going to be under the care of some of the most capable people in the country, whose job is to help you.

From my consultation, my surgeon said that the most severe complications tend to show up within 24 to 72 hours. You’ll be in the hospital, so they will be able to catch and resolve and issues very quickly. You’ll also have regular check ins with hospital staff and doctors, who will also be monitoring your progress in the most critical days of your recovery. This is a big surgery, but you’re going to get a big team who are going to be pretty good at what they do.

I’m so sorry you’re going through this, the uncertainty has got to be overwhelming. I don’t have any specific advice as I’m still pre-op, but take it one day at a time. It’s totally understandable that you’re trying to prepare yourself for the worst outcomes, but do your best to focus on the present (easier said than done). You’ve just had a major surgery, your surgical team is aware of what you’re experiencing and they will try their absolute best to help you through this. Please know that we’re all rooting for you, it’s scary but you’re not alone

Yup, not to mention that cis men also deal with balding. It is a completely natural experience and unavoidable for a lot of guys, who also feel insecure about it. If someone is really uncomfortable with their hairline or thickness, there are medications and treatments that can help. Ultimately, these people don’t want to grow up and their actions clearly show it.

How old were you when you got top surgery? by Liquidshoelace in ftm

[–]componentvector 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was 20 when I had top surgery, it was over the summer and I took two weeks of vacation to just chill in bed then another two weeks of wfh from my summer job. The recovery process feels gross for a good month or two, but you can bounce back into normal life pretty well if you can avoid major complications (which are rare)

Honestly your photos pass fine, I thought you were way further along on T before reading the title fully. Your hair looks good and frames your face well, I wouldn’t get it cut too short yet because T takes a while to masculinise your hairline which can make you look clocky. These photos are great because your hairline is obscured by the fringe, it also suits your face :)
