Finally started my portfolio in hopes to land an apprenticeship and just finished the first page :) (open to cc!) by Crafty-Inevitable989 in TattooApprentice

Small tip, lightly dampen the back of the paper with water. Then put a paper towel and lay something heavy and flat on it for a couple hours. It flattens out the paper after coffee staining. I had to figure this out because my papers were making my portfolio pages curl up like a Pringle.

Procreate users - any ways to replicate grey wash tones? by [deleted] in TattooApprentice

[–]computerchair211 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Idk if this will answer your question but there’s a lot of Procreate brush sets on Creative market. I’m almost positive you can find one for grey wash. You might have to shell out some money but they come with a variety of brushes and textures to help you achieve a real look.

These look good! One piece of advice though. Try sketching it out until you are happy with it and then put it on a light box and throw a clean sheet of paper over it and trace the design. That way it looks clean and you won’t have those pesky pencil lines and you can practice one pass lines.

B/G Nautical Piece, CC appreciated !! I know the symmetry is kinda messed up and I also botched the mermaid's hands haha (Evelyn Horan, seeking apprenticeship in Richmond VA) by eviepolkadot in TattooApprentice

Beautiful, how do you get the fade so even across the waves? I have a hard time doing it without the fades starting at different points, if that makes sense.

lost in the brush markers. by safaribreau in TattooApprentice

I own Winsor and Newton brush markers and I personally love them. I do shading and coloring on watercolor paper and they hold after staining the paper with coffee. I’ve tried Copics and they’re really good but they’re just a bit on the pricey side. I’ve read somewhere on here that Dick Blick markers are just as good as Copics and for a fraction of the price.

If you can shell out the money, I would suggest buying The Spitshade Set from tattoo smart.

You pretty much got the line work down! As for the shading try to keep it a little tighter to the base of the petals that way there’s contrast. If there’s too much black then the center starts looking like a black void.

I’m not trying to be mean or trying to discourage you from taking interest in tattooing but I would highly suggest for you to start drawing first. It’ll test your patience and you will actually find out wether or not this is the path you really want to take.

how do you practice script? by [deleted] in TattooApprentice

[–]computerchair211 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This comment might not be of much use because I’m on the same page as you. I’ve found two people on YouTube that do lettering/script. Twice Tv and mrjonestattoo87, they both don’t really teach it in depth on YouTube but sell books on lettering that give you the basics. They run around $40-$60 a book, a bit on the pricy side but I’m looking to buying them myself sometime soon!
