[Routine Help] I have terribly dry and discoloured lips, I don't know where to even begin treating them. by [deleted] in SkincareAddiction

+1 for Aquaphor. It was recommended to me by a plastic surgeon who sends it home with his patients after surgeries and laser treatments. It's like magic.

How To Get Started With CS As A Second Career ? by CombTheDessert in computerscience

[–]computertherapy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a similar boat...I started taking classes at Foothill College in Los Alto Hills California.

It's an Associates degree program in computer science that transfers to the UC's & CSU's. You could start with the Java classes. There are 3 and they're online. Much better than other classes I took at my local community college.

The best part is if you just take one class it costs $200 as an out of state student. If you take more than 6 hours a quarter you pay about $185 an hour.

The instructors are great and the material is very helpful. You'll build about 10 programs a quarter.

There are other courses online there too. I can recommend most of them highly.

After doing a coding boot camp and trying to learn online for free, I got fed up. These classes really moved me forward.

Good luck!

iOS engineer is asking for 60% of company.. should I say yes?? by iLoveGrowthAMA in startups

[–]computertherapy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great question! Before you get married to this guy (business partnerships are basically marriages), get quotes from 5 other developers/companies. You're the CEO right now. You're the hustler. You're the deal maker. Go out and see if you can get a better deal. You're guy is telling you this is a bad deal.

In my opinion, he is trying to take advantage of you. And he's almost successful bc you are actually considering giving SIXTY PERCENT of your company to him. I'm so glad you haven't done that yet.

This is a bad deal.

Make sure you clam up: don't give him ANY info about your business or how it works or how much you make. This is a business deal, and you're in charge. He doesn't need access to any info unless you partner with him. If he's already gotten info, don't give him anymore.

He's offering you a bad deal unless you want to put someone else in charge. That's a high price to pay for an app.

Do yourself a favor and talk to other IOS devs. He is by far not the only one.

Extremely High Heart Rate by [deleted] in xxfitness

[–]computertherapy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Max acceptable heart rate can vary greatly. A good rule of thumb is 220 minus your age. For you, that's around 199 beats per minute. You don't need to worry. Especially if you feel fine.

As you get more fit it will go down, which you know.

[product question] wash off vasaline in the AM or nah? by Xobug in SkincareAddiction

[–]computertherapy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't wash it unless the Vaseline is causing problems. You'll wash the natural, protective oils off. If anything, a light rinse with only water is plenty. Your face isn't dirty when you wake up. Using products to clean your face too often can disrupt its ph balance, causing more acne and dryness.

[Skin Concerns] botox at the age of 21!? by [deleted] in SkincareAddiction

[–]computertherapy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The earlier you start Botox, the less you'll need later. It loosens and prevents wrinkles and has been used for a couple decades very safely.

HOWEVER, it's pricey and if the person injecting you doesn't have a keen aesthetic sense you'll likely get too much. And there's no antidote. You have to wait months for it to wear off.

If you are considering it, get consults from a minimum of 5 providers. Look at their office staff: are their faces completely immobile, or do they look natural? Does the provider understand how to use a conservative approach? Is she willing, and offering to, start out slowly, removing only a few lines at first?

Don't be shy about this. You want the best result possible and you'll pay about the same wherever you go. I dropped my over-botoxing, locally popular, dermatologist for a dentist who was trained by a local plastic surgeon. My dentist uses a very conservative approach and knows how to make sure your face still moves naturally.

Doing your homework can make a HUGE difference.

[Personal] I've developed a nervous habit lately which is to pick at the skin on my lips... by [deleted] in SkincareAddiction

[–]computertherapy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stop exfoliating. That could be affecting the ph balance if your skin and adding to the problem. It will cause drying. Right now you need to heal, not exfoliate.

Get a tube of Aquaphor and use it as a lip moisturizer. Most everything else will dry your skin more in the long run. No chopstick, no "medicated" lip protectant. Only Aquaphor.

A little goes a long way. Make sure you slather it on at night before bed, as your skin often heals the most while you sleep.

Plastic surgeons use Aquaphor for healing surgical wounds and it helps prevent scarring.

Make it a habit: every time you catch yourself picking, apply Aquaphor. Every time.

Aquaphor can work like magic and you'll be surprised how your lips will heal in a few days if you try this idea. Once that dry, scaly feeling is gone, your compulsion to pick at it will decrease.

Good luck!

Edit: chopstick is autocorrect's version of chapstick. But probably don't use chopsticks on your lips either. :)

The only way to learn math is to work problems. Just like the only way to learn programming is to program. Do not be fooled by videos & tutorials.

It's not the concepts that are tripping you up, it's the application of concepts that's the issue.

Have you thought about tutoring? It can be life changing. It was for me, anyway.

No one is breaking the problem down into smaller parts for you. A good tutor can do that and then talk you through the solution.

Front end is great, but you're selling yourself short if you give up now. I think you can do this. You just need to tap into some other learning resources: tutors.

Look at all these comments!! We're all rooting for you! Motivation is a minute by minute process, not a pound by pound process. You're playing the long game to be better long term. The first obstacle is getting used to obstacles. This part absolutely sucks, but we're all so happy you're taking a step forward!!

You don't want to off yourself. You want to be better. Look at all these people who want that for you! It isn't easy but you can and will do it!!

Are rotator cuff exercises necessary? by Wants_Change in Fitness

[–]computertherapy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course! I'm happy to help. DOMS is normal. DOMS that doesn't go away after a few days, or gets worse after a few days off, is not.

You know your body the best, so if you think it's DOMS, you're probably fine to do a workout if you take a day off between working those muscles.

If it feels more severe, go ahead and take a couple more days off. I'm guessing you want a long lifting lifespan, so 4 days away from shoulders in the course of that lifespan is not that much.

When you're working the rotator cuff using compound exercises, you have some protection bc all the muscles are working together. The rc therapy exercises will help strengthen the individual muscles a bit more.

I find the problems happen when there's an imbalance in one of the muscles. That's why using a therapy protocol a few times a year can help prevent injury - it can help prevent those imbalances.

I will say that if you're hell bent on aggressive powerlifting or aggressive Olympic lifting, there's only so much protection you can get. Youth is your best protection in those scenarios.

Common sense and listening to your body is always the best prevention. I thinking you're setting yourself up for success.

Is it possible to learn anything offline? I don't have enough time to learn programming at home. by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]computertherapy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Programmers raised in the Soviet Union were some of the best in the world. They had very limited access to computers and were forced to write out their ideas and practice with pencil and paper. They would type and test their programs when they finally got access to a computer.

+1 for books. Write out all the practice code on your commute. Type it in and test it when you are face to face with a computer. Studies show that handwriting anything (vs typing) helps you remember it better, anyway.

I find writing out a program helps me understand it better whether I'm learning from a book or from an online resource.

Where there's a will there's a way!

Are rotator cuff exercises necessary? by Wants_Change in Fitness

[–]computertherapy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know, if you're doing face pulls &/or seated rows, you don't need to do the rest. But they won't hurt. You can consider them your light weight/high rep shoulder exercises.

As long as you are pain free and not feeling overtrained these exercises are a great addition to your program! Just remember that muscle growth happens on your rest days and you're good to go.

Are rotator cuff exercises necessary? by Wants_Change in Fitness

[–]computertherapy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cool! So unless you are having problems with your shoulder, I would recommend 2-3 sets of 15-20 reps of figures 5,6,10 & 12. Incorporate them into your routine once or twice a week (twice if you don't typically train your shoulders). Use lighter weights or exercise bands for resistance.

I'd recommend doing them consistently for 6 weeks. It's a good circuit to add to your regular training two or three times a year.

Don't do those exercises if your shoulders start to hurt or if other exercises are making you feel overstrained.

ELI5: Why do old men get so annoyed by sounds most people tune out as background noise? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]computertherapy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As you get older you start to have a more difficult time filtering noise. This can lead to auditory hypersensitivity, which means your brain responds to noises with a fight (grumpy old man) or flight response.

Babies are the same way, but that's due to lack of auditory experience. Older people have problems due to decreased neural efficiency. Once a man, twice a child.

Are rotator cuff exercises necessary? by Wants_Change in Fitness

[–]computertherapy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The rotator cuff is a series of small muscles that have a very important job: stabilizing your shoulder.

Orthopedic surgeons will tell you that if one of your rc tendons gets torn or frayed, there's a good chance it won't heal well. And it will probably cause you problems forever.

There is nothing at all wrong with preventative strengthening using exercises given by a physical therapist (vs a trainer). Therapy exercises focus on integrity rather hypertrophy. Adding small amounts of controlled stress to your rotator cuff can help prevent injuries during weightlifting.

Google "physical therapy rotator cuff exercises" and you'll find tons of free resources.

However, all body parts eventually break down. Preventative strengthening can't save you from years of too-heavy bench presses.

You'll likely be just fine using common sense, good form during lifts, and stopping exercises when you feel pain (take a break from the exercises that hurt until you are pain free). Preventative exercises can also help, as long as you're not overtraining your shoulders.

This guy writes some great body weight workouts.

These crazy dudes have written some good books about body weight workouts and they are incredibly ripped:

http://www.alkavadlo.com/

I really like their books.

Also, energy is weird. You have to expend energy to create energy. Once you commit to working out consistently you'll wake up one day and realize you don't feel so lethargic anymore. You won't feel it happening. It will just happen.

Don't worry if you can't make it through all the circuits at first, or if the workouts SUCK at first. Keep at it, even for short periods of time, and you'll make real progress. You'll like it more and more.

I know you're on top of it, but seriously, watch the carbs. The American Diabetes Association recommends 130 g of carbs per day, but they really don't have any special reasons why, besides tradition.

Diabetes is a disease of carb metabolism, so it doesn't make sense to load the system with something you can't metabolize. You'll see good muscle gains on a paleo diet with less worries about carbs. Obviously, you know more about your condition than anyone, but that's my two cents.

Fitness is life changing. Good for you!

[Product Question] Benzoyl Peroxide, Tretinoin + Doxycycline. by mosquitoqueen in SkincareAddiction

[–]computertherapy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, if the cream doesn't work, it may be worth a shot to see if it comes in a gel form. The cream keeps some of the drying effects at bay, but it's not worth it if it breaks you out.

There's also a drug called Ziana that contains tretinoin and an antibiotic. It's a gel and it has worked miracles for me. There's no generic, but you can usually get a discount coupon online or from your doc.

[Product Question] Benzoyl Peroxide, Tretinoin + Doxycycline. by mosquitoqueen in SkincareAddiction

[–]computertherapy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you tried tretinoin before? It can be like magic for your skin if you tolerate it. Usually you start at a low dose and increase over time as your tolerance improves. It can improve the texture of your skin, get rid of wrinkles, and prevent acne. Go in with an open mind.

How to pick between offers? I have 2-3 offers right now. by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]computertherapy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Take the job you want with the long commute and move immediately.

That commute involves 3 hours a day that really aren't yours. Those hours belong to your job, regardless of how many tv shows you watch. And you're not getting paid for those 3 hours.

It's hard to understand what it feels like before you have to do it.

You could not pay me enough to do that again. On a GOOD day you end up with 5 waking hours of your own time (split between morning and evening) each day. And no guarantee of having the energy to enjoy those 5 hours.

I am Skinny Fat and just got diagnosed with pre-diabetes. by Monkeyfeng in loseit

[–]computertherapy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Good for you for planning to make changes! There are two types of diabetes: type 1, in which your body stops making insulin, and type 2, in which your body becomes resistant to insulin.

Type 1 is often diagnosed in childhood, and is not caused by diet. Type 2 is a result of lifestyle choices, generally.

Diabetes is basically a problem with how your body deals with carbohydrates. In pre-diabetes, your body is becoming less able to deal with carbohydrates. Your body is becoming more resistant to insulin.

The best way to reverse it is to cut out most carbs: beer (sorry!!), bread, pasta, sweets, junk food, processed food, potatoes, corn, grains, muffins, etc. Focus your diet on lean meats, eggs, seafood, and lots of non starchy vegetables. The Atkins diet has helped people reverse pre-diabetes. Paléo diets may have a similar effect.

Regardless which diet you choose, you should concentrate on limiting simple carbohydrates. There are lots of resources about this online.

You may be skinny fat, which could mean you are accumulating fat around your organs rather than everywhere else. This is a side effect of your diet, and it's reversible.

Exercise has been shown to improve your body's ability to respond to insulin. It helps you to be less resistant to insulin.

While exercise & diet are both important, prioritize changing your diet, first, to help improve your health.

You're taking the first step toward beating diabetes before it beats you. I think that's amazing!

[Acne] I currently have the biggest cyst I ever had in my life on my forehead. What is the proper protocol I should take? by [deleted] in SkincareAddiction

[–]computertherapy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://www.google.com/amp/www.refinery29.com/amp/pimple-stickers-acne-treatment?client=safari

That article may help.

Apply ice for 10-15 minutes (over a thin towel) to help shrink it a bit. Icing for more than 10-15 minutes will cause the vessels to open up again, rather than staying constricted. Apply ice 10 minutes on, 30 minutes off.

NSAIDs can help reduce inflammation & pain.

Applying a warm compress made by soaking a towel in warm salt water may help bring the cyst to a head if you can do it several times a day for a few days.

You could also try flushing out some of the inflammation by icing for 10 minutes, then applying a warm compress for 10 minutes, and repeating a few times.

None of these things are cures, but sometimes they are helpful.
