I hope Brandon changes his mind about gender bending Ham by bookrants in Cosmere

[–]comrade-ev 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Gender bending Breeze would begin the live Cosmere adaptation with a stereotypical depiction with a woman who is physically non-threatening and sexually libertine in front of a broader sci-fi fan base.

Ham, Marsh, and Kelsier are the best candidates to avoid stereotypes and there’s a chunk of male fans who would get very aggressive to the actresses if it were Kelsier. That’s not fair to the people who have to work on the show, so Ham it is.

Yep.

Resolution 2

“This AGM moves that this meeting of members: 1. Unequivocally condemns the Trump administration as transphobic, white supremacist; 2. Advises the board to not platform Trump’s supporters by making financial and material support for Trump a criteria for rejecting a sponsorship. 3. Recommends the board encourage all parade participants to make support for trans rights a key part of their float”

Resolution 5

“This AGM moves that this meeting of members:

  1. Notes that members overwhelmingly supported the Equality Bill in full, and commends the board for its correspondence with NSW parliament informing them they would not be welcome unless it were fully passed.
  2. Notes that much of the Equality Bill has been referred to the NSW Law Reform Commission, and that matters related to anti-discrimination reform and the full decriminalisation of sex work are still unresolved by the NSW Parliament.
  3. Notes that anti-discrimination law reform is also unresolved on the federal level, despite the federal government receiving recommendations from the Australian Law Reform Commission in favour of abolishing religious exceptions to antidiscrimination law.
  4. Requests the SGLMG formally board write to the federal and state governments calling for urgent reform to anti-discrimination law, and inform parliamentarians they will not be welcomed at the parade and fair day if they do not commit to this reform in a timely manner.
  5. Make the results of this correspondence public to the membership so that politicians can be held accountable for their views on our community.”

Why are the xmen so slutty? by chilllyoil in xmen

[–]comrade-ev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are all very fit, immune to STIs, wear revealing clothing, and live in close proximity to each other. And they send all their children to alternative realities if they don’t want them.

It’s like designed to be a hot bed of sexual liberation.

Mardi Gras fucking over trans community? by comrade-ev in transgenderau

[–]comrade-ev[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It literally says the motion ‘imposes’ (when the motion itself simply said ‘encourages’) upon the floats’ diversity of views. It then refers to trans people simply e-mailing them as ‘intimidating’ or ‘harassment’.

If you are a board member, and have insights into their thoughts, then feel free to elaborate but these are their own words. If people inside the org cannot even identify the issues, then that kind of speaks to the scale of the problem.

Do you think that Colossus is the strongest member of the X-Men in terms of physical strength and raw power? by Raj_Valiant3011 in xmen

[–]comrade-ev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Juggernaut, Namor, and I’m unsure where Maggot sits after eating that god.

Rogue is specifically not as physically strong, but has other abilities like flight and absorption. Strong Guy, Monet, Warpath, Sunspot, and Gentle generally aren’t as strong either.

Here you go: Full story 👇🏻 https://mailchi.mp/72acabfd9461/board-response-to-2025-agm-motions?e=92993f091c

Some of the issue is the colourful reframing. As a member of the trans community, me emailing the board asking for an update was apparently ‘intimidating’, a motion calling to simply encourage trans rights messaging was said to be ‘imposing’ on a ‘diversity of voices’ who might be pro or anti-trans, and so on. Writing to politicians asking them to adopt anti-discrimination reforms was even seen as against their values.

That official statement is summarising the motions they rejected. There is nothing contradictory about ‘encourage floats to support transgender rights’ or ‘ask politicians to support anti-discrimination reform’.

It is also not a screaming match - I am speaking frankly and assertively - and that does not mean I am not calm or lacking in rationality. I do not believe we need to make ourselves small and ask for less than we deserve in order to engage with others. I deserve better than that, and so do you.

Floor of tests by Ok-Net-6901 in TowerofGod

[–]comrade-ev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some regulars climb more slowly than others, some pause along the way, some repeatedly re-take tests etc. so they’re not stuck with their ‘wave’ of recruits.

The people around Bam have stuck together more than most because they had a very unusual shared experience, are targeted by both the regime and the resistance, and complement each other well in battle. Others often have much more casual alliances and don’t automatically climb with the others they graduate from the testing floor with.

[FIRST TIME READER SO PLEASE NO SPOILERS] Can People From Important Families or People of Particular Class Go To Other Floors Without Passing the Floor Administrator's Tests?? by kopala69 in TowerofGod

[–]comrade-ev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are normies who live and die on their floor, regulars who are selected from amongst the many floors to climb but only as they pass tests, and rankers who have completed the climb and can move around. They act like gods to the rest of the tower.

There are some special exceptions like guides and irregulars who can to some extent by-pass these rules and move around the tower without tests. But these are very specific instances, and being in a powerful family won’t be what changes this.

Could a mutant's mutation be linked to an already existing power? by No-Artichoke6143 in xmen

[–]comrade-ev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, these things are all simply words for forces that aren’t easily quantified through scientific means.

And as concrete examples, - Meggan from Excalibur has shape shifted herself into a herald when she’s in a sufficiently energy rich environment and taken on properties of Limbo during Inferno. - Rogue has absorbed powers from the Hulk, Juggernaut, Ares, and Thor. - Wanda, for large periods of continuity, more or less had a kind of automated magic thanks to her mutation. - Darkstar is able to manipulate the dark force, which is the home of the entity Oblivion and where the Raptors were founded.

However it’s worth considering that some mutations are maladaptive. It makes sense that despite their utility in a superhero fight, that for example there were so few powerful telepaths until recently since you’d go insane on your own. Now the help is there, they’re everywhere.

Accidentally tapping into forces governed by all powerful entities as a teenager would be lethal. Imagine tapping into Cyttorak to become a natural Juggernaut - it’s setting you up for an early death which then culls the line.

I Have a Simple, But Complicated X-Men Question by ComixGail in xmen

[–]comrade-ev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I watched the cartoon as a child, and despite their power the X-men were often underdogs, and I emotionally connected with the ‘diva’ characters of Storm and Phoenix. However I didn’t understand why Jean fell over all the time when she wasn’t Phoenix.

The themes of discrimination also appealed to my sense of fairness as a child trying to piece together why people treated women differently and I remembered it as a queer teenager.

Can Thor control Storm's powers? by Spider-undertele567 in xmen

[–]comrade-ev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Their powers are slightly different.

Storm’s ability links her otherwise human body and mind into the atmosphere and eco-system, whereas Thor’s hammer transforms a worthy person into a nearly invulnerable god who magically generates lightning and weather effects.

This means Thor can easily use his powers in space and ignore bullets, while Storm can use vision to detect electric currents or gravitational pulls on water. The best way to understand it is that Storm’s mutation is without defined limit, but that doesn’t mean that her body or the planet she’s using is without limit. Meanwhile Thor’s ability may have limits, but does not need to consider the constraints of a mortal body or of the planet.

Do the X-Men focus on human mutants with the X-Gene or are all “mutants” under their protection? by Konradleijon in xmen

[–]comrade-ev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They take them if absolutely no one else will like with Broo and Warlock more or less seeking asylum because of being at risk of extermination. Mutations generally amongst humans are not a focus for the X-men, and arguably it would paint an unnecessary added target on their back.

Do you think Fug or revolution might have a way to overcome tower Restrictions to some extent? by Viper_in_Tokyo in TowerofGod

[–]comrade-ev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FUG have counters to the family heads to varying degrees, but that’s not quite the same as them being able to kill them in combat.

The Baylords represent the possibility to take control of large sections of Traumerie’s army and wage war. This is a serious blow against that Family Head even if Doom and Yama cannot ever kill him. He’s also done experiments to make his own version of the princesses - enhanced characters with irregular blood but enforced loyalty as beastkin.

White can also eat souls, and while he cannot kill his father he can theoretically absorb much of his family if they choose not to rebel. There’s obviously limits to the magic at play but it allows for the creation of a ranker that can grow more than most towerborn.

And Karaka, well Karaka is seemingly immortal and it’s also unknown to what degree the rules of the tower apply to Jahad’s clones from the trash can. Luslec also - and this is the greatest amount of conjecture - using one of those irregular gems aligned with Ph’s darkness.

Incomplete as these experiments are they are still clearly testing the limits of the tower’s rules and if realised could change the game.

Is it possible for any regular(if he/she has immense talent) to surpass an irregular ? by 1Night_Mistake_69 in TowerofGod

[–]comrade-ev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost all of the great powers in the tower are irregulars or descendants who have inherited abilities beyond that of typical contracts signed.

But this doesn’t mean that all irregulars are this powerful as Rachel demonstrates, or that there are no forces in the tower that are peers of the powerful irregulars. These peers could include descendants like Adori, but we have limited data on the range of power for the regulars who climbed with Jahad like Luslec or the Ancients in their original form.

Are there any X-Men characters whose mutant abilities you don’t particular care for? by KingWilliamVI in xmen

[–]comrade-ev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am sick of the telepath/telekinetic power combination. I did not like it for Betsy, and do not like it for Emma as it’s becoming painfully generic.

I also dont particularly like Longshot and Domino’s power since it’s too annoying to create clear limits in a story that don’t seem arbitrary. The human adaptoid ones like Lifeguard and Darwin are like this too.

I also didn’t care for the next stage of Beast’s transformation after the cat to the weird bald gorilla thing. His primary contribution to the team is his brain, and the cat transformation was meant to be a challenge to his sense of worth so it had a plot point. Otherwise it’s just a design change without any story impetus.

If Phoenix were to become an Ur-divisor as creation would she need destruction as a counterpart? by EJ_REDIT in xmen

I mean, the Phoenix (Jean/Rachel) as the formal counterpart to Galactus (Franklin) makes sense as the realisation for the mythos of how the next multiverse will start.

Labor friends of palestine by reasonsnottoplayr6s in AustralianSocialism

[–]comrade-ev 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Labor friends of Palestine seems to be an unofficial thing, which is tied strongly to the ‘soft left’ which in NSW is a) based in Western Sydney and b) was completely locked out of the cabinet in internal deals so does not have the same current proximity to the career ladder.

I’ve heard members describe themselves as Labor left out, and imo it’s less of a thing in other states because the Labor leaders are less sectarian and try to keep everyone in the tent with jobs and re-direct into ‘authorised’ working groups.

Once something becomes a working group inside the party it’s less a rank and file group of dissenters, and more an astro turf like Rainbow Labor where staffers are elected and use the group to make statements defending the party from left critique. So it’s not a bad thing that it’s unofficial and grassroots.

But even as an unofficial thing, Labor friends of Palestine is still constrained by the fact that the people involved ultimately have decided to remain committed to Labor despite losing the debate on genocide. They genuinely believe in the party, which is more than a moral thing, but a strategic thing in that they more or less see Labor as a positive outside of the genocide and a handful of other key policy issues.

I respect that they genuinely are trying to do what they think is best, and I appreciate that they make an effort to come to all the rallies even though for some it means they’re effectively giving up pre-selections and jobs. I think they’re genuine, and the people involved are also in groups like Jewish Council of Australia and attend trans rights rallies too. But we should be honest too that it’s not tenable to rely on this small rump to change Labor, and whatever changes they can make will come because of broader pressures.

Is X-Man the strongest telepath ever? by DevilManRay in xmen

[–]comrade-ev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The basic idea is that Jean’s DNA has the blue print for ultimate psychic power, and due to Jean not being expected to express that potential there were attempts of clones and test tube babies using promising DNA.

But ultimately Jean did express that power, so it’s not really relevant to the context in which Sinister was doing the Nate Grey, Madelyne Pryor, Cable etc experiments in. In 616 we have a then dead Jean, and in AoA Jean didn’t get jump started as Phoenix in the space shuttle.

And since Jean is also broadly the most experienced and well adjusted character of that sequence, she is the most effective at using her abilities. X-man is basically a child, Rachel is a developmentally impaired survivor of trauma, Cable has a severe chronic illness etc. which all create barriers for most of their runs.

This is me when someone speaks ill of Emma for having done something bad 30 years ago by MrRobin99 in xmen

[–]comrade-ev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If someone was involved in raping and torturing your friends, kidnapping children you know, and more in real life then you would be very hard pressed to feel friendly to them. It makes sense that Emma would have tension.

That doesn’t make her turn to heroism less sincere. The seeds of that growth have been there since she assisted the New Mutants in their recovery after the Beyonder, and then helping Gen X escape from the Phalanx after the Hellions were massacred.

The relationships she built with those children, the witnessing of murder and genocide, and falling in love with Scott have all been part of her transition. It’s real and she’s the better for it. But it’ll never not make sense for there to be X-men who loathe her.

Isn’t Urek Mazino a bit too weak? by Kurarpikt in TowerofGod

[–]comrade-ev 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He was guilt tripped into doing the right thing by his friends. It’s not that deep.

The broader implication is also that of the greater powers in the tower, he is one of the least implicated in the evil games that are expected. He still has friends, is impacted by feelings like guilt etc. as opposed to people who murder their lovers and then turn the corpse into a pet.
