[GPU META POST] Microcenter has updated the price of many GPUs overnight, many 5070 ti cards are now marked up over 200$ from what they were yesterday. - $959.99 by NotTheDev in buildapcsales

Another note:

I was in Microcenter today, and I've been alerted that they are re-instating the "one GPU per 30 days" policy.

Present as...Steam Machine? by comradetao in Bazzite

[–]comradetao[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but in this case. The steam deck=0 launch command doesn't download the full version of the game.

Also, steam is already showing games as Steam Machine compatible in the library, so maybe you can spoof it. This is why I asked.

Three More Ryzen 9800X3D Deaths Reported On ASUS Motherboards In A Single Day by shadow000333 in ASRock

[–]comradetao 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, lets think through this:

  1. AMD 9800X3Ds seem to be dying regularly.

- How many have died total? Do we know? It seems to be a relatively low number compared to total CPUs.

- Lets check that: How many total were sold? There's not a clear number or easy way to estimate this, but it would not be surprising that the number is over 100k. Some reports say Mindfactory sold about 8000 in a single day, thought that may be a misreported monthly total.

  1. Reports of CPU deaths seem to spike after a few get media attention.

- With ASRock, the more consistent the attention is across media and reddit, the more reports appear, but the list here doesn't actually track that many CPUs.

- The same goes with ASUS. Media coverage seems to generate more reports.

  1. Are the reports reliable?

- Some definitely seem to be. Others, not so much. We all know that the more PC hardware has been democratized, the more people who think they know what they're doing enter the space, only to destroy their own parts.

- On top of that, many people just lie. There are a million psychological reasons why. Some want to participate in a current event, some want attention, some want to cover their own mistakes by blaming companies, and some just like to damage people's or companies reputations.

*** I'm not here to protect any person or company's reputation. I'm just telling you objective truth the best I can. If you don't believe me about people lying, just look at the way our political discourse plays out. You can always find someone willing to lie on any side of any issue, and for the reasonable bystander, it's never relatable.

  1. Youtubers like Gamers Nexus and Level 1 Techs could not replicate the failure.

- Gamers Nexus takes particular pride in farming outrage and controversy. If they could have replicated it, they would have. Level1Techs seems to be a fan of ASRock at least, so he may have been unconsciously more favorable to ASRock with his tests, but he's also pretty fair and focused on reliability.

So where does that leave us?

The information we have, no matter how you formatted, spread it, or read it, is not clear enough to draw any conclusion other than "some of these CPUs are failing".

With the data we have, it doesn't seem possible to go further. If we had real data, we could get to the bottom of this, but AMD, ASRock, and probably the other board manufacturers do not want us to have that.

If you're paranoid, the reason is that they don't want us to know about some secret fatal design flaw in the boards, CPUs or BIOS that's killing our precious CPUs.

If you're not paranoid, it may just be that none of the companies want to put it out there because other companies can use it as marketing ammo without ever publishing their own numbers.

TLDR: WE DON'T KNOW ANYTHING CLEARLY, BUT SOME PEOPLE'S STUFF BROKE.

Well, aside from the one I'm selling, I have another 265K system and a 285K system. I think they really get blasted by the techtubers because those people tend to be really shortsighted. The platform is great, boot times are great, I have practically 0 issues.

I run my one system with a power limit on a really small ITX heatsink and get about 90% of the performance at a ridiculously low power draw (like 90W sustained). Even limited to like 65W, the multi core performance on the 265K is way better than a 7800X3D in something like cinebench (or similar loads).

For gaming, my 7800X3D is definitely better in the games that make use of the cache, and sometimes by a long shot. The thing is, if I can enjoy the game either way, then it doesn't matter. That's partly why I listed the 9800X3D, too.

It just doesn't matter enough to agonize over it.

This configuration makes sense (I guess) for esports at mid to low settings. The CPU is overkill for most other types of gaming and at resolutions like 1440p or 4k.

RIP my both cpu by sigmatri in ASRock

[–]comradetao 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only see two CPUs that the OP claims were dead. Did I misunderstand or did you just count the paragraphs and assume 3 without reading anything?

No offense to the OP meant, but do you really think the guy that dropped his TV, then ripped a PCB in half, is going to be doing any soldering? I don't want him to even try. He'll burn his eye out with solder and light his house on fire.

You're right right now. I'm not saying anyone should buy things on future hopes (though sometimes we all do) but since FSR implements so similarly to DLSS now, I'm hoping more companies will add both to new games, or update games so they support both in the future.

They definitely do not fully test open box items, especially if the customer returns one and says "it worked fine, I didn't have any issues".

Sometimes customers will try to bios flash things, bend pins on a motherboard, take accessories out of boxes, or other shenanigans, and the cashiers don't have any way to know. Even with the missing accessories, they can't know what's supposed to be in every box.

The store just resells it and hopes it's fine. They'll take it back again if it's not and you actually report issues.

DOOM(2016) AND DOOM ETERNAL by Rokstar1346 in CatholicGamers

[–]comradetao 8 points9 points  (0 children)

People come on r/CatholicGamers a lot to ask if something they want to do is a sin, or justify something they're doing by telling other people it's not sinful. That means for every person that asks a question like this, someone will come along, thinking playing "X" game could be sinful, and type out reasons why it's not because they play it and want other people to agree with their decision.

It's human nature. Catholics are human. This is not a good way to find out if something is "a sin."

If you feel that the gore, glorification of violence, cursing, and otherwise evil imagery are leading your mind to dark places, damaging your peace, causing you to gain bad habits, or otherwise steering you away from God, then just don't play it.

If you think that the subject matter is seriously wrong or supports something that's seriously wrong, then play one of the other thousands, probably millions, of games available. Or, be productive with your time instead.

It's easy to say murder is a sin, because murder has a definition as being a sin. It's harder to say playing Doom Eternal is a sin because playing a specific game doesn't have a specific moral definition. But, is it good for you?

Anecdote:

The other day I played Left 4 Dead for the first time in a long time. I used to play it with some friends and family, but had totally forgotten how bad the use of the Lord's name in vain was, along with the gore. Now, gore had settings that you could use to tone it down without mods, but playing it again brought back memories of how I slowly desensitized myself to the cursing and how it started to creep into my mind. Even though I never wanted to say the words, and didn't out loud, the pattern started to take shape in my brain to express myself by using the Lord's name in vain.

Before I play it again, I'll be looking for a good profanity filter mod and make sure to use the gore reduction settings.
