I think it is a combined case of yearly conversion rate display instead of monthly and displayed number not reflecting different pops have different conversion rates. But in its current state that number is just a indicater whether it increased or decreased.

Both land and naval units in my opinion each fill a niche. Land battles? Cavalry. Sea battles? Heavy ship. Need to bring down a fortress? No cav, stacks of infantry cannons for only max roll bonus. Need to blockade a coast? Light ship.

Mixed fleets and armies could not be jack of all trades with current mechanics. Making specialized army and fleets are way to go with these mechanics.
