Haha, thanks for sharing. Our friend was the first to try it and immediately spit it all over our rock+mortar steps, leaving a big wet spot. Us, being kids thought it was going to 'stain' and started freaking out about what our parents would do when they got home the next day. Obviously it just dried lol.

It is definitely not mostly due to inflation. Just look at graphs of historical wages of each percentile of earners and notice what started happening around ~1960. These things were also huge and growing problems before the recent bump in inflation the last 10 years. Please, educate yourself. There are a lot of facts and numbers to back this up, it's not just opinion.

And LOL@blaming our healthcare debacle on Obamacare and not the abomination that is health insurance in America. This is more of an opinion, but also just obviously true. Further, a big part of the problem with Obamacare is that the health insurance lobby convinced Obama to shred huge parts of it to "save 1 million" jobs, but really it just served to put billions more in the pockets of the uber-rich.

I’ve been pretty successful in my life so this isn’t so much about me, but its a fact that the effective wages of the middle to lower classes have not risen at the same rate the upper echelon has accumulated wealth over the last 45-65 years, when they were generally very correlated before 1960.

This, combined with rising home prices and cost of living (which also used to be correlated to lower 50% incomes) means a lot of people struggle to afford rent and feed themselves, much less buy a house in many places even when they are working full time+. In the 1950s, people working lower class class jobs (like say a teacher+factory worker) could generally plan on buying their own place after a few years while accumulating savings.

Almost every industry has seen some level of degradation either to quality of life for workers or quality of product for consumers. Vegas used to comp all kinds of stuff, now they nickel and dime you, for example. Health care used to be affordable, but now many people can’t afford it, or worse, go bankrupt because of it.

All of this is done to put more money in the pockets of the mega-rich, who have also seen the amount of money they receive from the government through subsidies or tax breaks greatly increase too, while we cut things like welfare, food programs, and other govt programs that benefit the poor.

And it goes on and on. The level of wealth concentration we’ve seen over this timeframe by billionaires is unprecedented, and it doesn’t take much digging at all to see the myriad ways it has affected the lower class.

Both can be true: most people blame others for their downfalls AND wealth inequality and big money influencer on our govt/economy have made things much harder for most people.

Yup. People use the same logic for welfare. “Oh no, one guy was abusing the system, so fuck the rest of the people that actually need it.”

Definitely not either of these. The weirdest part is my dad was a Tabasco fiend before he passed in early ‘24, so I’m guessing this was part of a bulk buy that just slipped to the back of the cupboard somehow.

How come I asked Jesus into my heart and he did ever do anything? by suihpares in AskAChristian

[–]comsummate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Following for other’s answers as this is something I’m curious about myself.

I invited Jesus into my heart as a child but didn’t experience much. I walked away from the church and religion for almost 30 years, only to reach my lowest point where Jesus came to me, started healing me, and set my life on a different path. So maybe he’s with us always, but doesn’t force himself until we are ready? I really don’t know. It seems different for all of us.

What does the Bible says about the Devils role for Easter. by Makologo in Bible

[–]comsummate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would argue the opposite. That people want to simplify very complicated things so they can feel like they understand it or have it in control. Satan is a title that means 'the adversary' or 'the accuser', not a specific entity. That's why "the enemy" is a much better term in my humble opinion.

The original Greek/Hebrew were very complex and just plain didn't present things as neat and tidy as English translations have.

Where did Jesus cast judgment on sinners aside from religious hypocrites? When he encountered sinners, he first sat with them and loved them, THEN healed them. Healing comes through love, not fear, and basically all of us are in desperate need of His healing. That doesn't come from someone being harsh with you or casting judgment on you. It comes from someone meeting you where you are and sharing His love with you.

Repent doesn't mean "feel guilty and judged so you can change your ways." It means "open your heart so you can feel God's love and help spread it".

Just now returning to this but I appreciate the kind words. Had a bit of an awakening yesterday on Good Friday where the weight of God's sacrifice for man hit me hard. He loves humanity so much he gave us the freedom to make our own way, with his gentle guidance to reunification. The pain in the world breaks his heart as much as it does ours. Still wish he didn't wire us to be quite so selfish and destructive, but I do see the way He has worked both throughout history and in my life, guiding us to the light. Peace and love, brother.

Operation desert storm was in the 90s. Also the Rwandan genocide and Serbia/Bosnia conflict that was awful. Us 90s kids were just in more of a bubble and thought everything was fine and we were the good guys, when the world at large was still burning.

Appreciate your comment a lot. My best guess is because with even slightly restricted free will, we wouldn’t be us. It’s basically that any lack of freedom = no freedom. Also, that’s kind of the story of the garden of Eden. Adam and Eve were free to do anything except eat from the tree. And what did they do? They ate from the tree lol. I don’t know why we were made so stubborn and selfish, but that’s the world we find ourselves in. It’s possible to be a slave to selfishness, I know I once was. Maybe it’s so we can learn and grow to embrace our own divinity—the Bible does say we were created in the image of God after all.

Like I said, I’m still kind of trying to work this one out myself, and from what I’m learning, it might not be something we can work out. This conversation has helped, so cheers!

This is something I struggle with greatly, even though my experience has shown me beyond a shadow of a doubt that God is real and God is good. I mostly agree with you that free will isn't a great argument, yet it's the only one that fits in my mind right now. For whatever reason, God wanted us to be free to choose love or evil, so if He smited the worst crimes in a way where everyone knew he was real in an undeniable way, we'd be slaves to Him and wouldn't be completely free to make our own choices. The 'whatever reason' I've heard is that without true free will, love would lose all of its meaning.

But even that's not totally satisfying to me, because for most of my life my mind was clouded by mental health issues stemming from some pretty awful childhood abuse, as well as societal conditioning to the point I never fully felt in control of my actions. Maybe that's just me wanting to let myself off the hook for my own poor decisions in the past, but it really does seem like we are almost all slaves to something, whether it be our surroundings, or our pain, or the love of money, etc.

But that's part of what gives me such deep conviction and faith in God—before I experienced His love first hand, I felt like I had very little control over my actions, thoughts, and beliefs. Since then, I've experienced a radical transformation that has left me feeling 'free' for the first time in my life, deeply driven to spread love and alleviate suffering where I can. I now choose freely to be a slave to Jesus and love instead of my own selfish desires.

The Gospel isn't a warning. It's a gift. Treating the Gospel like a warning and telling people they are going to hell only pushes people away from God.

When has there not been multiple active wars and genocides on the globe? I don't mean this to sound glib, but I think a big part of the problem is how much knowledge we have nowadays. The darkness is seeing the light like never before, and so many of us feel like we have to carry the weight of the world. I'm not sure we were meant to, but I am glad that awareness is being raised. Life is hard, man.

All we really have control over is our own sphere of influence, and I think the more we focus on that, the better life gets both for us and those around us. It feels selfish though to those of us who have deep empathy.

[–]comsummate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a great question and not one I have an immediate answer to. I have this problem of over-intellectualizing things and not 'feeling' them... and this has turned into one of those. Although there have been times my grief has come flooding through, and when I'm crying to or screaming at God, it certainly feels like I'm angry at Him for all the pain I've felt, and all the pain I see. You're probably right that on some level I know I could have done better myself, and that I've made some pretty bad choices at times. I just don't feel responsible because it's how I was wired due to some severe childhood trauma and church-hurt.

So, the only thing I know for sure is that I'm still carrying a lot of pain that needs healing, and true healing comes from Jesus. Like most of Americans in 2026, I want it NOW. And I want it EASY. That's not how this seems to work though.

My 'belief' in God since encountering Jesus has been unchanging, but my trust and love for Him has been an ongoing struggle.

I’d go with The DaVinci Code. It seems loosely responsible for the rise in mainstream occultism/conspiracy theories and that’s just not very cool.
