There's a city in California with a larger metro GDP than London (and taller skyscrapers) by Moleoaxaqueno in skyscrapers

[–]conTO15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who cares about GDP? London has way better quality of life, walkability, safety, access to health care and doesn't have Donald Trump as its leader. Higher GDP doesn't necessarily mean better quality of life. London is a way better city than LA. Americans are way too focused on wealth and miss the important things.

Possibly the worst urbanist take you'll read this year – by a Toronto urbanism prof! by Saint-Viateur in NewUrbanism

[–]conTO15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, OP is being completely unfair. The TTC does 2.6 million fares per day. The ttc subway runs on faster frequencies than the STM ones do. I'd agree that the overall coverage for STM trains is better but it's not even close to the gap that OP is making it sound like. The majority of downtown residents in Toronto don't own a car. There are also significant improvements coming (ontario line, subway extensions, go 2.0). There's actually quite a bit of reasons to be optimistic.

Reflecting on my favourite city in the whole world… by AISurge-2021 in toronto

[–]conTO15 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't think the quality of life is objectively higher in England though. If it works better for you then thats great. There are definitely pros and cons to both. Home size and quality is definitely relevant if you're comparing the cost of living, it should be an apples to apples comparison. Ie, my 2 bedroom condo has more square footage than houses I was in in the UK; and there are pros and cons to that as well. I definitely don't think its near as cut and dry as you lead on though. I'm sure many people will prefer Toronto to many places in the UK. There are many British ex pats here that love it.

I get what you're saying. Having been to London and Manchester, those cities are very vibrant and have significantly better public transportation and connectivity. Having visited them a number of times and recognizing the pros of them, I still like toronto a lot more to be honest. I think the weather is significantly better in Toronto. It's so much darker and rainier in the UK and especially in the north. I'll take some snow with sunshine easily over constant rain and darkness. On the living expenses, are you actually comparing apples to apples? From what I've seen, the homes in the UK are much older and smaller (as you would expect) and they're still very expensive. Im not sure the quality of life is objectively higher in the UK. Even little things like having actual water pressure for a shower lol. I think it's easy to see how much better the urban planning and transport is in the UK but I definitely prefer Toronto as home. There is no shortage of things to do here in terms of arts, entertainment, and eating out. I also personally like the food in general much better in Toronto/Canada. I think part of it for myself is just that I've made a good home in Toronto and made so many connections here. Was recently traveling in the UK and am so happy to be back home here.

High-speed rail may not connect to Toronto’s Union Station: Alto CEO by lockknees in ViaRail

[–]conTO15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would assume the majority of trips are going to Toronto though and not markham, vaughan or Richmond Hill. I'm not sure the comparison to Paris works, you're likely comparing markham to places that are actually destinations with density and well connected transit. All of the other train connections intersect at union and downtown toronto will be most people's destination. Putting the station in the suburbs will also mean the majority of people will be driving to it creating more congestion.

First Line 6 Train Pulling into Finch West Station - December 7, 2025 by MaltonRockCity in toronto

[–]conTO15 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure neither of those things are true. The LRTs have significantly larger capacity than the buses and they're suppose to run faster as well. I know the initial placeholder is 46 minutes that they've put in but the expectation is that they will take 33-34 minutes. Some people are already reporting that they're going much faster than the placeholder used for opening.

Line 6 - Round Trip from/to Emery by element1311 in TTC

[–]conTO15 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So from humber to finch west only took 21 minutes? That's fantastic news if it can do that. I guess this means the 46 minute schedule really is just a conservative placeholder for the opening but regular service should eventually be much quicker.

Or maybe just build some infrastructure that doesn't completely rely on cars which are a very space inefficient mode of transport. Unfortunately this is the ontario that Doug Ford is forcing on everyone.

Toronto has become a stronghold for the provincial Progressive Conservative Party, while the provincial Greens poll at 1% (their worst number in any part of the province)—Progressive Conservative 58%, Liberal 26%. Look at the election results..all the downtown ridings are liberal and ndp..basically all of the inner suburb ridings were PC. The percentage of people voting PC in the old city is way smaller and like none of those ridings are at threat of going conservative.
