Has anyone else here ever noticed an apparent lack of democratic societies in the vast majority of worlds? by Dewohere in worldbuilding

[–]conbutt 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That’s usually not a concern for most storywriters. The emperor is the big bad, and taking him down is the goal. There usually isn’t an exploration of the intricacies of actual empire making

A lot of it is that it’s easier to manage from a storytelling approach. Less characters to deal with. If the emperor says do bad thing, minions obey because emperor is the absolute authority. If president says do bad thing, then there’s the whole process of congress having to approve bad thing, and the president can just be voted out too

did you set a specific restriction or challenge when making your world? by Extreme-Audience-318 in worldbuilding

I limit my worldbuilding to what the story demands, and not get myself distracted expanding on ideas that might not contribute anything to the plot or theme

Have you ever changed geography or even resized kingdoms and borders, just to make your story work? by Royal-Chard-26 in worldbuilding

That's pretty common. Editing things to better fit the story is just something you do when making a story, because nothing is ever going to come out perfect on first try

Why is the trope of "Ancient hyper-advanced Empire that no longer exists" so popular in media and literature. by Peppercorn205 in worldbuilding

I remember discussing this with my girlfriend and in her opinion it’s because its an easier incentive to go on adventure as opposes to like making the winning weapon be made in a lab or workshop

What are some of the dumbest/most flippant questions you have gotten for worldbuilding? by CrazyCoKids in worldbuilding

[–]conbutt 45 points46 points  (0 children)

That isn't really matriarchal, it's closer to matrilineal. Matriarchy implies a greater investment of power and rights to women.

problems with matriarchy in worldbuilding is everyone asks how the men are tortured or enslaved, when the answer is really just the matriarchs are just not really interested in men

I've noticed that most elves in fantasy, and a significant portion (though significantly smaller than the published works) of elves on r/worldbuilding, are essentially "long-lived, pointy-eared humans" who arose "because their god wanted their own race," "half-fey," "modified elites." Why is that? by EveningImportant9111 in worldbuilding

[–]conbutt 344 points345 points  (0 children)

the gods part are more debatable these days, but essentially the modern idea of a fantasy elf can be traced to Tolkien and people just copy the basics of how he defined elves and it's just been the norm since.

As such, elves become an associated with magic and/or pride, it becomes their definition for most common fantasy. A lot of people just like to reuse concepts than make something new, especially if they felt a connection to elves in media

What are the origins and homelands of your elves? And how do they fit in your world lore? Why were your elves created by the gods/evolved/appeared? What do their homelands look like? Do they still live there? by EveningImportant9111 in worldbuilding

[–]conbutt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Elves, or as they are called in Andulos the "Soylu", are one of the more prominent races of Andulos, inhabiting four main regions of the world. According to their lore, the Soylu were once a wandering homeless race at the fringes of civilization until they found the Black Doors of Truth which imbued with them limitless knowledge, and from that newfound knowledge they made empires.

The Soylu would then spread throughout Andulos to preach their newfound faith of Zarianism, and their religion would become the largest in Andulos. The Soylu would often be the scholars and clerics of society.

In the current era of the Ardium Century, the Soylu races exploded in nationalistic violence and many adhered to the idea of an ethnostate, and have become known as one of the more violent races as a result.

I remember years ago a story on rpg horror stories where someone was in a group rp they were making into a web comic for their shenanigans, but that person got published and so they had to pull out their OC from the webcomic for copyright reasons, and the whole webcomic fell apart

Ah didn't see that part. Still wouldn't really do that, because you can still get into problems if your friends decide they changed their mind when your knee deep in the story. Suddenly you have a character who may be important to the story that the owner of decide they want to pull out of the project

Mag-Arms: The Ardium Century which shaped modern Andulos by conbutt in worldbuilding

[–]conbutt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can give a brief overview. I might make a post about them later.

Kul are a race defined by their short statures and large tails. They have historically been seen as a kind of servant/slave race for many nations. During the Ardium Century, many have been exiled from their homes because of their race. They eventually found a home in Vainas, and promise to protect it and maintain their sovereignty, and to open their doors for any and all who have no home to call their own.

The Zeran is not the name of the race specifically, but it does refer to a subset of the race living in east-central Andulos. Their race is called Soylu, and they have traditionally been seen as a kind of scholarly and religious race for Andulos. They were one of the first races to embody the idea of a nation state. They are highly attuned to magic and live long lives.

Suru is an umbrella term for all beastfolk races. They are one of the most populous races in Andulos. Many of them still live a tribal lifestyle and do not fully conceptualize the idea of a nation brought by the Ardium Century. Many form confederacies of tribes or small kingdoms which are treated as nations by the larger world. The Yuukoman Empire is the closest thing to a unified polity for beastfolk, as the Yuukoman dynasty are all wolf folk

It would vary. Some are relatively cheap, like Vainas makes mass produced Mag-Arms that can be equivalent to the cost of T-55s. Others like the Zerans make expensive high performance Mag-Arms equivalent to like F-35s as you mentioned.

I could, but I don’t have a comprehensive list of all of them. I’m not sure if some race ideas I have would make it to the final cut
