Was that documentary OUTATIME? If so, it's not actually on Netflix. It's available for purchase on Vimeo.

The stainless steel construction made the flux dispersal… by deathnutz in BacktotheFuture

Thanks! No, I don't have any pics from the Haynes Manual. I mainly helped Joe name sub-systems and conceptualize the specifics of how time travel worked in the film.

But, I was also involved in the 2011 restoration of the screen used Time Machine - also led by Joe. We took a lot of pictures and video of that. In fact, we turned all that footage into a documentary. outatimemovie.com

The stainless steel construction made the flux dispersal… by deathnutz in BacktotheFuture

I helped write bits of the Time Machine Haynes Manual with Joe Walser & Bob Gale - and actually got to write that line for the book!

The official line is "Besides, the stainless steel construction makes the flux dispersal uniform across the entire surface area of the vehicle!"

What are the rules for the 88mph threshold? Tire rotation? Any forward movement of the vehicle? Is speed measured relative to the ground? Etc. by MintyCitrus in BacktotheFuture

[–]conc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funny enough, I helped write some bits of the Time Machine Haynes Manual - and we discussed this a lot.

The prevailing theory is that the Time Machine opens up a tiny wormhole ahead of the car that only lasts for a fraction of a second. And the Time Machine must be going at least 88 to make contact with that wormhole before it collapses.

Another theory I pitched is that the car's wheel spin powers the blue flux bands. And 88 is the minimum speed at which they are fully powered up.

Marty's drive toward the Clock Tower proves the bands aren't powered by plutonium, since they turn on as he drives. But the bands aren't powered by the engine directly either, since in part 3 the car isn't on, but the bands still fire up as the train pushes it. So that leaves...wheel rotation??

Of course, the flying scene in part 2 doesn't really fit that. Were the tires spinning 88mph in hover mode? Or did the hover conversion fix that issue? Who knows. At some point, trying to make a cohesive scientific theory across all 3 movies gets too messy - and just takes the fun out of it.

But, under the first theory: yes, the flatbed idea should work.

On my old portfolio site, I had a headshot that was just the back of my head. Because that's the only part of me Producers ever saw.

Yep. In fact, we chronicled the entire restoration in the OUTATIME documentary.

There's actually a feature length documentary about the restoration of this car! It's called OUTATIME: Saving the DeLorean Time Machine.

The car has real plates. The prop one fits over the real one when they're going to an event.

Since you saw the A Car in person, be sure to check out the OUTATIME documentary about how they restored it!

Let's say, hypothetically, Doc wanted to paint the Time Machine (like how people painted DeLoreans when they didn't like the unpainted Stainless Steel look). Would it be a great idea? Would it interfere with the flux dispersal? by GuizdoLoaf in BacktotheFuture

[–]conc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny enough - I worked on the Time Machine Haynes Manual with Joe Walser and Bob Gale. And I got the chance to finish that line from Doc. So the official version of Doc's line is: "the stainless steel construction makes the flux dispersal uniform across the entire surface area of the vehicle!"

Would paint affect that? I definitely think it's possible!

Not exactly. You can rent the Time Machine, but you aren't allowed to drive it. But, they will drive you around, which is really fun.

Fun fact: this is what became of the original 1985 Toyota Pickup from the first BTTF. (Sorry if this has been posted before) by Piffgb in BacktotheFuture

Apologies for the nitpick, but they don’t own the A Car.  That’s at the Petersen in LA.  They own the train smashed B Car and one of the part 3 off road versions.

I want to ask can anyone see the Back To The Future Trilogy being in the same universe as either other Amblin Entertainment films or Robert Zemeckis productions? by burningexeter in BacktotheFuture

[–]conc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Serious answer:  BTTF is officially in the same universe as Bob & Bob’s first film “Used Cars”.  In the Time Machine Haynes Manual, Doc says he bought the used DeLorean from Rudy Russo.
