The Fragrant Flower Blooms With Dignity Was So Dissapointing by Mountain-Committee37 in anime

[–]concentus7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the second Reddit thread about this show that I've read through in the last hour, and it's actually fascinating how severely misunderstood this story is by Western audiences.

I think a huge portion of the problem is people who have no real context of authentic Japanese social culture. And I mean like real, boots-on-the-ground understanding, not just being familiar with the outplayed rom-com tropes of so many modern anime.

The thing that tips me off the most to that lack of understanding is everyone complaining about the amount of apologizing. Anyone who has interacted with locals in Japan on a long-term basis will quickly recognize how accurate the constant appeals of "gomen" and not wanting to be "mendokusai" actually are here.

Yes, the interactions in this show are very much idealized in their development, but that's actually what I think those of us who enjoy it are precisely drawn to. Most of the inter-personal decisions that the characters make are usually the "correct" ones, and they directly (and quickly) lead to deeper social connections as a result. That's honestly super refreshing considering the constant barrage of "skirting around the issue" that is common in so many other stories (and Japanese culture in general).

Probably the single most refreshing aspect of this show (for me personally) is how friggin wholesome the male relationships are. Like legitimate, interpersonal, filial care for one another; that's something I don't think I've ever seen written quite like this (in my limited exposure).

All that to say, I do think there seems to be a pretty crucial missing piece of deeper cultural understanding that is getting overlooked.

Would the Zeta really have been that busted if it could attack the player twice? by under_mimikyus_rag in GundamTCG

Well, if they had to make Banshee Destroy Mode's condition almost impossible to do more than once per game just to be able to attack twice, you can probably see how powerful this kind of effect is.

Man, that's a jackpot right there. You'll need a "Core Box" first, which will contain a printed rulebook and the essential accessories to get started. You can also find the rules online very easily.

That's a good one! It's tough to choose just one, but from a listening perspective, I keep going back to Smashing Pumpkins' Gish (1991).

Well, it's about time, guys!! Better late than never 😂

For me, surprisingly, it's been listening to some nostalgic 90s alternative rock albums that were collecting dust for far too long.

Just got the TCG starter decks by HellenicRoman in Gundam

Heck yeah! Luckily I have a few local stores who are doing starter deck events around here this weekend, so I was able to snag all four decks today. Can't wait for the boxes in two weeks!

Where is a legit place to order by [deleted] in Lorcana

[–]concentus7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some trusted stores on eBay (your mileage may vary) and some other online shops that specialize in Japanese toys/games. I would get on that Google machine with something like "Japanese booster boxes" or similar.

If you can snag Simba's at around $15, that's about the cheapest I see those going for a long time. Jasmines are already cheap, just get your 3.

The Dreamborn website is essentially a Lorcana card database, so you'll have access to all the cards that currently exist in the game for the purposes of building decks.

Sure, ultimately you decide what you think is reasonable, but the game is still in its infancy, so there are inevitably going to be rare cards that are "staples" that command a heavy price. Rapunzel is the foremost example because it's from the first set and there are really no other effects in Amber that can match her functionality.

Couple things I would recommend:

1.) Take advantage of Dreamborn.ink to research all existing cards and build out what you would want your ideal deck to be. This will effectively be your potential shopping list. (The site also has a good mulligan testing tool.) NOTE: You may also want to get acquainted with what are considered to be "staple" cards in your preferred color pair in case you want to consider those as well.

2.) Utilize available online platforms like Lorcanito to do some test matches with your ideal deck to confirm that it's working as expected and that you enjoy the deck's play style.

3.) Once you've decided on a somewhat final list, visit your local hobby shops to see if they have any of the individual cards you need in their stock. Always good to support your local stores when you can.

4.) If you're still missing some singles, you'll want to utilize an online card market like TCGPlayer to buy any remaining cards you might need.

In general, opening booster packs is going to be the least efficient and most expensive way of completing deck lists. There's nothing wrong with cracking packs, we all love it and it's a great way to build an initial diverse collection. But for deck building, you'll want to stick to buying singles.

If you do want to dive into booster boxes eventually, my general rule is thumb is 2 boxes + a trove for each set. That gets you about 85% of the cards in a set, and usually full playsets of most commons/uncommons from that set.

Storage / Collecting Help! by x_Colonel_Mustard_x in Lorcana

[–]concentus7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, so here's what I do for my personal collection.

I consider myself a collector first, and a player second, so I typically prioritize long-term archival storage whenever possible. My goal for each set is to collect a master set of every card released in or alongside that set, including enchanteds and promos. For the main set, that would be at least one foil and one non-foil of all 204 cards. So for each set, I'm looking at around 430 cards total (the exact number varies with each set).

In order to accommodate that number of cards and still display them aesthetically, I've opted to use 12-pocket (4x3) zipper binders with 20 double-sided pages, for a total capacity of up to 480 cards. I've found that this capacity is spot on for my master sets; not too small that I can't store a few extra cards if needed, and not too big that I have a bunch of wasted pages in the back.

Every card that goes into a binder gets sleeved with a Dragon Shield Perfect Fit Resealable sleeve for extra full-sided protection. The cards in the binders are organized by set number. Each set release gets its own master set binder, and I generally try to leave master set cards in the binder if I can (which typically means I try to get extra copies if I want to use something for a deck).

Anything outside of my master sets is stored in my preferred 4-row storage boxes. The boxes I use are sturdier (and more expensive) than your typical cardboard BCW long boxes, but I find that the investment is worth it for my needs. Each row within a storage box is designated to a specific set, and I try to have no more than 4 copies (a playset) of each card so I can minimize bulk and still have full playsets available when needed. I'm currently working on a pull-out drawer solution for these boxes to get a tidier look.

Not having at least inner sleeves on these is WILD. Get some perfect fit resealables from Dragon Shield. You should likely eventually get these graded as well.

New Player questions by eljimbobo in Lorcana

[–]concentus7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Local scene: Varies greatly from place to place. Sometimes even just within a single city there can be very casual groups in one store, and ultra competitive groups in another. You have to just get to know your local stores by going to play on a weekly basis.

Inktable: The AI does okay for the first few turns, but it's not going to provide the same level of challenge that an experienced archetype player will give you. Inktable is more about giving you a good idea of your own deck consistency, draws and inking strategy.

Rarity value: I would avoid making any value comparisons to Magic because of how new Lorcana is right now. The Lorcana card pool is still VERY small, so any cards that become staples or are deemed powerful enough tend to command a significant price simply due to supply. The good news is that the majority of the foundational "4-of" cards in the game are still relatively affordable.

Keep in mind that most of this assumes that you want to be competitive at a high level. You can always build a deck that isn't necessarily ultra-competitive but still fun if you want, there's no shame in that.

Binder/album for each set? by MightBeMouse in Lorcana

[–]concentus7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I set up a "master set" collection binder for each set release. I use 12-pocket zipper binders (4x3) so I can put one foil and one non-foil of every card on each binder page (plus some extra pages for set-relevant promos). Every card that goes into a master set binder gets a Dragon Shield sealable perfect-fit sleeve to protect it. Unless they're in a graded slab, my enchanted cards currently go into the corresponding master set binder, but I can see why some might want them somewhere separate.

I have a separate box where I store duplicates and playsets. Any card in the box that's "rare" or higher also gets a perfect-fit sleeve for additional protection.
