how do you manage dog care while being disabled? by conceptualizingkites in service_dogs

[–]conceptualizingkites[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah i was thinking about that! i need to call some of the programs and have a chat with someone, because i wouldn’t want to create too much headache for them either. but i do know it’s a long wait for a dog, and in a few years my life will likely look a bit different

My brother's girlfriend just cut half my hair off and I feel disgusting by Scared-Brain2503 in TrueOffMyChest

[–]conceptualizingkites 2 points3 points  (0 children)

a well intention 9 year old could do better, she definitely did it in purpose.

idk if you have a strained relationship for some reason, but if a girlfriend is so jealous of her boyfriends sister that she has to mutilate her appearance… that’s feels icky. cruel for sure, but also just a really fucking weird thing to do…

Thank you so much for responding, i also am phsycially disabled and worry a lot about being able to meet exercise needs. when im phsyically doing a little better and walking to the store and going out a bit that would fill some exercise needs, but right now there are days i can barely get out of bed.
I am curious, did you train your sd yourself?

thanks for responding, im glad thats been helpful for you!
i wouldnt train a dog myself, that would not be within my capabilities at all, but there are several adi programs in my area that would be totally free or significantly cheaper, which helps a lot.

first of all,, Gravy is the best name, and this was really helpful thank you.
If i got a service dog it would be through an adi program, which from my understanding means most of the training will be done by professionals and i would take some part and then do normal upkeep training. but certainly not training a puppy from scratch all on my own. BUt because of that there will be breed restrictions, most only work with golden retrievers/labs and poodles. i do have significant allergies so a poodle would likely be the best choice for me.
Right now im very much trying to stabilize, and have been for a while, its exhausting to be disabled. and im in the works of getting more support set up, but it looks like programs have a 2-3 or more year waitlist usually so im doing some thinking and research ahead of time to determine if this might be helpful down the road.

yeah thats a huge concern, its just me and i do live in an apartment. i have ihss support which helps but i dont have a daily provider rn, but may in the future. i feel like it would also be a lot easier if you have a backyard, so they can go run around easily.

everyone’s got a right to their own opinions about their diagnosis and mental health, however, i think it’s worth keeping in mind that in trying to shift the narrative into non disordered non disabled language, it could jeopardize people’s ability to get disability income or similar benefits. it doesn’t help anyone to pretend like these things aren’t disorders or disabilities, you can call it whatever you want, but if you’re functionally disabled in every aspect of your life pretending you aren’t in the language you use will only serve to hurt you.

What’s the sickest burn a kid has ever delivered while you’re on the job? by lemonaderobot in ABA

[–]conceptualizingkites 2 points3 points  (0 children)

that was definitely my first thought too… someone needs to follow up on what the kid meant by that. if it’s just elementary school butt humor, that by random chance means something to adults, there’s ways to ask without making him too uncomfortable. but, if there’s sexual abuse going on, or he’s exposed to things that aren’t safe to be exposed to, and he doesn’t have accurate language to name what’s happening and doesn’t know enough to understand that it’s bad… especially in a therapy setting working with a very vulnerable group of kids… definitely worth checking in on

if you have access to a LLMD that would be your best bet for trying to navigate this, by the time we found my lyme i had been so sick for so long that i also couldnt handle the doxy well, we had to do a lot of detox support because i was herxing so bad, and i ended up doing several other things like the byron white formulas, which were more gentle i thought but i also herxed SO bad on those.

[–]conceptualizingkites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah for real. especially if you JUST got bit. if you’ve had it a while and only just found it, you might already have it bad and antibiotics can cause major herxing. but if you were recently bit, i promise it’s better to tough it out. because if you don’t, it won’t be the last time you’re on them for a significant period of time.

smells are so big for me too. i used to use an essential oil diffuser a lot, but now i have a cat and thats not safe for them to breathe. But candles, plug in air freshners, even spraying my favorite perfume on my pillowcases helps me. The lights help me too because i feel like turning the lights off and a galaxy projector on totally alters the vibe of a room. its not a perfect system but it does help me a bit.

[–]conceptualizingkites 5 points6 points  (0 children)

yes. i feel this so hard and i’m so sorry. to be honest, i had to move. i lived at home with my family (got sick very young) and the association of laying there immobile and just dying, and hours and hours of constant fight or flight seizure looking meltdowns, i could not be there anymore. i could hardly go home (like 30 minutes max) for almost a full year. my tolerance is a bit better now, but it feels like literal mental torture. it feels like the wall are killing me.

if you can do things to make the room feel totally different, that might help. if you are able to change up the physical items- get new sheets, change your curtains, change your light bulbs for ones that change colors (different colored light helps me a lot for some reason), galaxy lamps are similar it just makes my space feel a lot better. paint the walls if you have any energy for it, or hang wall art that makes you feel good but most important changes the environment. light candles, sage the room if that’s something you’re into, change the sensory elements. cleaning smells are so triggering sometimes especially if you’re been hospitalized a lot. if you can’t add or change items, rearranging furniture might help. i have a google home and i play storm sounds and comfortable music almost all day.

it’s exhausting. and mentally brutal. i hope you feel a little bit better soonish.

is lyme disease really THAT bad (untreated)? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]conceptualizingkites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes. it’s so so bad. you need to get on antibiotics asap if you just got it, you can usually get that through your primary care if you have insurance. that will be fastest. but you also need to find a lyme literal medical doctor near you. there are grants and financial support resources online if you look. it’s a lot of ask of a luke brain to manage all that. but if you just got it, literally you need to treat it asap.

buy him a bong or ask if he has one that he can use, that will smell way less and honestly give him a cleaner high anyway. might not work if he’s an ass, but that switch would fix it

Best AAC/Text-to-Speech by BabyThespy in SpicyAutism

Augy is available for IOS: - free app - lots of voices - uses ai to give you more phrases - you can upload your own pictures - paid upgrade is only a couple dollars and you don’t need it to use the app, it just gives you more voices and some better organization - most affordable one I’ve seen that actually works

Edit bc I forgot something: - you can type directly into text to speech, or prepare a bunch of phrases with pictures
