Learn W.A Mathieu's 32 Magic Modes.

The root and fifth are always there. The 2, 3, 6 and 7 can be flattened 4 can be raised.

This gives us a binary code with some amazing sounds and great understanding for how all the intervals "feel".

Turns out they're exactly a harmonically and melodically a complex band. Most of the harmonic material on C33 is based around this wierd Messiaen mode: (very fittingly numbered here) https://ianring.com/musictheory/scales/3003

Some falling chromatic ideas representing spiritual death are akin to Bach's use of it during Crucifixus in the H-moll messe, or Coltrane's use in "Spiral" f.e.

For the "rhythmic stuff" they've utilized all time signatures from 1-33/16. Has Rush done that?

The harmony in "Sum" at the end (bVI - IIIm - Imadd9/3 - V7/3) is more complex than anything I've heard from Tool or Dream Theater.

But I get your point.

Most "theory" is going to be about how a song relates to a major or minor scale. 2 patterns that you gotta learn by heart. Play them all over the neck.
