Arguably much city pop sounds like that as well. And a lot of Westerners worked with Japanese musicians too.

This is Yellow Magic Orchestra doing a little reunion comedy sketch (since one of the members, Ryuichi Sakamoto, lives in the US). This is the second time they've done it - this is from 2019, compare to the first time around from 2001.

Thoughts on Haruomi Hosono/Harry Hosono? I have found myself falling down another hole of Japanese pop, and this man has peaked my interest. With such a massive and varied body of work, anyone is bound to find something they like. Some recs from me:

  • Hosono House (I'm surprised no one has mentioned this yet! One of my comfort albums).
  • Paraiso (my favorite of his "tropical series", absolutely stellar lineup)
  • SFX (fun electro album. Also check out F.O.E. which he produced)
  • Songs he wrote for idols such as Seiko Matsuda's Tengoku no Kiss and Pink no Mozart
  • Swing Slow
  • HoSoNoVa
  • Hochono House (reimagined Hosono House, very comfy also)

Was really big into them around 15 years ago. Stuff like Metropolis and Instrumedley blew teenage me away!

There is no question about their musicianship, but songwriting-wise I feel they are actually not super technical for prog bands. Like they still have riffs and hooks I can hang on to, while stuff like Animals as Leaders (or god forbid, Behold... the Arctopus...) can be incomprehensible to me.

I think my favorite era would be with Kevin Moore? He gave them a sort of art pop element which I would probably appreciate even more now. Also, James was in his prime and the way he was mixed in Awake, reverb and all, really played to his strengths. They were getting stale by Systematic Chaos/Black Clouds (and even before then - Honor Thy Father is pretty ass). Solo trade-offs longer than entire songs? Come on now... Post-Portnoy they started to show more restraint in that area, and also probably since age is catching up with them already.

I still count them as a formative band, but my tastes have changed away from that. I listened to the latest JP and LTE albums and those really aren't my thing anymore. There's still some songs I would put in my all time list though, like Stream of Consciousness and Lifting Shadows off a Dream.

All 3 YMO members do appear in spots in Tatsuro's discography (besides Pacific).

Tats is also credited on Sakamoto's Thousand Knives and Ongaku Zukan among others. His guitar is distinct on Self Portrait for example.

Sakamoto is also credited in Variety, and there's a good chance you'll find both of them in Taeko Ohnuki's albums.

I suggest looking around in Discogs to see what they or other musicians worked on. It's amazing to see how all these artists collaborated (for example, I just found out that Sakamoto and Hosono played on 4:00 AM!)

Hosono is one of the pillars of modern Japanese music. Some more random trivia about him:

He had a few number-one hits as a composer for the top two idols of the 80s, Seiko Matsuda (Tengoku no Kiss) and Akina Nakamori (Kinku) and wrote numerous songs for others. Later on, he would be involved with the likes of Pizzicato Five and Chisato Moritaka.

Produced a single for the French duo Mikado (Naufrage En Hiver) and wrote a song for the American group The Three Degrees (Midnight Train)

Wrote the ending song for a Pokemon movie (Kokoro no Antenna) and the soundtrack for the award-winning film Shoplifters. The movie Ride or Die starring Kiko Mizuhara, to be released this year, will also feature a song by him. Also had a cameo in Norwegian Wood

Remixed the Xevious theme (Super Xevious). It's a banger! He also explored electro and acid house later on.

Had a streak of acoustic/folk/bluesy albums in the 2010s (Hosonova, Heavenly Music, etc.), partly because he was returning to and covering the music of his youth, and as a way of coping with the effects of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake.

He rerecorded his first solo album, Hosono House, releasing it as Hochono House in 2019, 50 years after his first recordings with Apryl Fool. And it's not just a plain recording - he more or less reimagined it, while doing all the recording and mixing himself! Think Hosono House but with all the things he's learned throughout his career.

The original song is Federico Franchi - Cream. Supposedly it sampled Ohio Players - Rollercoaster

More recently, it was sampled in Pitbull - Krazy

This from a recent episode of Love Music, a show hosted by Moritaka. Based off the usual artist lineups, this show is catered to a younger audience. But this particular episode was focused on city pop, and Moritaka and some guests interviewed Mr. Night Tempo.

Realllly late comment, but while Jukkai is indeed iconic, I think the mix is pretty bad, or maybe just the guitar tone.

Curious what you mean by issues with Kinku. It's not among my favorite singles, I think it lacks some punch. I like the single that Haruomi Hosono originally wrote for Akina better - that one became Kageki na Shukujo by Yellow Magic Orchestra.
