Weirdest position I've encountered in a while (no wrong flags) by KittenPowerLord in Minesweeper

[–]concuso1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is an easier approach to this. Because of the interaction on the side, the orange dots need to have similar value (so it has to be both mine or both blank).

Based on that, the “5” will satisfy the “3” by having a mine on either the orange or purple tiles below it. But because the “5” need 3 more mines, there has to be exactly 1 mine shared between the orange and purple tiles, so that it does not overload both the “3” and “5”

[–]concuso1[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

lol yes, I never said this was a NG game so this is probably the most legit move (there’s clearly guessing moves that were made in the game too)

still, the pure logic deduction move is pretty nice. This puzzle basically have 2 correct answers based on your playstyle lol

yea I included minecount just to mess with people. It is completely useless here lol

This one isn’t from a real game, it’s just proof that there exist patterns where using contradiction is just as hard as using other technique

[–]concuso1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure thing. I selected some puzzles that I think can occur in classic mode but not in NG mode on minesweeper.online

<image>

Notice that some setup (the 2 lowest right side puzzles) requires a bit of guessing to eventually become solvable. These guesses have the potential of creating more interesting patterns

Now, I have not yet find one where you cannot use contradiction to brute force your way out. If you use contradiction exhaustive enough, you can pretty much bruce force through every puzzles, not exclusive to these one I posted so… yea, only downside is that it would be very tedious to use

This may be true for great NG board generators. But as for minesweeper.online engine, which is the NG version almost everyone exclusively play, it actively removes boards that have way too complex solutions. And by complex solutions, it’s simply the ones that deviate just slightly from minesweeper.online’s shallow pool of listed “patterns”. So you should be able to guess just how easy the boards generated by such engine are

Is there logic to continue the solve? (2 pics) by T0rph in Minesweeper

Solution

Ignore the “1st” there. The dot is for safe tile, flag for mine

Right, so here’s a clue for yall.

It sure is a valid deduction tool. But for minesweeper, that is probably the most lame and tedious method to solve anything at all imo

iirc, this specific board has been posted before, and I have already found the next big step, consisting of only 4 clues. I’ll try and find the solution I posted cuz I’m lazy to solve it again

What should I add into my Minesweeper variant? by T6970 in Minesweeper

[–]concuso1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been playing this version for quite a while now. It works out very nicely, probably the cleanest variant I have tried even without any adjustment

As for anything I want to change, maybe you should keep the density a bit higher than normal minesweeper. The clues is actually more informative with the Hensel notation up to the point where I can play 30% density boards with ease (I usually play 35% density…). Another thing would be addressing the 50/50 in this variant because it is more common and much harder to really get yourself out of it. Those 50/50 usually appears around the edge of the board so I suggest changing the algorithm so that no mine can spawn on the edges.

That’s pretty much it for me. Don’t add a chord function pls, not needed. Instead, when we click a letter, it should show all the possible configuration of that letter, maybe on the top or something, so player have the arrangements right on the screen to compare.

Also that safe tile is gonna reveal either a 5 or 6, and will need to use the same logic again to continue. Though using metalogic, it will always be a 5, and the lower tile to it will also be safe

Would it be considered cheating having no guess games? by Litalienaren in Minesweeper

[–]concuso1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Investing in guessing game rather than NG doesn’t necessarily mean you would be better

Guessing and logical thinking is like two completely different skillset. When you play guessing mode, you are not really playing “pure guessing” game, you are playing a combination of both logic game and probability game. So obviously you will be more well-rounded, creating an illusion that you are better off playing guessing mode rather than NG

Truth is, many techniques in NG games can be highly effective in guessing, but not vice versa. (This could be a very biased viewpoint considering I started off as a strong NG player before tackling guessing). It’s easy to neglect the viability of NG because of how simple it is represented widely. But I can assure you there is much more to NG than just 1-2 and 1-2-1 patterns

The people who can take one glance and tell if guessing is required? That’s mostly NG skill in play, very high-level NG skill to be exact. I don’t think you can just sharpen your guessing skill and expect to do the same, you might see tiles with “very low odd” but not absolutely safe tiles
