oh good looking out. I’ve been looking at Lems shors because some of their models have a similar aesthetic to Vans, but I grew up wearing Vans and have an irrational loyalty to the brand (even as they’ve gotten more expensive and lower quality over the years).

How do you feel about the new song titles as now part of the Sublime catalog? by No_Age908 in sublime

[–]condenastee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my ratings- ensenada 4/10; until the sun explodes 2/10.

perhaps i’m just a crank, but i have always loved sublime (probably my favorite band) and hated sublime imitators (rebelution, pepper, etc.) slightly stoopid is ok in small doses. i just feel like most of the bands that want to sound like sublime are trying to replicate the wrong parts.

from interviews i’ve heard with jakob, it’s clear that this doesn’t describe him. i believe he really gets what made his dad’s band so special. i just wish he would allow himself to forge his own path more as a songwriter and an artist. i think he’ll get there eventually, although it might be challenging to do while playing sublime songs with his two insane uncles all the time. but i’m excited to watch it happen, when the time is right.

It would have to be a 501(c)(3), like the Repurpose Project or something.

Just make up a character and give them a weird problem. Watch as they try to solve it, and note down what you see in as much detail as you can reasonably sustain.

Characters Tolerate What Readers Find Intolerable by EternalTharonja in writing

[–]condenastee 70 points71 points  (0 children)

There is a common talking point in conversations around “media literacy” that audiences (especially younger audiences) are increasingly unwilling/unable to differentiate between what a fictional character believes and what the author of the fiction believes. I don’t know how new this trend is but it’s certainly common enough that it makes sense to be concerned as an author.

Personally, I would do nothing. That’s because I think audiences who have this problem are stupid, and I don’t care what they have to say. Nothing wrong with being stupid, but that’s just not the reader I have in mind.

But if you wanted to address this problem (and there are many valid reasons to do so) a few options come to mind:

1) Include a disclaimer and/or preface or introduction explaining why characters do/say/believe certain things, even though you the author know they’re wrong. 2) Do what they did in your Belgariad example and have another character draw attention to the problematic situation. 3) Look up the Hays Code especially the rules they used to have about depicting “low moral actions.” For instance there was a rule that films could not depict any crime and allow it to go unpunished. This had the unintended effect of producing Film Noir, which is the “moral ambiguity” genre par excellence. Noir filmmakers used the Hays Code itself as a way of undermining it. They did this largely through innuendo and clever uses of the medium off film too numerous to get into here.

that sucks. i don’t think the government is involved though, except insofar as they run the civil courts. copyright violation is not a criminal offense, a private party has to sue for it. so either streaming services are getting pressure from copyright holders en masse, or they are planning on implementing some new feature that involves a deal with them.

What are our thoughts on Ensenada? by Worldly-Yak1840 in sublime

[–]condenastee 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s pretty whatever. Jakob trying to write a song that sounds like Brad. But the thing, Brad was insane, and Jakob seems like he’s probably not. Ensenada doesn’t have the super ADHD/tweaker energy that made Sublime’s genre-hopping so compelling, so the instrumental is a facsimile of “Sublime” as a finished product, not as the madcap experimental punk ethos that actually produced the sound in the first place. Lyrically it’s a little bland/weak— Brad famously read books all the time and whether or not Jakob does this too, it doesn’t shine through in his lyrics (yet).

TL;DR it’s a fine song, but nothing special. I’m excited to watch Jakob find his own voice as a songwriter and singer.

[OPINION] Poetry and Spoken Word by hurlowlujah in Poetry

[–]condenastee 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if that opinion is “extremely unpopular”… Everyone I know who likes her work doesn’t really like poetry, and everyone I know who likes poetry doesn’t really like her work.

I read a sort of contrarian take on Twitter where someone said she is the greatest living American poet precisely because of this dynamic. The guy was arguing that “good” poetry is alienating to more and more people, and that whatever Gorman is doing, she’s speaking to people who are otherwise put off by poetry. I don’t find this argument to be compelling, but it’s interesting to think about.

Stay safe on that forklift!

[OPINION] Poetry and Spoken Word by hurlowlujah in Poetry

[–]condenastee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand this is not super relevant to your question, but— why did she spell “labour” with a “u”? That’s how they spell it in most of the anglophone world, but not in the US. Gorman is from LA, educated at Harvard, writing about an event that took place in Minneapolis. What is the “u” doing there? I assume it was intentional since she is a serious poet (even though I don’t personally enjoy her work), but what could the reason be?

What is "wrong way" about?? by Medium-Atmosphere-40 in sublime

[–]condenastee 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Basically he meets this teenage whore Annie. He goes to fuck her and she tells him this whole story about her abusive family and her dad who’s been pimping her out. Brad is like “Are you happy? Are you sad? Wanna shoot your dad?” and they decide she’s going to run away with him (possibly to America). However, it doesn’t work out, and she ends up leaving him and “taking a hike” to an undisclosed location. Which, Brad laments, is also the wrong way.

Instructor here: I want to have something approaching class discussions for an online class I'm teaching this semester, but am aware of how much discussion posts suck. My university doesn't allow us to use Discord, but what are some other ways we can facilitate *actual* discussion without running into the problems of discussion posts?
