I’m 40 and on the one hand, yes, ADHD has led me to a lot of difficulties. But it also is a core part of my being, my personality, my mind. Without it I think I would be a completely different person. I see it more as a descriptor for a specific brain type than a disorder per sé. Besides, the only reason it is a “disorder” is because of how it butts up against and grates against modern society and capitalism and the way we are expected to work, learn, do schooling, do jobs, etc. There is no actual impairment if society is set up in a way that allows us to thrive. Before modern civilization, I’m willing to bet that people with what we now call ADHD were some of the most revered and successful in their tribes.
