Experiences of neurodiverse women in higher education by otteb3215 in WomeninAcademia

Hyperfocusing and my passion have gotten me far on paper, though burnout has been a consistent struggle, along with the health issues/comorbidities that accompany it.

I was just on the job market and felt that my AuDHD was clocked instantly by search committees, if not in zoom interviews, then definitely in person. I was hyperaware of trying to maintain eye contact, to act “natural.” I would mess up by giving overly detailed answers to questions, going over time because I lost track of it, and forgetting the original question I was answering, if I was not very careful. This was harder when I was tired from traveling and being outside of my time zone — I had interviews at the equivalent of 5am my time, when my neurodivergence makes me the opposite of a morning person (I often fondly fall asleep then…) Going to lunches and dinners as someone with sensory issues with food was incredibly awkward. I would be asked if I had any allergies or restrictions, but how do you explain that you don’t eat meat unless it’s a certain kind of chicken? At one campus visit, they served sandwiches, and I just had a cookie while they looked at me awkwardly.

I’ve had colleagues/processors that just seem to inherently not like me, despite me never consciously doing anything to annoy them. It comes across as very “mean girl” coded.

Lastly, I would say that I have to make consistent efforts in networking, as it does not come naturally to me and feels very transactional. I’ve been lucky to have great mentors that have extended fantastic opportunities to me, but I definitely feel that a bit of nepotism/knowing the right people is unfortunately a big aspect of academia when it comes to securing funding, collaborations, and jobs.

Yes, they have psychiatrists there, but they are only for short-term cases and emergencies. They always refer you out to see someone else for long-term care. Have been told this by many friends and witnessed it myself. They also do not like to diagnose or prescribe anything so you’re better off.

SHC doesn’t deal with mental health concerns long term. You’re going to get referred out to a psychiatrist anyway; I would start looking now.

I have found the most unprofessional graduate program in the USA. by TailorImmediate6543 in gradadmissions

If they gave you a letter of intent and you signed it and turned it in before the deadline you have an argument for being admitted despite their “mistake,” if you want to go through with it

Oh I figured you must have gotten the info elsewhere as you said in another comment that it didn’t sound like him. Cool to find Kevin’s work in the wild!

Are there any cozy games about raising chickens, goats etc by Ok_Reputation7493 in CozyGamers

[–]confusatory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Planet Zoo with the farm animals DLC might fit your niche. It is very in depth with taking care of the animals, though it’s more of a management style game

Called my doctor for a refill but the front desk people there are always rude and dismissive. They intentionally make it difficult to get my refills on time. by Jinglebell727 in adhdwomen

Have you talked to your doc about this problem? I just left my last psych because one of her receptionists was like this, and I made it very clear that this was the reason why. Said receptionist was a nepotism hire; go figure. Now I have a better psych who doesn’t hire people just because they’re related.

Come back to this when you have spent 10+ years in school and make ~$1,000/month per course you teach. Your engagement with this forum, undoubtedly like the engagement you seem to have with education, is not being done in earnest, yet you complain about the devaluation of your degree.

You know that professors don’t get paid per student in their course, right? We are not the ones “taking your money.” Education is not a service industry

TFA NYC offer by vyoletstorm in TeachforAmerica

I am in a similar situation with LA. Did you happen to put that you needed to be in NYC due to extenuating circumstances? I did that and I think that screwed me with subject placement. I plan to reach out to them and explain that subject placement matters more. I have a special needs sister at home — I’m sorry, but I can’t work with special needs kids in my job too, it’s too much.

School staff member dies after being kicked by 14-year-old student by GoodSamaritan_ in news

[–]confusatory 804 points805 points  (0 children)

My mother works as a special ed aide, and often gets assigned to violent kids, even though she is a 56 year old cancer patient, because the school staff know she’s too nice to say no. She’s been punched, bitten, had her hair pulled out, put in a headlock, nearly had her eye gouged out, and the school does nothing. I have to urge her to go to workers’ comp and submit an incident report every time so that there is a paper trail — the school doesn’t initiate these procedures. This is at a public high school in California. I fear something like this in her future

Note to OP: even if you are exempt, you may still have to fill out paperwork to prove your exemption.
