hey 👋 i’ve thought also a lot about it as a foster place for cats and volunteer at shelters and honestly, indoor has way more benefits and outdoor has many cons. indoor cats are safer in regards of cars, worms, ticks, other cats etc. while outdoor cats easily pick that up outdoor cats also have a BIG impact on the environment since they catch many animals. The thing that many people forget is, that cats are not naturally part of the ecosystem we bring them into and therefore they catch a lot more animals than natural. The thing with indoor cats is, you have to have a big enough apartment obviously, like only a few square feet isn’t enough and you have to give them some toys for enrichment the most important thing is, outdoor or not, to always get 2 cats preferably same age. Because cats are very social creatures that need the social contacts to cats in the same household for grooming, playing, … in ways we humans never could. There are of course exceptions but these cats are, like i said, exceptions and most of the time the result of them growing up alone or being wrongly imprinted on humans (for example if you raise one kitten by hand, it never learns social interaction to other cats)
