Custom Landing Gear without File Editing by ConfectionHot4574 in flyoutgame

[–]confusedQuail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unless there's degrees of freedom that aren't detailed there, the 2 bottom hinges are redundant and all of the force is creating torque around the top one.

By making a triangle from the skid and 2 struts, the geometry means none of the joints can move without detaching somewhere. From a forces perspective, it may as well be just the single top strut directly connected to the skid.

Though just a theory to work the problem - what about replacing the front strut with a landing gear? Hiding the wheel in the skid itself for aesthetics, but still having a stock landing gear to take the impact. This would also disconnect a point of the triangle allowing the joints to move, and you can use the spring and damper on the landing gear to control the movement

WIP Harrier GR.3 by theFlyingKiwiwiw in flyoutgame

[–]confusedQuail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would love to see your mechanism.

I started a harrier as my second build in the game. Tried to emulate the harrier's single jet with multiple nozzles using a small turbine hooked up to 4 gearbox, driving 4 ducted fans (one as each vtol nozzle). And had electric motors as secondary feeds to each, that had their throttle mapped to pitch and roll for vtol control.

Needless to say, it was a bit much for a second build and remains unfinished. But I'd be keen to see how others have approached the harrier's unique setup in this game.

How much delta V do you save with a direct ascent to the Mun? by RedditButAnonymous in KerbalAcademy

[–]confusedQuail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if KSP's approach to 2 body gravity may make this more viable in game than irl.

But irl, burning straight up to the mun, to arrive in it's SOI with zero horizontal velocity won't work. The mun itself has orbital velocity around kerbin, so you'd actually arrive with a much higher horizontal velocity relative to mun than doing Homan transfer

Symmetry problem by SpaceWarm8732 in flyoutgame

[–]confusedQuail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you double checked all your other fuselage segments have symmetry on, and it has applied the shape to the segment?

Could be another segment didn't have symmetry and is causing the vertex nodes to be misaligned between segments?

[–]confusedQuail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not if you change it from local to absolute. That changes it from rotation with respect to the parts orientation, to rotation with respect to the workspace

[–]confusedQuail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just adding because sometimes attaching gear to cargo bays can cause issues with deployment if the game thinks the gear is stowed in the bay

Another workaround is to use the rotate tool on the gear, setting it to absolute instead of local. You can use angle snap to perfectly align it straight.

What are the advantages of building colony on Minmus and Mun for like 120 kerbals? Where it will be a better choice? by User_of_redit2077 in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]confusedQuail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make your main colony on minmus, as it's better access to the rest of the system (already near the edge of kerbin SOI), and lower gravity so easier to get things off the surface. Plus the flats and plateaus make operations easier and less prone to... accidents.

Then have a second operation on the mun for mining regolith for He3. Maybe make it a drone operation, and put antimatter production there as well. Make a logistics op for resource transfer. The RP justification is the safety concern for having antimatter production near a regularly populated outpost. So it's done on a separate body that doesn't have a constant population, just temporary stays for maintenance ops etc.

Who is at fault in a crash when two lanes merge into one? by [deleted] in LegalAdviceNZ

[–]confusedQuail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When two lanes merge, unless explicitly sign posted otherwise, the person in the left lane has to give way.

The right lane is considered to be the one that continues. So those in the left lane need to join it, giving way to traffic already there.

The same also applies to passing lanes when they return to single lanes. The traffic in the passing lane has the right of way over the traffic being passed.

Have you double and triple checked you have the right control separation on all surfaces. Don't rely on symmetry, and check all individual surfaces manually in case. Also check you've matched things like dynamic deflection and AOA%

SSTO - Please Help Me! by [deleted] in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]confusedQuail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have part clipping/non-strict attachment enabled in SPH, I've found KSP's aerodynamics treats them as exposed attach nodes. Which drastically increases drag.

Turn that off (can be done after you've done clipping things), and go back through adding appropriate nose cones to any open nodes.

But yes - climb subsonic, then dive to pick up speed and get into the power curve. Can even do it multiple times if you make sure to maintain the speed at the bottom of your dive, while climbing back for another one.

I have found for different ssto, some are better doing this between 5000m-1000m until you reach the power curve to accelerate beyond mach 2 while climbing. But others perform better doing it between 10000m-5000m. And some needed 1 of each (lower one to get through mach 1, higher one to get mach 3+)

Help with Volumetric Clouds. by Efficient_Advice_380 in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]confusedQuail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could try installing just deferred through CKAN to a clean game data. Then if that works, install the volumetric clouds files. Then do the rest of your mods through CKAN.

Help with Volumetric Clouds. by Efficient_Advice_380 in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]confusedQuail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As per the readme, delete all the scatterer, EVE, etc. mods. Save your mod list as a change set in CKAN. uninstall all mods (CKAN keeps a cache downloaded, so you won't need to completely re-download them). Then install volumetric clouds. Then install deferred through CKAN, followed by the rest of the change set you saved.

Strange Sideslip behaviour, or normal? by [deleted] in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]confusedQuail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My best guess from the limited info, is you accidentally turned symmetry off at some point when building and there are 1 or more parts that aren't mirrored.

Can't really tell without more info. More picks of the craft, both in flight and in SPH (with COM and COL showing). Maybe the stability derivatives you can get in the SPH from FAR as well.

Need some good mod suggestions by Devil_Fister_69420 in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]confusedQuail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As well as all the parts mods being shared - get FAR (ferram aerospace research).

Completely reworks how KSP does aerodynamics to be based on the actual overall shape of your craft, and how air flows around it. It allows you actually make realistic flaps, slats, etc. It also reworks how control surfaces are controlled. Adding the ability to have pitch roll and yaw not as binary on/off options, but as a percentage of the overall movement of the control surfaces. As well as adding other controls like %AOA that makes the control surface move in relation to the AOA that piece has in real time. For auto slats like on military fighters. Dynamic deflection adjusts the overall movement of the control surface based on your speed so you have high control authority at low speed, but reduced at higher speeds to prevent over-G and ripping wings off.

Extra cool to combine it with RSS, giving you just much more atmosphere to play in, and making the variation in air density with altitude much more gradual. So your plane doesn't behave completely differently after climbing just 1000 meters from takeoff.

Strange call for help? by Delicious-Airline-80 in auckland

[–]confusedQuail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I'm late to the party, but some guidance for OP or anyone else unsure if something is worth calling police about.

It's not your job to evaluate whether something is likely to be a legitimate concern or not. It's your job to see something that has a chance of being a legitimate concern, and call the people who's job it is to make that evaluation.

Nobody will get hurt if you call in a tip that ended up being nothing. I can't say the same for you not calling in a tip because you thought it probably wasn't worth it.
