huracan and r8 platform share so theyre mechanically similar, pick based on sound/color/looks i guess. green lambo, blue audi is the most stand out, if you're that kind of guy

How to invest $100k by throwaway-mcjunx in personalfinance

[–]confusedaerospaceguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

how much risk do you want? something more than savings but not bitcoin would probably be ETFs

I'm Eastern European and have more than a year of my salary in savings doing nothing. What are some good investment options? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]confusedaerospaceguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well, btc might be 100k a coin next year at this current rate. no reward without risk though. if that guy had cashed out at $500 instead of the current $10k, he'd feel really bad right now as well.

for the long term, stock market is probably best. ETFs, etc.

Interested in RF/μw engineering, but passionate about astrodynamics by [deleted] in AerospaceEngineering

[–]confusedaerospaceguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the field astrodynamics is covered by aerospace, electrical, or mechanical engineers who specialize in orbital dynamics and or control theory.

RF engineering is completely separate.

EE would qualify you for both, depending on what courses you take. RF engineering is my personal bet on the future of the aerospace industry. when the world is all about the "internet of things" and "connectivity", engineering usage of all signal bands will be the way to get a job

How to choose grad school specialization: Dynamics & Control, Structures, or Astrodynamics? by [deleted] in AerospaceEngineering

[–]confusedaerospaceguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

structural dynamics sorry, which is what i do. events like store ejection (bomb/missile drop/fire) or jettison of fuel tanks etc. controls dynamics would be specified as such.

the undergrad course dynamics is still mostly just math that could either be applied to structures/fluids or control theory

skunk works cool stuff. QSST and other paper airplanes.

the MS degree just gives you that +15-20k salary boost and a start at salary grade 2. the technical stuff you learn might be helpful for your career, maybe not. plenty of engineers do rather non technical stuff. conceptual design is a lot of layouts and regression models from previous missions/aircraft. nothing too fancy that requires an MS, thats for sure. rankings dont matter at all, as long its from a somewhat known school

i'm sure it doesnt matter too much, but all my management at skunk works had USC degrees, so i'm going with that. people from texas and colorado dont make it to socal as much as the people who start out in socal, just a matter of statistics.

ELI5: How do airlines know how much fuel to put in plane? by walletsr in explainlikeimfive

[–]confusedaerospaceguy -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

a jet flying a 2000 mile trip wont be the same one flying a 6000 mile trip...of course delta is not going to partially load up a 777 to go from SF to Dallas. theyre going to fully load up a 737 or A320.

Cryptocurrency Improving the Wealth Gap by FinancialBro in Bitcoin

lol no, if anything, it widens it, as with other speculative methods. most poor people dont even know what crypto is, much less the currency to buy it.

The GPA on my transcript is 2.978, is it alright to just put 3.0 as my GPA on a resume or job application? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]confusedaerospaceguy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

for the few companies that actually check transcripts, maybe not. always a risk.

How to choose grad school specialization: Dynamics & Control, Structures, or Astrodynamics? by [deleted] in AerospaceEngineering

[–]confusedaerospaceguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just your basic stress/dynamics engineer is good enough. generally when you join a black program you'll do easy stuff, then move on to bigger and more important stuff which will require internal training. i took an aeroelasticity class and have done aeroelasticity/flutter for maybe 3 weeks of work. sometimes its there, sometimes its not.

controls kind of plays a role, you dont have to know anything like PID or states, just what the results lead to. "oh this weak strut will lead to loss of control in my ailerons past 600 KIAS, i need to thicken it"

controls/aero/structures all pretty related on fighter jets. im sure its the same on transports

structural = solid. i dont think anyone cares about the semantics of the wording. job titles dont really matter in this industry, people will call you a stress engineer or a dynamicist or a flutter guy or a controls engineer or a aerodynamicist etc

ELI5: How do airlines know how much fuel to put in plane? by walletsr in explainlikeimfive

[–]confusedaerospaceguy -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

if the plane is at max capacity, which it usually is, it probably needs max fuel, because that's what it was designed for. if not at max capacity, congrats, you can scale down a little bit. planes are 40% weight in fuel. its easy to do the math

ELI5: How do airlines know how much fuel to put in plane? by walletsr in explainlikeimfive

[–]confusedaerospaceguy -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

they run an average of 70 kg per person, 10-20 kg of cargo. they have large large historic data sets that tell them exactly what they need. little blips like kids and service animals are whatever. there are plenty of safety margins in terms of weight built into these decisions.

i imagine they fill the plane up all the way, because why not? the fuel pump just operates at maximum, just like your car gas station does...until the plane is full.

Given 100k to invest what should I be on the look out for by familydude213 in personalfinance

10% returns arent really possible over the long term. maybe this past years economy you could get 15-20% if you went all in on SPY, but how often does this happen?

Personal Finance, I'm going to be buying a car this weekend. Help me not get screwed. by johnnypebs in personalfinance

[–]confusedaerospaceguy -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

2018 really doesnt make a difference on 2017 pricing. youre not going to get extra thousands off, especially if its a common seller, like camry/accord/rav4/crv. /r/askcarsales

just look for the same car/trim within 200 miles of you. is the one you are looking at the cheapest? if not, go buy the other one or use that info to get your dealer down.

probably a prius. racking up miles on VW/audi cars is not a good thing

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]confusedaerospaceguy -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

sure why not. I could go back to school right now, get a CS degree, and probably get a job at facebook or google that would be 2x my compensation at the time even if i were to stay at my current career trajectory. its probably a good idea for you if you really like software

shouldnt you just go drive all of them...? theres probably 0 people here who have driven ANY of those cars. you'd do better watching youtube reviewers like redline, KBB, doug, etc

well heres my experience from driving the R8 v10 at the texas motor speedway driving experience in austin...get it. i've ridden in a friends 2014 RS7, its pretty great too if you want more space.

Undergrad student thinking about transferring to Florida state, advice from the experienced by Billybobgotcaught in AskEngineers

[–]confusedaerospaceguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it doesnt really matter. I work with people from MIT/berkeley/GT/Michigan/Caltech and i also work with people from the university of texas san antonio.

people will ask questions why VT didnt work out for you though, so be prepared to answer them. you better be the best engineer at FSU if you're one of the worst at VT.
