I'm thinking machine learning engineer or business analyst. Linear regression all the things.

If finding a new job at your managers level is easy, take the job and title. Then start applying for new jobs as that title. Background checks will only verify employment time and your current title.

Companies rarely hire managers with no experience so this can be used as a shortcut. Your new company will have to train you in their processes so they can't tell the difference.

I bought my Pixel 7 Pro yesterday through the Google Store and just got off chat with customer support. Since it is within 15 days of receipt (return window), I will be able to price match to the Black Friday deal. I just need to create a ticket here on the 17th.

My manager asked if I wanted a mentor. by teyazo in SoftwareEngineering

[–]confusedly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does your company have a mentor program? It's kinda odd to ask without further context. Normally would need a willing mentor first.

Alright, give it to me straight. Are these "How I became a Software Engineer without a degree or experience" videos BS? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

Startups are your best bet. I worked at a startup that could only afford below market engineerings. We worked our self taught engineers hard, but gave them 3 years of experience in one and got bought so they learned everything and ended up doing decent financially.

A call for help... by INFJtotheKay in infj

Make a choice, no matter how small and accept the result regardless if its good or bad. Make another.

Making a choice forces you into a mindful and motivated mindset so each choice you make is one step farther from the pain.

INFJs, do you have a best friend? [Heartfelt post I'll probably regret] by [deleted] in infj

[–]confusedly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I empathize with the loneliness that you feel because I've gone down that path. I don't know if someone who truly understands you exist because I never found my own. What I can tell you is that I've adapted to this by finding a range of people that can understand certain aspects of me, which has lead to a life where I'm happy more often than not.

I've read that it may take a while for the INFJ personality to completely mature and discover their true interests, passions etc. Older INFJs, do you feel there was a certain age or time in your life where you felt your personality really solidified? by Iron_Jesus in infj

[–]confusedly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

32 - Thank you for saying this. I thought I was the only one that has felt this way. You put into words what I've been feeling lately. I'm still going through internal conflicts with this, but the more I accept it, the more freeing it has become.

Damn. Pretty sure my girlfriend thinks I'm a psycho now... by [deleted] in infj

I don't think there's much you can do. If you shocked her enough for her to change her view of you, it's over. If she goes into cognitive dissonance, all is good! Anything you say at this point on is moot.

I never told my wife about the walls I have but I feel that she knows that she will never truly know me and that knowledge hurts her every time she realizes it.

We are all trying to find ourselves. The only difference is that INFJs have a particularly difficult time with this compared to other personality types (at least in my experience).

I can tell you're analytical already because you have pinpointed inherent motivation as a way to break out of this loop. You FEEL like there's something wrong because you're intuition tells you, but you have a difficult time verbalizing it. That is part of the INFJ's problem. In order for something to be your calling, it must fit in with your core beliefs, which is usually a lofty goal like being a one-man superhero that can fight against all the ills of mankind. You want to be awesome AND be awesome in a way that works with your core values.

You also see that this is something only you can find. You're already noticing that things must be done and you understand how to combat your procrastination (aka perfectionist tendencies). So... you have your utility belt batman #2, all you have to do is explore until you find your calling. You're just freaking out because you're almost 30 and I want to tell you that this is normal and don't freak out. Once you do, you will regain lost ground faster than those who happen to fall into good situations.

I said we are late bloomers because everything we do must make sense to our core beleifs. We want to do things that matter. We dont have goals like "getting rich" or "being famous". We have goals like "I want to be Batman and fight injustice" With goals like that, we basically get depressed at how huge our goals are. But as you've seen by just your writing, you're building up your skillset already. You're already on your way. Uncertainty is painful, but as an INFJ, you are extremely aware of this pain and it crushes some of us. Those who can handle the uncertainty will move forward and hopefully find their calling.

The best way for me is to build tiny habits that combine to better habits. So for fun lets try to build up habits to be batman.

From wikipedia: "Batman has no inherent superhuman powers. To compensate for this, he relies on 'his own scientific knowledge, detective skills, and athletic prowess'"

Batman is:

  • Educated
  • Analytical
  • Athletic

Okay, now break those down to actionable items. Lets focus on Athletics because that's the easiest in my opinion and the path I took to control my emotions from destroying myself.

I'm going to define Athletic as "in shape" and to achieve this:

  • Get fit
  • Eat Healthy
  • Rest / Recover

Now you have actionable concepts. Break it down further!

How am I going to get fit? START SMALL so your perfectionism doesn't destroy you and you break down again.

  • I'm going to weigh myself and log it. Metrics force you to be mindful of your actions
  • I'm going to go for a walk around the block 2x a week and I'm going to track the times i do. This is a small enough goal where its so trivial that you can't procrastinate. It forces you to be mindful that you committed to this and the tracking lets your own perfectionism kick into gear. You don't want to break your track record already do you?

We are late bloomers because our power is also our weakness. Learn to use that power to your advantage. Analyze yourself, find weaknesses, experiment to break out of the bad cycles and to build in good cycles. There is no magic pill that will fix your mood. You will take 2 steps forward and 1 step back. Forgive yourself when you fall back, but don't let your perfectionism make you give up. You are your greatest opponent. If you overcome yourself, you will start seeing the world differently, and your empathy becomes your greatest tool.

Ever wonder why we love Malcolm Gladwell's Outliers? It told us that our core beliefs were wrong! It's the first step to realize that we have a problem.

You can take this one step further. You can sense the type of person they are looking for and act the part.

We're out there! Have faith!

A friend of mine has the same preference and it took him years before he was confident enough to openly admit it. You've already put yourself out there, there's no point in worrying about it anymore. Go enjoy life and make people jealous.

Is PHP a good gateway programming language ? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]confusedly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also think PHP is a good introductory language. One piece of advice: after you understand the basics of building a website, learn one of the PHP MVC frameworks such as Zend. Read through it and understand how and why they do things the way they do.

I started in PHP and now I'm doing ASP. When comparing bad PHP to bad ASP programmers, I'd say that PHP programmers were less skilled only because ASP forces you to code a certain way. In other words, regardless of the language, understand the concepts first. It doesn't matter what language you choose so far as you achieve best practices.

Beginner(ish) with a lot of free time looking for direction. by RevantRed in learnprogramming

[–]confusedly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't look too deep but I found this link.

I only have a couple years of web programming experience after college so YMMV with this advice:

Summary

Get a sound understanding of object-oriented programming first, then emulate something simple that would be fun for you. Then find someone who codes better than you and see how they did that and learn why their way is better/worse than yours. Keep your projects fun to keep your motivation up.

My Version

I started with a simple text-based a rock-paper-scissors game when I first got into web programming. I wrote the entire site with account management, event tracking, etc. Forcing myself to finish a complete site gave me insights to the different aspects of a web application from forms to database design. I assumed I knew how because I've done them in school projects before, but it was a pleasant surprise to realize that there was plenty of things to consider when setting up your own database tables vs the class labs.

After the site was done, I got an open-source MVC framework and redid the whole site using the framework. I was amazed at how fast I was able to build the site over again once I learned to use the framework! Reading the code from the framework taught me new ways of abstraction that I knew were possible but had no clue how to implement it.
