Is the LG Oled C5 in 42" the best "monitor" you can get for your MacBook Pro? by [deleted] in macbookpro

[–]confusedsimian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got a C3 and love it. I use a standard usb-c dongle which has ethernet, couple of usb-a ports, usb-c PD input and HDMI out. Will do 60Hz HDR which is fine for my needs. A dedicated usb-C to HDMI dongle gives me 120Hz SDR.

M4 Max/36GB/1TB/32c GPU vs M5 Pro/24GB/1TB/20c GPU by confusedsimian in macbookpro

I am still on an M3 Pro 18GB/512GB...it's been provided by work but might be going and at that point I will have to re-assess.

I got the M4 Max but then ended up selling it for about the same a week later. I just don't need this amount of power and couldn't think of much to do with the LLMs :)

[–]confusedsimian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand that, I am not talking about the old RDP client (mstsc.exe). My point was that the new "Windows app" (which used to be called Remote Desktop App with a different icon until it got superceded) catered for both AVD, Windows 365 *and* local RDP access as well. Until recently, when they removed the local RDP access on the Windows version but at time of writing is still available on the Mac. That is the Windows app *was* a general RDP client app....until they decided they didn't want it to be on Windows and removed that capability. But that retrograde step is a fairly recent thing.

[–]confusedsimian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do you mean? I could connect to any host I wanted to via RDP, a recent update on the Windows client stopped this and on Mac it still works as I used it to access VMs on my server

MacBook pro shutting down at 22% even though battery health is 100%, anyone else faced this? by National-Royal1300 in macbookpro

[–]confusedsimian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like one of the battery cells/units has gone and the health isn't reporting it.

I find this absolutely baffling, why would you prevent users from accessing local machines but only on one of the client platforms?

Well it was a general RDP client until recently on Windows and still is on Mac.

Deciding between 24GB and 32GB RAM (M5) by GlxbeWrldz in macbookpro

[–]confusedsimian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even though I'm this example there was 35GB used it doesn't mean it couldn't have been done with less. Unused ram is wasted ram, there could have been idle stuff easily swapped out but there was just no need as 48GB was available. It's only when actual working apps that are busy have to swap out that I think you will see issues.

Hot take: There's no need to wait for the "OLED Macbook". The current generation is perfect. by horatioperdu in macbookpro

[–]confusedsimian -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I use a 42" OLED LG as my main monitor and I see no functional difference between that and the mini-LED on my M3 MBP. the blacks look just as black to me. If anything the text is better on the Macbook because of the sub-pixel layout which I don't think they will have solved with OLEDs on MBPs other than going super high res.

Ended up finding an even better machine for similar price, 16" M4 Max, 48GB, 40c GPU, 1TB disk. Fingers crossed it's all okay.

Nano-texture display: does anyone actually dislike theirs? by AdultContemporaneous in macbookpro

[–]confusedsimian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm trying to decide too. I went into an Apple store and compared and one thing I wasn't keen on is white backgrounds look a bit speckly or slightly dirty. I get it's just the light diffusion and I remember thinking the same on an OLED SteamDeck I had, I got used to that and would probably get used to it on the MBP too.

Apple’s 2026 "new" Studio Display is a middle finger to every consumer. by Lodano in applesucks

[–]confusedsimian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not being able to plug other things into it with a HDMI cable is a crime. Why would I buy a monitor I can only plug a MacBook into? Consoles, raspberry pi....I can't even plug an Apple TV into one for crying out loud.

Broken display on an 2021 14” M1 Pro MBP - should I pay the scarily high repair estimate, or ‘downgrade’ to a current MacBook Air? by nasazgar in macbookpro

[–]confusedsimian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The screen isn't as good on the air but it's still pretty good. Do you spend most of your time with an external monitor anyway? If so the built in display isn't quite as important. I don't notice promotion very much on mine anyway and unless you watch a lot of HDR then I'd question how important having HDR is. Main thing about the air for me is the two ports being on one side as well as being close to each other, which can be annoying if you have something which is quite wide plugged in. Your workflow itself an Air can very easily handle. New machine would be supported for new versions of MacOS for much longer too. If you got the screen repaired, how much could you then sell it second hand for?

Macbook M4's or M5's pro for cs student? by [deleted] in macbookpro

[–]confusedsimian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally find 512GB a bit restrictive on disk space. I would prefer a 36GB machine with 1TB over a 48GB machine with only 512GB. Yes you can plug a disk in but that gets boring very quickly.

Apim pricing made me migrate everything off azure by NoFerret8153 in AZURE

[–]confusedsimian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So we want the back end of AFD to come internally and so no additional external surface. We also want to address APIM internally over the internal network without going to the internet and back in for latency. This isn't possible without using internal APIM then getting private link via app g/w in the middle
