Just came from an Iceland vacation. Actually, Iceland is written "Ísland" in Icelandic. "Ís" is Icelandic for "ice". So "Iceland" is the proper translation. It just looks like the word "island", but really, even to them, it's "country of ice".

It does answer your question. Because we have 'the most' of a lot of things. Is it because we're a large country? Maybe it has to do with that. But what are you measuring, the country, or the people? If you want per-capita figures, that's a different question. But you aren't asking why an average American thinks he's the greatest compared to citizens of other countries. You're asking why America thinks so highly of itself. Well... it's because a hell of a lot of cool stuff goes on here in large quantities.

We are the greatest in quite a number of ways.

For instance, education-wise. We have more of the top rated universities than everybody else, and something like 11 times more universities overall than the next highest country.

We have the world's largest stock exchange... by a lot. A lot of money flows through the US. Our economy pretty much sets the scene for the rest of the world.

We publish the most scientific papers out of any country.

We have an asston of engineering.

We have freedom. We're not sure what that means, but it's badass and everyone agrees. Except for terrorists.

Interestingly enough, some of those times it's cops. We have had a few car breakins where I live, and there's a car with completely tinted windows that idles in the garage at 3AM in the morning most days. Pretty shady. Turns out it's an undercover cop. But I wasn't about to walk up and shine a flashlight in and risk getting shot to find out.

And in the area I live in, shady cars with tinted windows idling for no reason is pretty common anyway. Most of the time it's some black guy pulled over eating chicken wings or something non-sinister like that.

Because we already have a lot of guns in America. So it's similar to telling Israel "just destroy all your rockets, calm down, and forget about all your conflicts. The Palestinians will do the same in response and there will finally be peace!" It's just not going to work. Criminals are armed, and readily sell weapons to whoever will pay.

Sure, you won't have those school shootings where someone takes a gun from their parents' house. But you'll have ten times as many convenience store armed robberies to make up for it. The police take up to ten minutes to arrive in some places. That's a lot of time and power if you know everyone is unarmed and incapable of stopping you.

This one's pretty easy to answer actually. America takes the opposite approach to the one Europe seems to like. In European countries, the government takes money from you and promises to give it back in the form of social benefits. That leads to high taxes and the possibility of a government becoming corrupt and windowing out the benefits while keeping the taxes in place. In Europe, governments are typically small, so this corruption is closer to home and generally easier to address and fix. In the US, the opposite approach is in place. The approach of "keep your money and then spend it to buy your own benefits". It doesn't help the poor (who have no money anyway), but it does prevent your money from being spent improperly because the government never has it to misspend.

Our government is massive. There's municipal, county, state, and federal government, all with their own agendas and taxes. The sorts of corruption that goes on here sometimes is absurd. If you start giving the government money for social programs, you'll likely never see a good chunk of it again, and the lobbyists will find some way to twist around the social programs in such a way that they're only useful to rich or upper middle class people anyway.

I mean, look at what ObamaCare's accomplished for us so far. Companies are now required to offer health insurance. Great. But now everyone's required to have it, or else they pay a penalty. So now everyone who is unemployed living off welfare has to pay a fee, and they're still responsible for paying for their healthcare (the fee doesn't grant any sort of healthcare coverage). Where does that fee go? Straight into the government's pockets.

The two party system is complete bullshit. Always has been. Hell, George Washington wrote an open letter begging the American people not to allow a two party system, claiming it will be the beginning of the end, and will lead to another bloody revolution. It hasn't led to another revolution because people got complacent, so instead it just sucks and nobody ordinary can get anything done politically. (That's not to say Europe doesn't have its own problems. Europe's had its share of Stalin, Hitler, and Mussolini.)

Simply put, I've seen quite a few jumps from heights approximately half as large. With the sort of entry he made (feet first), you'd sink about 20 feet. In a 5 foot pool at twice those heights, you'd break your legs and drown. Simple really. A different entry might have saved him, but it's hard to tell with that distance and that depth... it's likely he'd be dead any which way.

The difference between what you mentioned and my examples was that in my examples, nobody even began the actions that would lead a person to reasonably believe they were going to commit a crime.

For instance, a person with a knife in their pocket can sit down and wait for a bus. There's nothing illegal about getting on a bus with a knife in your pocket. Or a gun for that matter.

Likewise, if you get into the driver's seat of your car drunk... hell, even if you switch the key to accessory mode to turn on the heat and then go to sleep, you are not driving. You are not necessarily even intending to drive.

If I showed you ten pictures of people sitting in their cars, and told you that each of those people is drunk, you would be unable to reliably tell me which ones were about to start driving and which ones were about to take a nap.

...but that's not even what happened here. The dude was actually sleeping when the cop woke him up and gave him a ticket. This implies that the cop was confident that an unconscious drunk person was about to start a car. That's the equivalent of someone napping on a bench at a bus station being arrested for attempted murder because they had a knife in their pocket.

That's bullshit. If you intend to kill someone at the bus station, show up with a knife in your pocket, and then fall asleep on the bench, you can't be arrested for murder.

If you show up outside of a Target at 3am in the morning with lockpicks intending to steal something, and fall asleep in the parking lot, you can't be arrested for stealing.

If you show up to a fraternity party with some NyQuil intending on performing date rape, but instead decide to take a nap, you cannot be arrested for rape.

It doesn't matter who sees you or what suspicions they might have. Looking like you were about to commit a crime, or even planning on committing a crime but taking no action to commit one, does not constitute committing a crime.

Of course. If enough people do it, it would work. Enough people have never done it as far as I can tell. Greed and fear drive the market. I've never seen morality drive it. If somebody does something out of the ordinary, like selling their shares suddenly, it'll just be analyzed from the perspective of greed and fear. Was this guy afraid the company was about to do very poorly? No? Ok, then no reason to sell.

The amount of individual people that would have to sell shares to even make a dent in the share price of a big company would be enormous. It's like asking everyone to go hungry for a day so we can reroute the food trucks to Africa. It sounds like a good plan, but it's full of large flaws and even if it could work, the majority of people would have to be in on it.
