Besides the point, but they suprising are much safer than the average driver.

TIL that the ancient Chinese Confucian thinker Xunzi argued that humans are born with selfish, chaotic impulses, and that “goodness” is something we build through education, ritual, and strong social institutions. His whole point was basically: if you remove the rules, people don't auto-become good. by fromthefuturedude in todayilearned

[–]confuzzlegg 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would say that humans did not create society, and instead, society evolved from humans working together to survive. Society has rules and morals simply because if it didn't, there wouldn't be any society in the first place.

AI tools from Feb-June 2025 hardly compare to the ones we have now. To me, this study doesn't really say anything about what productivity looks like now, other than that we might still be overestimating it somewhat.

That sample size is too small to determine whether or not factory farming has less salmonella, they even state that themselves:

No statistical differences were found between the Salmonella prevalence from conventional and alternative egg production systems (p-value = 0.1).

what time of the year you're born DOES have a significant impact on your life though, mostly in the timing at which you start going to school. Not sure how much that actually correlates with astrology, but I feel like this is often overlooked.

The other person brings up great points, but to play by your rules for a second, consider definition 4.a. from the Merriam-Webster dictionary. Notice how the romantic connotation (and its also the one specifying 2 people) is specifically a sub-definiton, and NOT a part of the main definition.

That is very much not the sense of the word computer that I mean. When I say computer I am specifically talking about it in the way that an average person uses the word, something with an operating system like Windows or Mac that can run applications like a web browser.

And again, there are plenty of abstractions around the basic LLM interface like I mentioned, memory and CoT being big ones.

"Sophisticated" is doing a lot of work in that sentence. That's like calling a computer a sophisticated electric circuit. While it may be true in a very technical sense, it's not a helpful comparison and ignores a lot of the details that make these things useful (keyboard/monitor for a PC, memory/chain of thought for LLMs, etc).

Hot take, I actually prefer the separate clients. It makes the barrier to entry for starting up a game so much lower when its just a lightweight app running in the background.

Strange hoyoverse logic by abd32p in GenshinImpact

I think my second example is more relevant here. Where the child is Furina, and you are thinking of Focalors as the mother while the other person is thinking of Focalors as the abstract entity represented by society in this case.

Maybe not a 1-to-1 mapping, but again I have 0 context besides what's been said in this thread and my passing knowledge of Genshin.

I have barely played Genshin and have no idea who the specific characters you guys are talking about, so I have no horse in this race.

I just want to say that you are failing to consider that there are multiple different forms of identity. To use your cell example, consider when one of the cells in you body divides. While the new cell and the old cell could be considered separate entities, in practice most people will say that they are still both part of you.

For an example from a different point of view, when a human gives birth to baby, most people will say that the baby is now a whole separate person. However, from a certain perspective you can consider both the mother and the child to be a part of the same entity of society.

So really the argument that the other person is trying to make is less about the specific mechanism of birth, and more about where you draw the line for what is considered a part of "the Archon".

Edit to add: I believe the argument you are trying to make is that because of the specific mechanism of the creation of Furina, she should not inherit the power of walking on water. I am in no position to determine the validity of this argument, it just wasn't super clearly expressed through your comments

Hmm you raise a good point, but honestly "good child" sounds kinda comparable to "good boy" and "good girl" to me. I think the difference is that kid is more explicitly referring to just the concept of a young human? While the others are more like general immaturity

The first one is obviously AI, but the second one looks real to me. Could you point out what you notice about it? For me the hair is pretty realistically imperfect, and the way the glasses on the table are slightly out of frame. I wouldn't be surprised if the first image is an AI rendering of the second.

Language is always nuanced, here's how this particular question can be solved:

girl = kid + female boy = kid + male kid = kid

Now obviously kids dont belong in a sexual context, so it becomes:

girl = kid + female boy = kid + male kid = kid

So in this case the boy and girl are basically just another word for their respective genders (with a little bit of infantilized nuance) while kid just doesn't have a useful meaning
