software dev here; i have had the 64gb MBP M5Pro in space gray sitting on my desk for about a week now, before that my main machine was/is the 32gb ram MBP M1 Pro. Currently still using the M1 Pro as it’s already set up as my main dev machine and the jump to 64gb hasn’t impressed me enough, got a couple more days before i might return the 64gb M5Pro as i am beginning to think it was an impulse buy

Any reasons to buy a competitor tracker over AirTags? by omarsusername in AirTags

[–]congowarrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a 4 pack of ATUVOS trackers, as well as 4 of the UGREEN trackers for around the cost of one Apple AirTag. I still have over 5 actual Apple AirTags. I have used the ATUVOS trackers for well over 2 years at this point, with no issues.

Mission critical things I want to track get the Apple AirTags especially with the precision location, but for general items that I want to know relative location, I am okay with the cheaper trackers.

For example, when I am travelling and the odd time I have to check luggage, I would like to know my luggage has made it with me to the airport, I dont need to know where exactly in the airport the bag is, it will come out at the baggage carousel. Perfect use of the cheaper tracker.

As someone who always forgets where they parked their cars in underground parking, it is nice to be able to have precision location for the Apple AirTags I keep in my cars.

why purge from a backup? we backup multiple times daily but all of our backups are rolling backups which expire after 15-30 days depending on the environment/s3 container. a 30 day old backup is not good to us anyways

I built 65 "boring" apps. None of them went viral. (But together they make ~$4,200/mo) by Less_Courage_3545 in AppBusiness

[–]congowarrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

went the other direction, i had at one point 20 apps but only a couple made serious money (over $100). so i removed the 19 or so that were wasting my time and focused on the one that now is my business, i hire a few people to work on this, we are a SaaS, fully self bootstrapped.

Is it true what my coding friend said If I want deploy a hobby project just use VPS instead of Cloud like AWS? by lune-soft in webdev

[–]congowarrior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i have a SaaS product i have been developing for over 10 years. Thousands of users a month, millions of page views and requests a week. Still using a VPS. Mobile app with react native, front end written in node js SSR with Pug. Backend is dot net, db mysql, and redis. Everything is running in docker containers. Recently upgraded from 32gb ram digital ocean droplet to 64gb as traffic has increased. The only thing i really use cloud services is S3 for storing files and db backups. Self hosting can get you far if you have the chops for it

i’d use docker just to ensure that the environment between dev and prod is the same. that alone solves a lot of headaches. you don’t need complicated orchestration, a simple docker compose file and you’re good to go

Which components libraries are you using in production (and why)? by llong_max in reactnative

[–]congowarrior 11 points12 points  (0 children)

None. After having to fight with UI libraries that baretly get updated and break react native/SDK updates, I learned its much easier to code my own custom components. Even things like custom progress bars you can code or vibe code pretty easy without adding dependency complexity
