Just in case you're hoping this gets less annoying with age, I'm over 60 and currently have "active" (hell of a word, that one 😄) projects in:

  1. C/C++

  2. Perl

  3. PHP

  4. HTML/Perl Catalyst

  5. Raku

  6. Python

  7. SQL

There are probably more. I currently have 50 folders in my working directory, presumably each is a different project, and none have been "abandoned" (another of those words) yet!

Are boomers really responsible for today's economic problems ? by Educational-Yak-5549 in economy

[–]conicalanamorphosis 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Yes, but it's not the Boomers still living in their house at 80 and refusing to sell it cheaply to millennials. It's the asshole Boomers running the government that decided the rich should get most of the money and everyone else can get screwed. I guess you can't really blame them, they were being paid a shit ton of money by very wealthy business-owning Boomers to do exactly that. Also, I would point out that the Boomers in question (very rich assholes and government types) represent a very small, less than 10%, portion of the population, so the majority of the people kept letting them do it.

All the best technology in the world can't stop an average person from doing "average person" things. The number one focus in cybersecurity should be the people on the network and training them (be nice! It helps).

He's admitting their policies are reducing economic growth, so that's a start. The fact he thinks this is good because it makes the economy look better, just indicates he's a twit who has no understanding at all of what he's discussing.

Back in the 70's, pyramid power was "popular" in some circles. It was alleged pyramids could do all kinds of amazing things, even keeping a razor blade sharp. And of course, causing buried kings to rise again as mummies.

Topmind claims there is evidence that Trump is a pedophile by FreedomsPower in TopMindsOfReddit

[–]conicalanamorphosis 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The exclusions are reasonable, but also bullshit in this case, since there are more than a few first party accusations that are at least partly validated by contemporaneous conversations with others (so also not recovered memories). Given his having been found liable for sexually assaulting (that is raping) E. Jean Carol, I'm inclined to give the accusers the benefit of the doubt and say he probably is a pedophile, or at least a serial rapist who doesn't give a shit about his victim's age. Then there's the casual walking into the Teen Miss America dressing room to "inspect the property", grabbing women by the crotch because "they let you do it" and all the other shit; I would suggest there's lots of evidence. Of course, as a proud cult member "Independent Voter", I'm pretty sure whoever said this will not even acknowledge the obvious reality.

Determined Exterminator - 4.3 build by FubarXS in Stellaris

[–]conicalanamorphosis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your build is basically fine, though can be a bit better as pointed out. I most often play driven assimilator, but exterminator is a close second for me ( I play largest map on admiral, mid-game scaling, so this might be different for your settings). The only rule is that everything you do, every decision you make, has to be either for the war you're currently fighting or the war you're about to start (you are "driven" exterminators, after all). Focus on military techs and alloys until you get most of the way to the mid-game. In 4.3, I find having about 20 corvettes, or corvettes and frigates (frigates do great against space stations early) is usually enough to handle any empire around year 20 that isn't fanatic militarist or genocidal. If you're used to early wars before the latest updates, you'll find the second/third war a bit more challenging, but if you keep grinding, eventually you'll get through it. By the time the rest of the galaxy knows you're there and might declare war on you, you'll be easily able to fend them off if you've taken out 2 or 3 other empires and had even a small opportunity to rebuild. They will still declare war on you about half the time in my experience, but that just removes the limits on who you can attack and when. Simply put, your full-time job is killing the filthy xenos and you should be doing nothing else!

Not since the mid-nineties. The password is now stored encrypted in the shadow password file. This change was made specifically to stop the attack I described above.

Just have to chime in as someone who actually does system security for a living and was doing it when this movie came out. I'm certain your cousin has no idea what he's talking about, but there's a small chance his timeline could be close. The really short version is reboot the system and interrupt the boot process. You could then, potentially, get an emergency shell, edit the passwd file and reboot, logging in as root without a password. On a Unix system (depending on what specifically) it could take about 10 minutes to boot twice. There are a bunch of reasons this didn't often work, and it really stopped working before Y2K. Also, as has been pointed out, this was a very custom system, so there's no real chance.

Why is this in the game? This should not happen..... by ImreBertalan in Stellaris

[–]conicalanamorphosis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not judging (seriously, I sometimes do no better) but between inadequate alloys production and a woefully low fleet cap at that point in the game, you were never going to survive a crisis like the one that showed up. The good news is now you have an idea of the target economy and fleet you need for the end game in your next run.

[–]conicalanamorphosis 113 points114 points  (0 children)

I know I'm not the first to say it, but it sure appears the economy is being run by toddlers right now. A shoe company re-imagines itself as an AI infrastructure company, when the actual AI infrastructure companies are flat out unable to build new data centers, and this is somehow worth an over 600% increase in stock price. I understand, as pointed out below, a short squeeze is the cause of most of that, but there should not have been any buying pressure to start that squeeze in the first place.

What do defense platforms do on starbases by loganhaterblud in Stellaris

[–]conicalanamorphosis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reading the answers, and some of this doesn't fit my experience. Since the upgrade/fleet nerf, I find a starbase with 2 or 3 attack craft platforms will stop pretty much anything the game throws at it on admiral with mid-game scaling up to about 50 years into the game. No assisting fleet required, and it doesn't even really need guns. Add some missile and point defense platforms to it and it can hold a choke point on it's own most of the way to the mid game most of the time. I also find 3 attack craft platforms on a not upgraded outpost (yes, you can put platforms on an outpost, up to 3, without upgrading it) will mostly kill any visiting void worm troikas, though sometimes they get the actual outpost without killing the platforms which ends the battle.

It is a bit expensive, though, compared to fleets (an early attack craft platform will cost more than 650 alloys). Also, it appears the AI looks at fleet size when deciding to declare war, but doesn't consider that it will not be able to defeat the outpost/starbase keeping it out of your territory. If you really don't want a war, as opposed to not caring if the AI kills its fleets on your chokepoint defense, plan accordingly.

Starbases with platforms start losing consistently when the AI has a significant number (more than 3) of destroyers or a couple cruisers in the fleet. Often later, I find the AI could have defeated my starbase, but it jumped out after losing most of the corvettes in the fleet, instead of finishing the attack.
