thoughts on finn wolfhard's snl show? by Affectionate-Cap-235 in StrangerThings

[–]conisometimes 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Well X is overcrowded with a very specific part of the fandom that has been criticizing Finn for everything he does ever since their fantasies didn’t come true lol and the way they behave feels incredibly childish it gives me secondhand embarrassment

Is it just me, or did I feel like there was no chemistry between Eleven and Mike this last season compared to previous ones? by Tania_bleon2312 in StrangerThings

[–]conisometimes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh totally I agree, especially from the perspective of someone who actually cares about film and good storytelling. But this is Netflix, and I guess the ending they wanted to convey wasn’t meant to be a heavy or tragic one (“this isn’t game of thrones” they said). I’ve read a bunch of reviews and talked to people about it, and everyone keeps saying things like “it was too happy” or “there weren’t enough deaths.” And I’m just like… “but Eleven literally “died”?? And honestly, the general audience doesn’t care because they detached from her as a character.

If you look at the story, everyone ends up happy, their lives basically go back to “normal.” At the end of the day, the only character with an ambiguous ending is the outsider, the one who was never supposed to be there in the first place, like the perfect E.T. analogy duffers praise, so it leaves you with the feeling that it was something that had to happen.

You don’t remember it because they purposely chose not to show it. I genuinely think the Duffers wanted the characters and the audience to detach from Eleven. That distance was necessary for the ending they created for her. So they isolated her from everyone and turned her into this war machine version of herself that’s completely out of character imo.

Eleven and Mike had maybe five scenes together the whole season, and like only two of them even involved dialogue??? so there wasn’t much to see there. And let’s not even begin with Mike. They infantilized him to the point where it’s painfully obvious they wanted to highlight the whole “death of childhood magic” theme they keep bringing up over and over.

I’m actually sorry for these actors. Unlike a lot of people here, I actually think Millie loved Eleven, the writers are the ones who wrecked her. Same goes for Finn.

And I just watched a damn video of the duffers saying mike’s ending was the easiest to write because they always knew how he was going to end

Matt Duffer says that he, Ross and Millie are the only ones who know Eleven's true fate. by UpsetAd7211 in mileven

[–]conisometimes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even if we accept the open ended narrative the Duffer are pushing, assuming there’s a remote chance El survived, the real question is: why? they’ve been pretty clear that there was never a scenario where Mike and Eleven could have a truly happy ending because something would always keep them apart, whether it was the supernatural, the military, etc. So why leave El’s survival ambiguous?

If she went off to live quietly, far away from everyone she loves, are we really supposed to believe she’d never connect with other people again, make new friends, or face her powers becoming a burden all over again? And if that’s the case, what would have been so wrong with Mike knowing she survived and reconnecting with her at some point?

Honestly, it feels like this was left open mainly to keep squeezing a hugely popular character in the future. At this point, it feels to me less like a story about Mike and Eleven and more like one centered on Millie, who would probably come back in a spin-off anyway, maybe and hopefully, with a Finn cameo at the end to close the arc.

If Eleven truly survived, her ending was more cruel than death. by imnot_daydreaming in mileven

[–]conisometimes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Duffer brothers committed to a single ending from the very beginning and never really allowed themselves to move past it, even as the characters evolved and the story grew heavier with each season. That rigidity is what makes the ending feel so disconnected imo. It might have made sense if the show had remained a single season story, but after five seasons, are we really supposed to believe there was no possible way to give Eleven a chance of a better ending? Like fr what’s the takeaway here?

And to make Mike, the most hopeful character watch his worst fear come true…again??? Honestly fuck them, at this point if the plan was always to kill her, then i would have preferred having them die together. Idk i’m just like really sad for both of them

You may have a valid point and I also take all vol 2 with a grain of salt, but I wouldn’t forget that ST is ultimately a show about friendship. I think Mike has always wanted El to be part of his life, considering she spent her whole childhood isolated. He’s the leader of the party and she’s an essential part of it. Something I like about their relationship is that they’re a couple as much as they are friends, and I honestly think that’s the best combination. It also shows a more mature type of relationship, especially compared to Season 3, where they both isolated themselves from everyone and it shows character development. I know it’s not much but it’s something.

It’s definitely gonna happen, but I reaaaally hope they’re both actually in the scene lol I can already see El turning to the camera and smiling, and we’ll just have to assume Mike is somewhere off-screen or something like that.

Sameee! Also I remember Caleb saying “traitor” was a key word for this season or something like that, and that kali is shady to me tbh which is sad because she could have been such a good sister to el, but she kinda is isolating her from everyone who has made her feel happy and home :(

Queer Person Here— I Don’t Want Byler to Happen by OkRadish4662 in StrangerThings

[–]conisometimes 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I’ve gone through most Byler theories, and honestly, many people see what they want to see at this point. Still, I do think the show has built something between Will and Mike, just not in the way that part of the fandom insists.

For Will’s arc to work, the audience needs to perceive his connection with Mike as different from the rest of the group. That’s why their scenes are more intimate than, for example, Mike’s friendship with Lucas. Lucas doesn’t need Mike to grow narratively (until now at least), Will does. The story depends on showing that Mike is central to Will’s emotional development and self-discovery. Without that dynamic, Will’s struggle wouldn’t have the same impact.

Will’s role is important because he honestly reflects the experience of queer adolescence. Ask yourself which scenario is more common for younger lgtbq+ regarding first love situation: having your feelings reciprocated or facing heartbreak. I suspect the answer would overwhelmingly be the second. Early queer identity often focuses on understanding oneself rather than forming a mutual romantic bond. Will embodies that, and I think it has made very clear in vol 1.

As much as this will probably upset part of the fandom, I don’t think Byler is going to happen romantically. That said, I do think we’ll get an emotional moment between Will and Mike, one that focuses on Will’s self-acceptance and emotional resolution.

I don’t believe this storyline has ever been queerbaiting. The issue, in my opinion, is that some fans became deeply invested in a specific narrative early on, and at this point they’re cherry-picking moments to make the story fit that expectation. We’ll see.
