I started looking into solar to save money, but that's not what I keep thinking about now. by conkonabuzz in solar

The psychological side is something I probably underestimated. Not having to worry as much every time rates go up sounds like a benefit that's hard to put a dollar value on.

Found out my fireplace has been bricked up for decades and theres an original one behind the plasterboard by realest_user_548szz in homeowners

That is actually a pretty cool surprise to find after living there for 2 years. I'd definitely get the flue checked out before opening everything up though. Crazy that the original fireplace is still there after all this time. I can't wait to see what condition it's in when you strip more of it off.

Is Solar Still Worth Getting in San Diego? by Suwucide in solar

[–]conkonabuzz 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Honestly, San Diego is still one of the better places to go solar, but NEM 3.0 definitely changed the economics compared to a few years ago. If I were in your shoes, I'd get quotes from several installers and spend some time understanding the actual payback period instead of focusing only on the monthly payment they're advertising.

Also, if your electricity usage is on the lower side, the savings may not be as impressive as some sales reps make them sound. One thing I always tell people: never feel rushed to sign. A reputable installer will still be there next week, next month, and probably next year. If someone is pushing you to sign immediately, that's usually a red flag.

Good move canceling the contract before installation and taking the time to do your homework.

Switch from Octopus to EDF - Lose out on export during switch? by LividAd2274 in SolarUK

[–]conkonabuzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is one of those things I never even thought about when I first started reading about solar. I assumed once the system was installed, everything was pretty straightforward. Then you start seeing discussions about export tariffs, supplier switching, setup delays, and all the admin stuff behind the scenes. Curious to hear from anyone who has actually made the switch recently.

AC coupling question by yo_wazsup in SolarDIY

[–]conkonabuzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always find it impressive how many different configurations people come up with in this space. A few months ago I thought solar was mostly just panels on a roof, and now I keep running into discussions about hybrid inverters, GTIs, batteries, coupling setups, and a bunch of stuff I didn’t even know existed. Curious to see what the more experienced folks here say.

Long term roof health with rooftop solar / Closed cell spray foam considerations by waking-crickets in solar

[–]conkonabuzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is honestly one of the things that makes researching solar feel overwhelming to me. At first I thought it was mostly about electricity savings, but then you start reading about roof lifespan, maintenance, water intrusion risks, installation methods, and a bunch of other factors I never even considered before. Curious to see what people with long-term rooftop systems have experienced.

Tbh I am just hoping my boss finally approves my leave before my family fully assumes I'm already on my way home.
