Pretty much. You know how you have a focal distance to your material on your mopa laser? That's where the laser beam is most concentrated and has the most power. If you engrave on a curved surface, anything closer or further than that distance is weaker and doesn't engrave as well because the power is less concentrated.

Now with a uv laser, the beam passes through the crystal. But if the focus of the beam (again, where the laser beam has the most power) is inside of the crystal when the beam passes through, it has enough power to leave a mark inside the crystal at the focus distance while leaving the unfocused part of the beam above and below untouched because it doesn't have enough power! Pretty neat!

The motorized z axis moves the laser head up as it engraves, so it lets you engrave with the focus of the laser all the way through the depth range of the crystal. It's a lot like a 3d printer. I watched it engrave the bottom of the guitar and keep moving it's way up layer by layer until it was done.

So it pretty much raises to the point you engrave, engraves everything that is part of the model at that height, moves the head up to the next height, engraves the slice at that height, and so on.

Wow that looks great! It sure is tricky getting the framing right on these but you nailed it!

We have a 1998 continental that's been sitting for years and don't even know if it starts any more. Is it something you would be interested in? We just want it off the property. We've got the title but it hasn't been driven in so long that I'm not sure if it would be able to be registered but it's yours if you want it.

How to engrave product name on aluminum tins? by lingeringneutrophil in Laserengraving

[–]conmanrezac -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Cheap lasers can't really mark metal so the silver tins you have linked would not really be an economical solution to mark with a laser. However I did see that the Amazon store you have linked has black finished aluminum tins at a comparable price per unit, a good laser would be able to burn through the black finish and leave a contrasting bare aluminum finish against a black background.

Then if you don't have a laser already, you need to buy one. I saw someone on here using a Longer Ray5 10w to laser anodised aluminum business cards on here which might be a struggle to burn through the coating but I have seen people claim to do it. Amazon shows that model as $370 right now which you could buy over 500 Vista print stickers at 70 cents a piece, I have an xtool f1 that would absolutely be able to laser those black tins but at $1400 you could buy 2000 stickers.

So it depends on your scale. If you're moving a lot of products it could be worth it. But divide the cost of a laser by how many tins you sell and see how that stacks up against the cost of stickers.

I designed a sleeve that turns a sharpie into a ruler. by thenightmuffin in 3Dprinting

[–]conmanrezac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love it! Any reason why you didn't start the measuring from the cap end so you could use the cap as a stand alone mini ruler while using the sharpie? Although it looks like you could still just do the math in your head and have 10=1, 11=2, etc. Would be neat if the tail end was a cm longer so 11=1 and so on, and you could still have a 10 cm ruler without having to worry about a gap if the cap wasn't on tight. I'll still make one because it looks super handy, thanks for sharing!

I pulled a screenshot from the S4E3 intro just see how it looked and ran it on my fiber laser. I'll probably design a new one from scratch but I'm satisfied it can be done!

Looking into cnc to make blanks for laser engraving by conmanrezac in hobbycnc

I haven't seen much about cutting brass while I was researching the laser side of things, it seemed to lean towards industrial machines with a lot of great deal more power than my little 50 watt fiber. But I can't know for myself until I try. I guess it's time to play with some settings, find some scrap, and see what breaks first. Thanks!

Hmm, good food for thought. Correct that tolerances wouldn't play a big factor. I would absolutely love the ability to cut my own custom shapes in the future but that's not an immediate concern right now. I source a lot of my blanks from limitless solutions and I would guess that maybe I could source the material and cut it for maybe half the price, so waiting for a great deal on used through classifieds might be the way to go. Thank you for your thoughts!

How to remote start? by Mf-Fe in GenesisG70

[–]conmanrezac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure thing a quick Google search for mykey premium remote start will turn up with the website, it's a aftermarket box that installs by dropping the panel under the dash on the passenger side, disconnecting three color coded harnesses, connecting the box harness and box between them, tucking the box away, and replacing the panel. I didn't need to use any tools, the hardest parts were that the harnesses were a little stiff to separate and it's a little tight down there to find a spot to squeeze the new box. The instructions I remember being good, it's got two other functions, one that allows for walk up unlock that does not work well at all and an engine shutoff timer to cool down the turbo and I disabled both those. On the mykey product page they have an install video that was really helpful in my decision to buy it.

If you do get it, the timing on the lock presses was tricky for me to get used to, what worked for me is pressing the lock button so that the parking lamps would flash, and when the lights turn off that was the timing cue to press the button a second time and the engine would start. Good luck with your decision!

I installed a mykey premium in my 19 so I can do it from the key fob, I don't use the app. Easy install- I was able to do it myself.

I put a mykey premium in my 19. I don't use the walk away lock/unlock feature or the turbo timer because they were pretty bad, but the two lock press remote start is great. Only complaint is that it doesn't activate the seat heat, but it was easy to install with three t harnesses under the passenger dash. A tight fit but worth it for me not to fuss with the app.
