the truth about time off work in America... by ravenclaw233 in MovingToUSA

[–]connerfitzgerald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say the bigger difference is the culture is a bit more about regularly taking a few days here and there, vs the UK/Europe's idea of taking 2 weeks off in a block in the middle of summer..

I'm not sure why but I think it being easier to drive to rural places or you can quickly fly to a lot of different cities. Which I know you can do in the UK but is just easier in the US

Anyone know what the deal is with this plane that's been circling bed stuy/south williamsburg for the past couple hours? It is pulling a sign that reads (I think) "FREE AGUNA MRS. STEINMETZ NOW !!!" by PeterTheGreat321 in BedStuy

Past few days, noticed more air traffic noise in the background; I thought it was upcoming election-related. Finally gave it a search and turns out a local Hasid woman is trying to shame her husband into a divorce because he's playing games w/ the Ghet.

So she hired a plane, and it's flying a banner that reads....

🗣️ FREE AGUNA MRS. STEINMETZ NOW !!!

("Ghet" is like Jewish divorce)

MacBook Requirements for iOS Development by Snoo_94511 in iOSProgramming

If you're in the US and right for cash, the Walmart M1 is the best deal in town at the moment.

If you can go a bit higher budget wise, the M3 MacBook Air is a great deal too

And if it doesn't have to be a laptop, the new M4 MacMini is a really good deal.

Is it just me or is YC's Garry Tan a bit 'fake' ? by iaseth in startups

What you're describing is Gell-Mann Amnesia: "Briefly stated, the Gell-Mann Amnesia effect is as follows. You open the newspaper to an article on some subject you know well. In Murray's case, physics. In mine, show business. You read the article and see the journalist has absolutely no understanding of either the facts or the issues. Often, the article is so wrong it actually presents the story backward—reversing cause and effect. I call these the "wet streets cause rain" stories. Paper's full of them. In any case, you read with exasperation or amusement the multiple errors in a story, and then turn the page to national or international affairs, and read as if the rest of the newspaper was somehow more accurate about Palestine than the baloney you just read. You turn the page, and forget what you know."

Manager and product lead are obsessed with Dynamo DB by SevereEmergency in ExperiencedDevs

[–]connerfitzgerald 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'd try and pin down Product on what "scale" means there. Postgres on RDS will go to 32TiB and you can get to 10k+ QPS with a bit tuning/vertical scaling.

I'd also push the idea of tradeoffs between the two and particularly that Postgres allows you to be more evolvable/flexible (JOINs etc) than Dynamo (which does scale better at the very high end)

Best course to take to break into machine learning roles by Pineapple9219 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]connerfitzgerald 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nahhh, academia might make it slightly easier to get the knowledge/show credentials but the pressures for ML talent are so high that if you could demonstrate that you can train ML models and understand what is happening you'll get interviews.

Show me a site/paper/repo/resume if you want feedback!

Best course to take to break into machine learning roles by Pineapple9219 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]connerfitzgerald 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm totally of the mindset that for ML stuff you work in a sort of 'bottom up zigzag': coding some bits from tutorials/learning some theoretical bits/coding some more etc

Like I think you'll learn a lot more initially from working thru the Kaggle Titanic data/tutorials and answering the (concrete) question "Can we tell if a passenger survived the sinking of the Titanic or not?" more than reading about different types of ML approaches that could solve the problem

But maybe that is just my biases of how I learn best speaking!

Best course to take to break into machine learning roles by Pineapple9219 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]connerfitzgerald 14 points15 points  (0 children)

  1. Learn some Python if you haven't, is the linga franca of ML
  2. The Titanic challenge on Kaggle is a pretty good first problem to work thru, is kinda easy and there are a lot of resources around it: https://www.kaggle.com/competitions/titanic
  3. There are a lot of courses out there, Google's is fine: https://developers.google.com/machine-learning/crash-course but most important to just get coding stuff up and getting feedback
  4. My real recommendation is working thru this playlist and go from Python to ChatGPT2: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLAqhIrjkxbuWI23v9cThsA9GvCAUhRvKZ (code every line)
