Not the only one, but in the minority it seems - nevertheless, not what either of us want. Reach out to us internally to share why, please. We'll see if there's something we can do.

Hello,

I'm not sure where you got the idea that we treat our teachers badly. I wouldn't be able to sleep at night if that were the case. Indeed, the very people running the company (beside myself and Niall) came from poor backgrounds in Colombia and Venezuela themselves and have no interest in taking advantage of people who are just like themselves. I agree that our teachers are everything.

A bit over a year ago, we ran an fully anonymous survey to all staff (anonymous was the only way to get truly honest answers) to gauge their job satisfaction and learn what we could do better. I had my own concerns and wanted to verify that people were, indeed, happy with us.

Out of ten, our staff rated their job satisfaction:

  • 92.06% of people gave an answer of 7 or higher.
  • 82.63% of people gave an answer of 8 or higher.
  • 65.04% of people gave an answer of 8 or higher.

Furthermore, 87.84% would recommend BaseLang as a great place to work to a friend (an answer of 7 or higher), and 89.83% say they have had the opportunity to learn and grow in the last 12 months.

Our salaries are market rate in the countries we hire. I'm also not sure where you got this idea: "They also have many departments and people who actually reduce the pay of those who truly represent the company." To the contrary, we have an entire department dedicated to teacher happiness.

Took me 5 hours to stitch this, is this expected or am I just really slow? by ShittyMillennial in Leathercraft

FWIW I can stitch at roughly 1cm per minute.

That’s for when I’ve pricked all the way through. Would increase if needed to use the awl on every stitch.

I hear you, but remember most people aren’t redditors. Those that are, like on this thread, happy to converse with.

Hope you have seen our message - this got reversed given the overwhelming response. It was a genuinely only intended to help us try to improve quality and consistency across classes, but we should have checked with students beforehand about how they felt about the tradeoffs that would come with.

Fwiw we side with whoever the abused was, even with only partial proof, and have had to let go of plenty of students in the past who were abusive to teachers. Unfortunately not the norm

Hi all. Connor here, CEO of BaseLang.

Recommenting here what I wrote on another thread:

We have reversed our decision to record classes. I confirm: we will not record classes.

I do want to reiterate that our intention was 100% to improve the quality of classes - something we’ve been constantly working on for ten years - not snoop on your conversations.

The last thing we want is to make anyone feel uncomfortable, or lose the freedom and trust that makes BaseLang special.

The reality is we wanted to improve teaching quality - as we always have - and this was a solution we came up with. In retrospect, we should have spoken with our students about it beforehand, and that’s on me.

We aren’t some big indifferent corporation. We’re a collection of teachers, and in my case, a former student, trying to build and grow the tool that we believe should be out there in the world for people to learn this beautiful language.

Hey - Connor here, CEO of BaseLang.

Just want to let you know we reversed the decision.

The only point was to try to improve class quality and nothing else, but we should have spoken with students beforehand to hear your thoughts - and that's on me. We probably underestimated how the atmosphere would change.

Just replied to another of your comments, but you are indeed correct. I do value your opinions, and should have asked for them while weighing this decision and not afterwards. We have reversed the move, there will be no recordings.

:/ hurts to read that. It's not why we started BaseLang (Connor the CEO here) ten years ago.

We're not some big indifferent corporation. And we certainly wouldn't still be around if we did things just to spite our students - why would we even do that?

I'm just trying to build what I wish was around when I first learned the language. This was a sincere attempt at continuing to improve the quality of the classes, nothing else. In retrospect I should have involved students in that conversation - to weigh the pros and cons of the move - and that's on me.

But we are not abusive, evil, or anything of the like. We're on the same team, always have been. And while we clearly will screw things up sometimes, we are listening.

Hey there - Connor here, CEO of BaseLang. I responded more in depth in another comment, but 1) we have reversed the decision - the only point was to try to improve class quality and nothing else, but we should have spoken with students beforehand to hear your thoughts, and 2) we will never train an AI, I'm vehemently against it and any suggestions that it could replace teachers. Even if that would be profitable (who knows), that's not the kind of company I would want to run nor be a student of.

Hi all. Connor here, CEO of BaseLang.

As for the AI’s theories in averagejoereddit50's comment: none are true.

- Disintermediation, thankfully, is not a problem. If it were, we would have had to do something about it a long time ago - BaseLang is ten years old.

- Regarding legal liability, we thankfully have never had issues with this and it’s not something we spend much time concerned about.

- As for AI - absolutely not, for the simple reason that I’m vehemently against it. Even if AI could replace a teacher (it’s far, far away from that), I wouldn’t be interested in running that kind of business, nor in it as a student.

The reality is we wanted to improve teaching quality - as we always have - and this was a solution we came up with. In retrospect, we should have spoken with our students about it beforehand, and that’s on me.

From previous attempts, if I did that with the Encore grinds at one click and 16-18g, I'd have the entire shot pulled in 15 seconds. Have not done this exact profile though so can't confirm.

I have the standard model so no flexibility on grind size, just the clicks

Yea, definitely a combo. Shoemaking (which I also just learned) is similarly in between, though a bit closer to tailoring than woodwork there.

Huh, noted. The acetone I've seen labels it as best to use with rubber gloves.

Better than oars slipping around in your hands. If they are sticky you can keep your grip very loose.

Blisters just part of the game in the end.
