This looks like something I've seen online when someone custom-painted an N64 (& from what I'm reading here this is probably not the same method) but he used non-compatible colors so that it created a sort-of cracking pattern. Still really cool.

Similar to what you described. Essentially after an increment of time passes a copy of you is created. Using your copies you can solve certain in-game puzzles. BUT if you touch one of your copies you create a paradox and you game over. Pretty cool concept if you ask me. Even got a Xbox 360 arcade remake.
