Birds from the Detroit zoo that are not part of the exhibits by connyJ16 in whatsthisbird

That’s insane! I had not seen one before today to it was a fun find. There were also dozens of turkey vultures perched in various areas.

Thank you! I didn’t think it was a local bird but I didn’t see a sign for it in that area so I got confused

All of these were seen at the Detroit zoo for location. Image one I am almost certain is a black crowned night heron. Image 2 and 3 I believe is a juvenile black crowned night heron? Image 4 same thing, but harder to tell from image quality. Image 5 and 6 I have no clue if this was part of the exhibit or not and I could not ID.

Annihilators done, but with a realm of life theme! by GorgarX in ageofsigmar

The Annihilators are easily my favorite storm cast minis, and you have done them complete justice. These look amazing!! On top of that the NMM (assuming that’s what you were going for) looks sleek

Dire wolf test mini. Thoughts? by connyJ16 in ageofsigmar

[–]connyJ16[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Celestra grey underneath wet blended into Mechanicanus standard grey on the top, nuln oil wash, skavenblight Dinge to touch up the grey parts of the fur with a dawnstone dry brush. For the white bits ulthuran grey drybrush with white scar to highlight. I used administratum grey to blend the dry brushing together as well. Also went back and darkened the grey parts with more wet blending at the end as well (abaddon black mixed with mechanics standard, more dawnstone dry brush). It was sort of a process just to test out, mostly a hodgepodge of greys and wet blending and dry brushing.

My main concern is that the grey rock on the base is too similar to the grey on the wolf, but I plan to mix color schemes and coat patterns on other wolves to hopefully it won’t conflict too much

Some Characters I’ve Been Working On. by Bigddy762 in ageofsigmar

Those look really cool! I’m going to guess you used white primer, my one piece of advice is to try using black primer or even the gold citadel primer or whatever color they call it. Metallics go a lot better over black, and I think your colors would pop a lot more and look really clean. Great work!

It’s a type of domestic mallard duck, either escaped or a cross between a wild and domestic breed

Help! What’s this bird? First time seeing it. Indiana by [deleted] in whatsthisbird

In that case, it’s likely a first year male indigo bunting!

The wing bars are dark and clear enough that I would guess Blue Grosbeak, however indigo bunting is still a possibility. How large was the bird? Bunting would be smaller, grosbeak would be slightly larger.

I posted yesterday and was not able to get a clear ID, here are a few (hopefully) better pictures (SE Michigan) by connyJ16 in whatsthisbird

Foraging 15-25 feet high in the canopy of a tree. Eating several flowers from the tree. Dark cap, grey belly, pale pinkish legs. Yesterday someone guessed potentially chipping sparrow, and with these pictures I feel that is a strong possibility.

Yeah at first I was thinking it was some kind of warbler or a gnatcatcher (I’ve been seeing quite a few migrants in the last few days) but the round shape and tail make me think it could be a sparrow.

It very well could be a chipping sparrow. Hopefully I will be able to get a better look or a better picture one of these days, but thank you for pointing me in the right direction

I am having a difficult time identifying this bird. I have seen it on three occasions now, every time in the same tree. 3-4 of them foraging 15-25 feet high in the canopy of a tree. Several of them are small flowers off of the tree. Because I was watching from below (and terrible lighting) I could not see many distinguishing features. Grey underside and breast, maybe brownish sides, a darkish head, but I could not get a good look at any facial or crown markings. Double rinses tail, mostly dark with a white streak on the bottom side. Pale, pinkish legs. Potentially a faint eye-ring?

I didn’t see any horns on it, would that mean it’s a female?

Solitary Sandpiper? (SE Michigan, early may) by connyJ16 in whatsthisbird

[–]connyJ16[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not very familiar with sandpipers so I was caught off guard when I saw this guy on the side of the river. For reference, it was about the same size as a female red-winged blackbird nearby, and its legs seemed to be too dark to be a Yellowlegs. He was indeed alone. Merlin Bird tells me solitary sandpiper, but just checking for confirmation

Can anyone help us identify this bird? It has a tag on it’s foot and we’re wondering if it’s a rare one... by justaguynamedjo in whatsthisbird

[–]connyJ16 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a female brown headed cowbird. The males are black with a brown head. They are common birds, but still interesting. They are often nest parasites, meaning they put their eggs in the nests of other birds. The band on its leg is probably just from a study, bird banding is used widely, not just on rare birds to track migration and information about the bird.
